I just can't wrap my brain around this completely and feel we as a world must come up with solutions. Can't each country pay into a green fund that would pay for the cleanup? It could be divided up by populations between the top 50 nations which have land on any ocean. We could tax each item by a millionth of a penny to the manufacturers.

Maybe the cleanup could be paid partly by students labor getting credit for their marine biology degrees and the marine industries could chip in for the vessels, and the taxes could pay for the additional overhead and redistribution of the garbage.

It really sucks that as advanced as we think society has become, we are nothing more than slothful pigs. Everyone who sees this should tell others by posting the video links. Next time down to the ocean, bring rakes and garbage bags.

Fishermen have been working around the world for thousands of years. To assume that fishermen are taking all the fish from the water is a bit immature. We must look at the methods of harvest which have changed in the past hundred years rather than the actual harvest of fish.

Read up on gill-netting, fish farming (even though its completely unsustainable) and hatcheries on watershed tributaries.

First of all the ocean is huge compared to the garbage field. Secondly, farmed fish eat shit in the wild as it is. The problem is that farms are not sustainable. Fish eating the shit of other farmed fish is one of the most economical ways to produce them so that's how we do it.

I would bet that the percentage of non-edible fish in the pacific ocean is still extremely low. I am a sports fishermen and wouldn't feel afraid eating Salmon, Halibut or other ocean dwelling game fish.

What do you know 4 shore ? I know that if you destroy one element of an eco system, you destroy everything on the long term.. and some countries life on fish. There are a lot of fisherman already out of a job because they can't catch the quantities they normaly catch...

Eliminating non-selective methods of harvest would be a major improvement in how we are impacting fish populations. Fishermen aren't necessarily the only problem that fish face. Usually smolts entering the saltwater do not have a conducive estuarine environment and end up dying before acclimating.

People have gotten used to the idea that weather patterns should stay consistent, but the reality is that climate change is inevitable.

It's sad to see that the birds have to restort to eating the plastic garbage from pure starvation, because the food supply that was once there has been displaced by this waste. It's the beginning of the end. In Yellowstone Park they began removing plants that were a food source for bears out of hibernation to accommodate tourist from encounters. The starving bears out of hibernation not finding their food source ended up attacking people that don't taste as good and are not quite as nourishing
