  • now we all know what real talent looks like

  • I think his voice gets better every year--kinda like wine

  • saw him a few weeks ago in kansas city. still sounds great. right on john

  • i guess i shoulda went to school too O_O

  • This man is unsurpassed in talent and genuine human understanding...dislikes..haa...all 8 of you please show me something that has just half the talent or even a tiny fraction of the talent that John Prine has...have seen this man over a dozen times live and he is so

very underrated...anyway thanks langsense for posting...

  • Great song! You should see the who's who listed on this album.

  • thank you.

  • @maddog311

Do you have a problem with me for some unknown reason?

  • fuck you fishfreak

  • I am 33 years old and I am from new brunswick canada and john prine is my fav love you man would give any thing to meet you sined Frederick

  • i love this man!

  • I was lucky enough to see him in concert (small venue, just right) shortly after he came out with the Missing Years album. Great, great show. Fantastic album.

  • As a lover of this genre, how did I not discover Prine sooner? Sitting in a bar, someone played "In spite of ourselves" and now I can't get enough! Just wonderful!

  • beautiful.

  • Country wisdom in lyrical, narrative form is immune from criticism. As a rule, one shouldn't refute Truth. Long live John Prine's wisdom.

  • There's some' big old goofy' post on this song!

  • I love the symbolism, of different phrases, and it does take a ' Word Smith' to do this!

  • ill be kicking some doors down.

  • I like John Prine. I'm 18 and have enjoyed his music since I was little.

  • great tune by one of the greatest songwriters

  • the worse song prefer bruised orange over this burros

  • Please Don't Bury Me next to any John Prine haters.

  • @efrokos just remember some humans ain't human ;) dupree

  • @phishphreak1475 Ok, you don't like it. I hate the bad Bush, but I know they have talent. I hate Nickleback, but they have talent. I hate Lil Wayne and, yes, even he has talent. You don't like to song, that's fine, not everyone likes everything. Move on, all your comment does is start nonsensical argumentation.

  • @phishphreak1475 and your talent is?

  • @phishphreak1475 It sure is a big, old goofy world, isn't it?

  • @phishphreak1475 It's true--he is more of a poet than a vocalist =) But why rain on the parade of all the people who like poets?

  • @phishphreak1475 I think this is brill. i love laughing at myself!! Love John Prine.. Take a chill pill!1

  • I love John Prine and I love Phish...and Phish is way more than just a jamm for stoners! all those lyrics that "dont make sense" according to most people are just as poetic....also great story tellers....love that TOM MARSHAL...as wel as I love that ol Robert Hunter........no one is ever gonna agree on music totally so just sit back n enjoy it...if you dont enjoy it...then click onto another song...just sayin.... and thats my 2 cents...not that anyone cares, im just bored

    ...lol

  • @phishphreak1475 Prine's appeal has always been a bit more literary then musical. The music part of it is never going to be complex or sophisticated, but the lyrics are. Prine has an amazing talent for expressing an idea or emotion in a way no one else would ever have thought of. If you even halfway listen to this song and think he is just "telling a story" you are darn near illiterate. I went to college as a deadhead in New Hampshire when Phish was just starting. Never liked them.

  • @phishphreak1475 listen to Angel From Montgomery with Bonnie Raitt. Prine is an aquired taste. Don't let some crappy relationship ruin any music for you let alone someone with the writing ability of John Prine.

  • Too true.It is indeed a big ol goofy world.

  • for anyone who think you must be old to like this, i'm 16, still love john prine's songs, listen to the song and tell me it's garbage, imma tell you you have no taste.

  • For some reason this is one of the only things that can make me smile after crying my eyes out

  • If you don't like this ...just move on....Hey ! I heard eminem has a new release, I'll bet you'll love it.....

  • Just discover this guy... so so so so so so so amazing....

  • @TheAlmightyLB

hahaha you got blocked asshole!!! maybe you should understand john prine before coming here dick

  • One of the best songwriters ever.

  • what a smile !

  • Gets any better lemme know! !!! I love you John!

  • Listened to- And played his music since 1970 when I first heard The Flag Decal Song.-

  • ...wish i had a woman who made my knees knock.... gotta love that

  • @dwl1959 I was thinking about knockin boots , but i got to find a woman! ;) dupree

  • happiness

  • New country music SUCKS. Long live John Prine and the like...

  • how can people hate during "a big ol goofy world?" I mean SERIOUSLY. if this song doesn't warm your heart then you hhave a heart of stone!

  • Mr. John Prine is every bit in the class of great American poets such as Kris Kristofferson, John Stewart, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, and a few others.

  • excellent indeed.

  • and with out the h im drunk

  • whith an a

  • The mans so telented.

  • YEP! STUCK IN THE PAST HERE!! If someone (the hidden poster) doesn't like that then he can have these crappy times!! Thanks for posting! YESSS. JOHN PRINE FOREVER!

  • Is that Mark OConner on fiddle?

  • Comment removed

  • theres a reason John Prine was never really "popular' I think its because he's not an act he doesn't do what he knows you'll like, He's an artist he does what he likes and hope s that it might touch you in some way, well John it has to alot of us

  • BEST MUSIC EVER.

  • One of the best kept secrets in the world, John Prine!!

  • @CactassDupree agreed. I've only just discovered him. Different class

  • @CactassDupree thats 4 darn sure its sad too u know

  • @jwmdlm07 U know it..:(

  • @CactassDupree I totally agree. I saw Prine live in Saskatoon with my dad, who introduced me to his music and has since passed away. A shared experience that will live in my memory until the day I die. Thank you John Prine!

  • Cashfan85, I guess the only songwriters I'd put in John's category are Kristofferson, Bob Dylan and John Stewart, who you may not be familiar with. Just Google:

John Stewart: Poet with a Guitar.

I think John's songs make me "feel" the best when I hear them. Would love to see him live. I missed when he was in Ann Arbor, Michigan...

  • Oh, and I feel sad for thealmightylb because he has something missin in his core! I think that a person only gets through the gates if the dogs and kids love you and you love Prine.

  • John Prine has been the sound track to my whole life and I think all six of my children would bare witness! It was playing when my babies crawled on the floor, when my dad died, when the family got together, every ride we ever took, when my children got married, and I will haunt them if it's not played at my funeral!

  • JOHN PRINE--ONE OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS IN THECOUNTRY.

  • @BrianEnright

I agree but, I was gonna say the world!! John Prine is awesome!

  • we are all watching a genius at work

  • @michaelb5e2 So very true.

  • Seven idiots walk among us.

  • People.... poeple, please stop the hate while your listening to such a laid back song like this. If you can't stop ..........GO AWAY

  • speak your mind old man who gives a flying jacks ass what people say,,,,,obvious they have no idea what life is!good song...keep on singing

  • Piccoli diamanti per le orecchie della mia gioventù

  • Lord jesus i tought i heard a moose when this video started ahahah

  • I LIKE THIS music i seen him live in winnipeg Manitoba 2010

  • @THEALMIGHTYLB:

music isn't out there to try and get played. some of the greatest music ever created never even makes it to the radio. Musicians are just authors telling stories but your not reading it, your listening to it. it's where you can let your feelings out and tell people your story . '' and not that it matters, when youtube first came around it didn't even have a LIKE feature, that's pretty recent feature added.

  • I grew old listening to this guy.Women come and go but brother John is always there.

  • Became a John Prine fan many moons ago... I was/am a fan of Steve Goodman and somehow they just go together like salt and pepper... never to be passed one without the other...

Bless you John Prine... from Dear Abby to Space Monkey...

And thank you for keeping Steve alive in my heart...

  • He is so positive! I love to listen to John Prine.

  • And wow in the video what is he playing in a garage. Such a small audience!!!

  • @TheAlmightyLB

The almighty above has been blocked.. just seems he was looking for a fight more than anything else.

  • @langsense Hey I'm wondering what the LB stands for, could it be the AlmightyLardButt?

  • @langsense theres not a whole lot of ppl know, I didn't till my husband played the tape for me in september of 1998. I think he's KOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @phishphreak1475

But that's your opinion and it's wrong. Nobody made you watch this video. If I was trying out somebody's music on here... even if I hated it, I wouldn't feel the need to go all out and express my hate about it, especially in such detail.

I've checked your one uploaded video, you've had that lobotomy I think.

  • @phishphreak1475 If you can't accept the fact that different people like different things, and simply insist on telling others how clueless and worthless they are, I vote for the lobotomy. People like different things. I like the Dead, too. But, I also like John Prine for lots of reasons.

  • @phishphreak1475

Who cares about your Phish fetish. They suck.

  • @phishphreak1475

    PS

I feel sorry for you. You still have not figured out that Phish is a terrible live band. Colorado hates Phish. It is east coast transplants like you that come here and shit in all the parking lots during the shows, and leave your damn trash everywhere. Fucking dirt head. Stay away.

  • @parpurcell Phish does not blow, to any degree. They are incredible. But so is John Prine. No need to diss his music to validate your own.

  • @OxfordTown thanx for your comment!!! believe i only posted 2 comments about this song, and have gotten over 50 people hatin' on me AND PHISH for it.... wasn't my intentions. and Colorado "hates" Phish??? REALLY!?! all 35,000 people at Dick's Sporting Goods in Commerce City, CO. over Labor Day weekend sure like they were having a blast, as well as i....!!!!

  • @phishphreak1475 "Open Minded" does not mean bashing someone else preferences dipshit! I love phish too but they are two different styles of music that appeal to different people for different reasons. He's a story teller and a damn good one. Just like Phish can sit and jam all night for a bunch of stoners. It's ALL good!

  • @langsense

    troll? Peut're etre?

  • @TheAlmightyLB well almighty one..........I am an old loser because i do enjoy this garbage. You are a hero almighty.......anyone who names themselves the almighty lb has serious issues.

  • @TheAlmightyLB No I'm a twenty four year old man.Fairly successful and just trying to make my dreams come true. This song makes me smile, what's wrong with that?

  • @TheAlmightyLB wow...spoken like a true piece of shit...way to go fella

  • @TheAlmightyLB it's kind of funny you should have listened to the song a little better I think he's talking about people like you.

  • @TheAlmightyLB Yes, because the masses have been shown to have such wonderful taste in music- Justin Bieber, Hanna Montana, Brittany Spears, the Spice Girls among countless others- I bow to your infinite wisdom and irrefutable logic.

  • @TheAlmightyLB Yes, because the masses have been shown to have such wonderful taste in music- Justin Bieber, Hanna Montana, Brittany Spears, the Spice Girls among countless others- I bow to your infinite wisdom and irrefutable logic.

  • @TheAlmightyLB i feel sorry for you.

    OMG you have no taste!!!!

  • @langsense This song is great.Thank you for the post.

  • @TheAlmightyLB John Prine is a legend... What have you done?

  • @TheAlmightyLB

Someone should find you and hurt you for such remarks

  • @TheAlmightyLB Does LB stand for loser bitch? Some people just don't have the intelligence to understand the story in a song. John Prine is one of the greatest.

I checked your profile and I see you liked "Wonder Woman Caught Pooping", "I'm gonna nom on your Face!", "Katy Perry's Cleavage Traumatizes Mother!!"

Obviously you are just a total fucking idiot and should refrain from commenting and verifying your ignorance.

  • @TheAlmightyLB that's the reason you've been watching it over and over.....

  • You renew my aquaintance with feeble humanity! Thanks!

  • This is a great song...with a sweet melody....I like it. It IS a goofy world...

  • Found John Prine a few months ago, what a great find.

  • ...&...I sure do love ya', Honey!

  • my hero and inspiration! Semper fi,

    Duncan4563 youtube chnl.

  • we used to string up sausages in the smokehouse while listenin' to my hero here

  • John Prine and his mom were sitting around coming up with all the epigrams they could think of. Prine wrote them down and eventually got to them with this song.

  • Valium in a song.

  • my dad turned me on to john prine when i was jus a lil girl n i still love him rest in peace dad

  • I meant the funny thing though!! Sorry wish he'd come to Scotland again!!!

  • It's my man who loves prine ! But I must admit I also love his stuff too the Funny thong is there's more than 20 years between him and I my partner but it a big old goofy world !!!

  • You are so right lulem. The only way to listen to prime.

  • Wonderful to listen to him tonight, great songwriter!!!!!

  • One of the great, great songwriters...

  • If you were raised in the country on horses and hard work, you will know these words

  • Absolutely beautiful. My type of music ♪♫ ♥

  • If you put a gun to my head i still would not be able to tell you my favorite John Prine song . They are all great

  • @tfe423 I'd pick something with a really long title, just in case. Muuuuuuuuuuuhlenberg Coooooooooounty, maybe?

  • @tfe423 hey, what is your favorite john prine song. Just curious?

  • @tfe423 /Yeah, but this is definitely one of my favorites. Only John Prine could write a song with lyrics made almost entirely from common catch-phrases and cliches and still make it sound like magic.

  • I don't understand what does this sentence mean..."It’s better than sitting like a bump on a log"

  • @panitaweelee

"Sitting like a bump on a log" is just a folksy way of saying. - "Doing nothing at all."

A log is inanimate and does nothing and a bump is inanimate and does nothing. So together between the bump and the log, there is nothing going on at all.

The expression is often used to describe someone who is lazy or useless, as in "He just sat there, like a bump on a log!"

  • @fourweight Thank you very much for answering me...

  • @panitaweelee don't be lazy

  • keep playing me a Prine tune!

  • I have to translate this song into Thai....

  • Nothing like music with meaning Prine is GOLD

  • Love John! His lyrics touch the heart and soul!

  • Tell it like it is .... so much real life in his words and he gets a kick out of performing this tune. I agree with the other commentator ... this guy is one of the best ever!

  • Love this song, love John Prine, keep coming back the the song....Thank you for the share...TC friend

  • Mr . Prine you are good for the soul .

  • hey all of you.... i saw him ten years ago in scotland and we would love him back here again so just love what you got

  • yes.....it certainly is :-)

  • I wouldn't listen to him as a kid in the 70s because I thought he'd be another Bob Dylan folkie type. Don't bother flaming on, if you like bob right on, most folk music not my thing,

But then around 90 or so I got turned on to John & pretty much went nuts for the guy. Then seeing him in an interview that sealed the deal. As wise, unique, non-judgmental and unpretentious as Johnny Cash and a true poet, song writer & artist. In fact one of the best songwriters for the last several decades!

  • Never knew JP was looking over my shoulder.... the whole time....must be my guardian Angle!!!!....Thanks John!!!!

  • I have never heard this song before till right now. And I never realized how great and wonderfull john was as a writer. He is certainly gifted and a deep thinker.

A shame the world doesn,t recognize him more and that includes me.He is a great writer and singer.

  • truly a wordsmith......

  • We can hardly wait, he is coming to our town this Saturday (21/8/2010). I'd hear him years ago on Austin City Limits, and we have all his CD's. Now we will se Him live.

For us He is the best""

  • I'm 58 years old and wonder why in ----did I not know about John Prine as I was coming along.I guess I must have gotten all involved with raising kids and family.I love his music and would have certainly loved Prine back in the day.I've been listening to him on You Tube ever since I first discovered him earlier this year on the Marty Stuart Show.He is one of my favorite singer/songwriters.If he ever comes close to home I'll surely go and see him.

  • I was trying to recover myself from a relationship breakdown, and went to the downtown record shop, looking for some good music, and found there the shop was playing Prine in the background. Wow, it was the sensible words he sang, about happy and heartbreak that made realize this sadness goes the world around, and John's songs that makes sense to me out of the messy things of love, gone wrong, or stood right. Thank you John Prine.

  • @rfish54 I hear you, loud & clear. He's my own little version of therapy, and a lot less expensive.

  • I love how every line has meaning and hidden meaning, you'lll never truly understand what he means or wants to say

  • Come see this fabalous artist Sept. 7. 2010 in Reading Pennsylvania

  • im thinking about it - shoot me a message and give me some details - id like to take myself and one other person - we like to drink and party - so if this isnt your thing then enjoy the show!!!!!
