very underrated...anyway thanks langsense for posting...
I was lucky enough to see him in concert (small venue, just right) shortly after he came out with the Missing Years album. Great, great show. Fantastic album.
As a lover of this genre, how did I not discover Prine sooner? Sitting in a bar, someone played "In spite of ourselves" and now I can't get enough! Just wonderful!

this shouldn't even be classified as "music". sounds more like someone that can't play an instrument, just up there "telling a story" (not singing), sounds more like an Adam Sandler comedy album. and it's not JUST this song either, it is EVERY DAMN SONG! @ timtipton: i REALLY, REALLY don't like this, but hadn't heard it since i was divorced and wasn't "forced" to listen to it anymore, thought i would give it a chance, NOPE! STILL SUX!! by the way, not big on Eminem either. John Prine=NO talent
@phishphreak1475 Ok, you don't like it. I hate the bad Bush, but I know they have talent. I hate Nickleback, but they have talent. I hate Lil Wayne and, yes, even he has talent. You don't like to song, that's fine, not everyone likes everything. Move on, all your comment does is start nonsensical argumentation.
I love John Prine and I love Phish...and Phish is way more than just a jamm for stoners! all those lyrics that "dont make sense" according to most people are just as poetic....also great story tellers....love that TOM MARSHAL...as wel as I love that ol Robert Hunter........no one is ever gonna agree on music totally so just sit back n enjoy it...if you dont enjoy it...then click onto another song...just sayin.... and thats my 2 cents...not that anyone cares, im just bored
@phishphreak1475 Prine's appeal has always been a bit more literary then musical. The music part of it is never going to be complex or sophisticated, but the lyrics are. Prine has an amazing talent for expressing an idea or emotion in a way no one else would ever have thought of. If you even halfway listen to this song and think he is just "telling a story" you are darn near illiterate. I went to college as a deadhead in New Hampshire when Phish was just starting. Never liked them.
@phishphreak1475 listen to Angel From Montgomery with Bonnie Raitt. Prine is an aquired taste. Don't let some crappy relationship ruin any music for you let alone someone with the writing ability of John Prine.
for anyone who think you must be old to like this, i'm 16, still love john prine's songs, listen to the song and tell me it's garbage, imma tell you you have no taste.
Mr. John Prine is every bit in the class of great American poets such as Kris Kristofferson, John Stewart, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, and a few others.
YEP! STUCK IN THE PAST HERE!! If someone (the hidden poster) doesn't like that then he can have these crappy times!! Thanks for posting! YESSS. JOHN PRINE FOREVER!
theres a reason John Prine was never really "popular' I think its because he's not an act he doesn't do what he knows you'll like, He's an artist he does what he likes and hope s that it might touch you in some way, well John it has to alot of us
@CactassDupree I totally agree. I saw Prine live in Saskatoon with my dad, who introduced me to his music and has since passed away. A shared experience that will live in my memory until the day I die. Thank you John Prine!
Cashfan85, I guess the only songwriters I'd put in John's category are Kristofferson, Bob Dylan and John Stewart, who you may not be familiar with. Just Google:
John Stewart: Poet with a Guitar.
I think John's songs make me "feel" the best when I hear them. Would love to see him live. I missed when he was in Ann Arbor, Michigan...
Oh, and I feel sad for thealmightylb because he has something missin in his core! I think that a person only gets through the gates if the dogs and kids love you and you love Prine.
John Prine has been the sound track to my whole life and I think all six of my children would bare witness! It was playing when my babies crawled on the floor, when my dad died, when the family got together, every ride we ever took, when my children got married, and I will haunt them if it's not played at my funeral!
music isn't out there to try and get played. some of the greatest music ever created never even makes it to the radio. Musicians are just authors telling stories but your not reading it, your listening to it. it's where you can let your feelings out and tell people your story . Became a John Prine fan many moons ago... I was/am a fan of Steve Goodman and somehow they just go together like salt and pepper... never to be passed one without the other...
Bless you John Prine... from Dear Abby to Space Monkey...
And thank you for keeping Steve alive in my heart...

@langsense John Prine really does blow though. i am very open minded when it comes to ALL genres of music. Just got back from Denver, CO's 3 night Phish run over Labor Day wknd, and that put me over 70 Live Phish shows alone. saw the Grateful Dead many times before the untimely death of Jerry Garcia. i was married for approx 10 years, my (now ex) wife listened to John Prine A LOT! so did her brother. must be a Kentuckian thing!never did "grow on me"! would rather have a root canal or lobotomy!!!
But that's your opinion and it's wrong. Nobody made you watch this video. If I was trying out somebody's music on here... even if I hated it, I wouldn't feel the need to go all out and express my hate about it, especially in such detail.
I've checked your one uploaded video, you've had that lobotomy I think.
@phishphreak1475 If you can't accept the fact that different people like different things, and simply insist on telling others how clueless and worthless they are, I vote for the lobotomy. People like different things. I like the Dead, too. But, I also like John Prine for lots of reasons.
I feel sorry for you. You still have not figured out that Phish is a terrible live band. Colorado hates Phish. It is east coast transplants like you that come here and shit in all the parking lots during the shows, and leave your damn trash everywhere. Fucking dirt head. Stay away.
@OxfordTown thanx for your comment!!! believe i only posted 2 comments about this song, and have gotten over 50 people hatin' on me AND PHISH for it.... wasn't my intentions. and Colorado "hates" Phish??? REALLY!?! all 35,000 people at Dick's Sporting Goods in Commerce City, CO. over Labor Day weekend sure like they were having a blast, as well as i....!!!!
@phishphreak1475 "Open Minded" does not mean bashing someone else preferences dipshit! I love phish too but they are two different styles of music that appeal to different people for different reasons. He's a story teller and a damn good one. Just like Phish can sit and jam all night for a bunch of stoners. It's ALL good!
@TheAlmightyLB well almighty one..........I am an old loser because i do enjoy this garbage. You are a hero almighty.......anyone who names themselves the almighty lb has serious issues.
@TheAlmightyLB No I'm a twenty four year old man.Fairly successful and just trying to make my dreams come true. This song makes me smile, what's wrong with that?
@TheAlmightyLB Yes, because the masses have been shown to have such wonderful taste in music- Justin Bieber, Hanna Montana, Brittany Spears, the Spice Girls among countless others- I bow to your infinite wisdom and irrefutable logic.
@TheAlmightyLB Yes, because the masses have been shown to have such wonderful taste in music- Justin Bieber, Hanna Montana, Brittany Spears, the Spice Girls among countless others- I bow to your infinite wisdom and irrefutable logic.
@TheAlmightyLB Does LB stand for loser bitch? Some people just don't have the intelligence to understand the story in a song. John Prine is one of the greatest.
I checked your profile and I see you liked "Wonder Woman Caught Pooping", "I'm gonna nom on your Face!", "Katy Perry's Cleavage Traumatizes Mother!!"
Obviously you are just a total fucking idiot and should refrain from commenting and verifying your ignorance.
John Prine and his mom were sitting around coming up with all the epigrams they could think of. Prine wrote them down and eventually got to them with this song.
It's my man who loves prine ! But I must admit I also love his stuff too the Funny thong is there's more than 20 years between him and I my partner but it a big old goofy world !!!
im smiling at the stars from the warmth of my campfire smokeing some of the best organic home grown medicine with a good bottle of beer in my hand with a burning joint . i raise my handfull in the air and wish you all the best where your at in life and hope to see you around the campfire soon
@tfe423 /Yeah, but this is definitely one of my favorites. Only John Prine could write a song with lyrics made almost entirely from common catch-phrases and cliches and still make it sound like magic.
"Sitting like a bump on a log" is just a folksy way of saying. - "Doing nothing at all."
A log is inanimate and does nothing and a bump is inanimate and does nothing. So together between the bump and the log, there is nothing going on at all.
The expression is often used to describe someone who is lazy or useless, as in "He just sat there, like a bump on a log!"
Tell it like it is .... so much real life in his words and he gets a kick out of performing this tune. I agree with the other commentator ... this guy is one of the best ever!
I wouldn't listen to him as a kid in the 70s because I thought he'd be another Bob Dylan folkie type. Don't bother flaming on, if you like bob right on, most folk music not my thing,
But then around 90 or so I got turned on to John & pretty much went nuts for the guy. Then seeing him in an interview that sealed the deal. As wise, unique, non-judgmental and unpretentious as Johnny Cash and a true poet, song writer & artist. In fact one of the best songwriters for the last several decades!
I have never heard this song before till right now. And I never realized how great and wonderfull john was as a writer. He is certainly gifted and a deep thinker.
A shame the world doesn,t recognize him more and that includes me.He is a great writer and singer.
We can hardly wait, he is coming to our town this Saturday (21/8/2010). I'd hear him years ago on Austin City Limits, and we have all his CD's. Now we will se Him live.
I'm 58 years old and wonder why in ----did I not know about John Prine as I was coming along.I guess I must have gotten all involved with raising kids and family.I love his music and would have certainly loved Prine back in the day.I've been listening to him on You Tube ever since I first discovered him earlier this year on the Marty Stuart Show.He is one of my favorite singer/songwriters.If he ever comes close to home I'll surely go and see him.
I was trying to recover myself from a relationship breakdown, and went to the downtown record shop, looking for some good music, and found there the shop was playing Prine in the background. Wow, it was the sensible words he sang, about happy and heartbreak that made realize this sadness goes the world around, and John's songs that makes sense to me out of the messy things of love, gone wrong, or stood right. Thank you John Prine.
im thinking about it - shoot me a message and give me some details - id like to take myself and one other person - we like to drink and party - so if this isnt your thing then enjoy the show!!!!!

John Prine and his mom were sitting around coming up with all the epigrams they could think of. Prine wrote them down and eventually got to them with this song.

@tfe423 hey, what is your favorite john prine song. Just curious?
cowboyfan1113 9 months ago
@tfe423 /Yeah, but this is definitely one of my favorites. Only John Prine could write a song with lyrics made almost entirely from common catch-phrases and cliches and still make it sound like magic.

I don't understand what does this sentence mean..."It’s better than sitting like a bump on a log"
panitaweelee 1 year ago
@panitaweelee
