The friend thing is from Toaster Share Companion mod. It let's you invite almost every non-modded NPC to follow you if they like you enough.

I like the originals much much better. I mean, WTF?? Didn't Bethesda MAKE the lore for TES? How could they make their NPCs untrue to the lore? Besides, not every character has to directly follow the 'distinct' traits that may have been described in the lore.
