Is it just me or does this sound slightly commercial? Not ripping on The Melvins, as I know their status, and just how non-commercial they are, but to me this is a tad bit commercial. Maybe I should stop listening to The Pop Group and join the rest of the indie world.
that´s 70s teen idol Leif Garret on vocals...LOL!!!! Go King Buzzo!!! What did Kurt say of these guys, "Melvins are the past, present and future of music"?
@AdhirKalyan123 "not as bad as people are making it"? Who the hell is disliking this? This is a Nirvana cover made by one of Kurt's favorite bands featuring vocals from a drugged out out former boy band member.
This song was supposed to be ironic. Leif Garrett was a drug addicted, washed up, Justin Bieber-esque pop star. As would be with Kurt Cobain. Buzzo made a joke and anyone who likes this song for it's content and not its hilarity is the subject of that joke.
@sydissydable kurt cobain will never be forgotten like leif garrett and bieber and for a scumbag you are to even say such a thing in disrespect of kurt the melvins and nirvana were very close friends so the melvins are paying tribute to their comrade cobain meant more to the masses then did bieber and garrett combined
@jacobladders I have a quote from Buzzo himself on the subject. courtesy of the San Francisco weekly: "I don't have to have permission [from Nirvana] to do a cover song," Osborne says. "I just have to pay the publishing on it. If they can't see the humor in it, I can't help them." He then goes on to remark about Courtney Love: "Hopefully she will get upset about it," Osborne smirks. "If she thinks that what we're doing is somehow cheapening the good name of Kurt Cobain, so be it."
@sydissydable I remember reading somewhere that one of the melvins said Cobain was borderline retarded....dont quote me (Ill prolly get 100 pissed comments from nirvana dick riding hipsters anyway)...people seem to confuse junkies for artists even today
well, i don´t think they wanted to piss off kurt. i think they liked the song and about leif garrett, well, maybe that wasn´t the best choice but they alway showed a lot of tolerence about different music styles. i don´t know it 100% but i think they made it because they like the song and the band nirvana. like someone else said they used to hang out together in the past days in aberdeen and in seattle
Well since people are having trouble knowing the facts behind this album, here they are: this album is INDEED from the Melvins. It was recorded along with two other albums at the same time in Mike Patton's Ipecac label though they were released within the span of a few months. They bear similar covers, all related to flowers and this release in particular had a slew of collaborations, which is why a former teen idol is singing it though the instrumentation is definitely from the Melvins.
This isnt the melvins. This is new found glory. The melvins never had a "crybaby" album in 2000. This cover is for their 1999 release "the maggot." this song isnt on that album either. Nice try to whoever mistook nfg for the melvins. You skrewed up in like 5 areas so get your facts straigjt next time you post something.
@heavymetalguy6 "Maggot" "Crybaby" and "Bootlicker" are three Melvins albums with almost identical covers. Yes, this is a Melvins album. It's part of the trio. The guy singing is some washed up child star from a long time ago, but the guitar and drums are DEFINITELY Buzz and Dale.
the Melvins covered this because "the idea of a burned-out heroin-addicted teen idol doing the biggest song by a dead burned-out heroin-addicted teen idol sounded good. I don't think most people understood the joke. I don't know why. I thought it was beyond hilarious"
Buzz Osborne explained the cover in the January 2007 issue of revolver magazine
@highonmyself Eh. I can't think of a greater song that had more meaning, a bigger impact on an entire generation, and changed the way we looked at music. Other than SLTP. Maybe I'm half asleep or having a hang over from eggnog though. lol
Cobain was a fan of the Melvins, thats no secret. He even played on shows(I have some bootleg recordings).I am listening Melvins since waaaaaaaaaaaay back. When I heard smells like teen spirit I actually thought for a second this was the Melvins. In the Bleach album and Nevermind and even more recent work you will hear the sound of the Melvins. Take Floyd the Barber : The crude drums, heavy sounding riffs is something that only can exist because of Buzz. I love both bands, but Melvins are king.
Not going to argue what band is better, but The Melvins kicked smells like teen spirit's ass, Mevins, Rage against the machine and Nirvana (yes them :l ) do amazing covers from amazing bands....
I think Kurt wanted nirvana to be more like the melvins. I mean he wanted to be well known and respected for the right reasons but he didn't want to commercialize his music. He wanted to be more underground. There were people coming to concerts that complete misunderstood the music. It depressed him. His songs sound popish but he came by it honestly. And it attracted the sheep. Oh and why wouldn't the melvins cover this? Makes sense..
/facepalm. Can you name a bigger song? That came out of nowhere, had an impact on everyone, completely flipped " Heavy metal hair bands " into a completely different style that basically marked the 90's music.
@Methstoriesis ok, I dont want to make another "youtube fight". for me, nirvana sucks balls, and for you they wrote the greatest song in history, lets just all of us leave in peace with rock
@yovioleatuzorramadre lol. how do they suck balls? you obviously don't understand music. at all. especially since you are commenting on a video by the melvins who's covering SLTP, which is a Nirvana song. if you aren't into this music, why the fuck show up here? go listen to your hair metal.
@Methstories wow I just say that I dont want to fight, how silly you are, let me tell you why, Because I love Melvins since a 1991 show (wich was amazing obviously). hair metal? mmm no I am sorry, never liked that bullshit, coming from a nirvana fan like you is very probably that you enjoy of justin bieber and jonas brothers music.
@yovioleatuzorramadre You're dumb.. If it wasn't for Nirvana you wouldn't even know The Melvins, I never seen Nirvana following The Melvins on tours, it was always Melvins touring on Nirvana's shows as Nirvana headlined. JB & JB suck. gtfo.
@Methstories I saw them in july, nevermind was out in september, I have nothing to thank to nirvana. kid just read yourself, your words are like "the more you sell and the more people follow you the better you are".
@Methstories Actually dude, the main reason I started listening to Nirvana and why I love them so much today is thanks to the Melvins and in particular King Buzzo. And the only reason I listened and now love the Melvins is thanks to Mike Patton, not that I'm talking about that, I just think it's funny how music/musicians have a butterfly effect like that.
@Nickpatient Yeah that's pretty cool. I just started actually really listening to a bunch of The Melvins stuff about a few months ago, they're pretty kick ass.
@BuzzoQueen Yeah the fact Buzz was awesome in Fantomas and also Mike Patton did an interview for the 'Angel Dust' recording sessions and when asked what bands albums he was looking forward too in 1992 he said "Uhh, Melvins are coming out with an album this year I think. I REALLY like the Melvins." So I youtubed them and I watched a video of Honeybucket and I was like "This shits awesome!" :D
@yovioleatuzorramadre yeah I agree. well....Nevermind sucked balls. It sold nearly 8 million copies, but that's not a testament to anything. That's basically 8 million people who probably have Milli Vanilli in there collection too. Bleach was a great record...as for In Utero, it had Scentless Apprentice and Milk It (the only two good songs). Not sure what the greatest song in history is. Nirvana didn't write it though...that's for sure. Maybe a Stooges or Velvet Underground song?
@Methstories I love this song and i love Nirvana too, but you should know that just because a song it's popular it doesn't mean it's good, look at all the Disney kids they are no musicians for them it's all about money and fame. It is the heart you put into music what it really matters. And by the way Nirvana it's way too much overrated you made me realize that.
I think Melvins covered this song for sarcasm and humor bcuz this song made it so big, and Kurt hated it. Another funny thing is that, that fucker Leif Garrett is singing it XDD haha Good old Melvins.
You do realize that Kurt Cobain used to basically be these guys roadie before he hit it big right? In fact Dale Grover played drums for Nirvana early on during some demos. It's well documented The Melvins were a huge influence on Kurt's music. That's why they covered it.
@kindbuds0021 kurt was like buddy he hung out partied and jammed with buzz and all the guys they introduced him to punk they were all highschool friends in the local punk scene at the time
@kindbuds0021 Well not to be a downer but im almost certain that they covered this to piss off Kurt(if he were alive) cuz they knew that Kurt got so tired of this song by late 91 also they got some shitty singer to do it instead of Buzz..Also Buzz did a little article for a metal magizine about Kurt basically saying that he was really mad at him for commiting suicide and that he wishes he could just litsen to the music and enjoy it but he cant.He misses his friend yno?
