known in south korea as K5. rented during the weekend and was a real pleasure drive. accelerates nicely. Sonata is good also, but the design in sonata is awful. One really nice thing is, i'm 170cm and slept comfortably in the back seat overnight. that was a great surprise for me.
@Thesoilemezidis Why would toyota teach kia how to build motors? R u mad? U seriously do need a special help kid. Hyundai and Kia's GDI technology is way ahead of MPI and i-vtec craps it delivers more power and is more environmentally friendly and their 6 speed automatic transmission is a perfect match with the 4cylinder GDI engine. This can be proved by how sonata and optima turbo with 274hp beats Camry and Accord V6 models and slightly behind Lexus E350 and Mecedes E300
@Ruggier00 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. buy a boring ford fusion or a sexy optima/sonata with more power and more for the money. gee i just don't know what to get. not saying the fusion isn't a good car, because it is, but the optima is nicer
@zhoheb82, you are absolutely right. the first time I glanced the car, both exterior and interior, the Audi A4 had immediately kicked in. the resemblance is very obvious!
Rented a car from Avis, got the Kia Optima, Had it for 10 days, put 2366 miles on it. Wife and I both loved it. Handled great, excellent gas mileage. Only complaints is on a very windy day on the highway it got buffeted about. Even in the mountains of New York, Vermont, NH, and Maine, no problems. Looking to purchased a "previously owned" one now.
@PigiaMimi Ok, then let's clarify. Design chief is German. Since acquiring P.S. Kia has been winning design awards. Before the paternal hand of a German was shaping these cars? Not so much. Happy now?
OPTIMA RULES! My wife and I just bought one. So glad we didn't go with the Ford Fusion. Seems like everybody within 100 KM of my house has a Ford Fusion. Talk about taking the fun out of owning a new car. The Optima is a 10 out of 10 on styling for the money....looks great, feels great to drive. You will be proud to drive this car.
this is a gorgeous car, everything you want is in there.Rides very good, wonderful all around, but they say well equiped is$ 21,000 I beg to differ! this all said and done is more like $40,000.But thats here in Canada,so I guess there quite the differance here and across the border.
@flynbest Not boss, designer. Kia stole him from Audi with a large bag of cash & complete creative freedom. You give a good designer complete creative freedom & this is the result. An absolutely gorgeous car.
i just bought this car 3 weeks ago. i was originally looking at a Sonata. Let me tell you, this car smokes the Sonata in every way. The interior is amazing. The base model standards are impressive. I get looks all day from Lexus and Beemer divers probably because they can't belive it;'s a Kia. Only drawbacks for me are the suspension and the blind spots. Suspension is up and down springy. There are blind spots I'm not used to. I give the car a 4.5 out of 5. For the price you can't beat it!
This thing always looks really boring (for the exterior) on all the online vids, it's one of the few cars that actually looks way better in person than on these clips.
I do not mind that the 2011 Optima and the 2011 Sonata are the same car. I like the look of both and would be happy with either. Have a Genesis 4.6 that I cannot say enough about. Both Kia and Hyundai have come so far and having owned Toyota's, & Honda's, Neither have cars that come to the Genesis. The Toyota Avalon makes a good attempt.
some of the car is the same as the Sonata but I can tell you as an owner the driving experience isn't. my neighbor owns a 2011 Sonata GLS. the interior is plastic feeling. the Optima is way more luxurios! Way more cabin room too! Don't believe me then test drive both cars!
hm...never thought I'd say this but the styling is quite good, I like those headlamps. Kia actually has better design than Hyundai. Badge snoobs won't like it though but the only question is, how reliable is it?
@happyboyy8k i have an avensis model 99 and it was the best designed car in his category...it was the only with 1.6 motor with 115 ps...all the car was with 100 or 98...and now it's cutier that this shit...and don't look at the outside of the car...but see at the engine..i have got 250.000 and it's not eating oil....every day i'm speeding it up and it's better than this ugly square think
this car is going to be huge its 100% bullit proof! I don't care who makes it or designed it it's gourgous and it get excellent fuel economy it can care less if it has a kia badge on. If you let that stop you from buying one your must be insacure. remember the man makes the car the car does not make the man! if you dont like the car go pay 15 to20 grand more thhats real smart. the man who dies with the most toys still dies. americans we have become to materialistic!
why is everyone saying "Yeah, the koreans are owning the japanese!." THIS is the only actually good car kia has and this company and hyundai make the ugliest and cheap rehashed garbage cars i ever seen in my life. They need to learn something from other makers not copy them. -.- Fuck KIA.
I just got into one of these at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show and it made me want to buy one over a Nissan and Honda. Kia and Hyundai are really coming out with great cars.
@cashivan No, it doesn't. The Optima was actually designed by the German designer Peter Schreyer, ex Audi, who designed the Audi TT, the A4 and A3. And this is why this Kia is, unquestionably, the best looking car in his segment (and better looking than many others costing more).
what the heck is he talking about he likes the disign but he doesn't he likes thinks but he doesn't he must have been talking about american cars roomy better view comfy etc he is talking about a John deer tractors LOL sucky review ...... reviewer mostly nice looking car kia did it .....
a quick glance without a double take may have people thinking they just saw a Maserati Quattroporte-that's what I'm thinking after seeing that C pillar and window line on the back doors...
This car is amazing but there's only one problem...it's a KIA. You can revive Hyundai but the name KIA is so badly tarnished that It's too late for that. Instead, Hyundai should downsize Kia (sort of like Scion) and save designs like this (and Peter Shryer) for it's luxury division (hopefully called Genesis)
@soiceyboy33 I like your plan, but I honestly think the Kia Brand has a fighting chance. However, like you stated, I think Hyundai should focus more on a luxury brand, as it will bring in more profits than Kia will ever.
@soiceyboy33 Yeah ! Design is totally european .The car looks beautiful .The only thing I would change is KIA's emblems - use letter 'K' instead of 'KIA' logo .The oval shape reminds me Ford logo, ... and older (sorry) cheap looking KIA'a. I wish some Japanese car makers had better car designers ...
@soiceyboy33 Totally disagree. A couple years ago I would have NEVER driven a Kia. After driving the new Soul, Sportage and Optima, I would drive a Kia in a heartbeat. This new Optima has won TONS of awards and is now one of the top 5 buyer-considered family sedans. If Kia keeps this up, they'll finally gain the good reputation they deserved.
The 2011 Optima and Sonatas build quality, resale value and reliability match the competition. The Fusion, Accord, Altima, and Camry. From what I've read. People always expect Hyundai and Kia to still be unreliable pieces of crap cars today. Well sorry, they're not anymore. This is 2011, not the 90's.
@tom11zz884 ... last report i read , KIA SPORTAGE 2011 got the same resale estimate score as a Honda. you might just eat your words. We can't keep up with demand at our VERNON BC dealership. supply demand pressures resales. i can't get KIA Rondo or Sorrento owners to trade in. they love their cars.
@zjumps33 cant help but not to. Even if they keep jacking styling cues from other cars they end up perfecting it and making it better then the other cars. As long as they keep making amazaing cars like this i will always buy japanese/korean/german cars
@zjumps33 Do you have any idea how many cars in the market looks like each other, and not precisely Hyundai and Kia? Just look a the new Durango 2011, it looks like many cars, depending on the viewing angle to look at it.
Hyundai and Kia designs are so singular, at the point that they win awards and recognitions, without mentioning quality, safety and performance, over many japanese brands. BTW, how do you think Lexus climbed to the position where it is now? BY RIPPING OFF ALL EURO DESIGNS!
@zjumps33 hey Korea, your car is not design as well, your car copying every each cars, i see a lots of ppl say it look like camry, Fiesta, vw, everythings!! Japanese make much better, they Never copy design for every cars! Japanese so Smarts than You.
@bandrews0526 Nice! I'm 17 and I was looking at these too but I decided to wait and have this be my 2nd car or somethin cause i wanted to be economical and not make a target of myself pulling up to school . I ended up getting a 2008 Saturn Aura wit chrome wheels and other extras as my first car. Still a real nice car and I'm so grateful to have it! :-) I think it and the 2011 Optima are two of the best looking and designed mid-sized cars to come out in a while. Too bad Saturn is gone now tho.
'ved I worked at Orlando Kia for some time, and I've never been more proud of Kia. The interior and exterior styling on this car is great, and it is very fun to drive.
I don't think Consumer Reports is being truthful. The new Sonata and Optima have been widely criticized for their disconnected steering feel and their suspension which is not class leading. Let's hear about that.
Hey there guys at consumer reports.. What are the differences ( if any) between the 2011 sonata and optima? It seems to me they are almost identical in pricing and features except for body styling.
About its design, most Korean consumers were pretty skptical about the design of domestic cars compared with Audi, Mercedez and BMW.However, putting aside the fact that sales of domestic cars have been always high no matter,2011 Optima's sale has been dramatically higher than expected and it is laking supply now due to some portion not saled for export. Anyway, the best design in its class among all car makers, one of the best designed cars on the planet. Reliability?you will see and it will show
@terryturk No, Korean is really an Copying cars design, it ppl say that what they look like, Fiesta, Camry, VW, and more.. u know Japan, it's better, Fact, they really reliability than kia, they Never copy design, japan is Really better design themself..
hope all American consumers know that the reason you guys pay so less for Hyundai/Kia Korean cars is that Korean consumers in Korea pay more for you to pay less. They are complaining about this issue for a decade now. Plus, American consumers will get better quality + warranty with less price... : D lucky!
@cocoonsoul the korean domestic models are way more advanced then the export models, but the export got a better warranty, bigger engines, but sometimes the domestic korean materials are better,i know i worked for a domestic korean auto manufacturer ,i got several domestic models from korea and compared them to the u.s. versions
@pjkPA Apparently, South Korea believes in an economic national sovereignty. Whereas US policy is dictated by a tiny, but obviously "influential", self-enriching minority. South korea shouldn't be derided for our national failings.
Lets face it the old optima was not that good! actually it was one of the worst! But I think this is a huge step forward! Still not the best, but not far away!
I know South Korean manufacturer it's stepping up to major auto-market but for we customer hope and wish that they keep the price reasonable and same good warranty. With that they would take over the auto-market period just as Electronic's taking over the market such as Samsung and LG.
The truth of the matter is All other manufactures should Consider Themselves Put On Notice. Rather they champion supreme reliability and build quality (ie. Toyota/Honda) or superior engineering pedigree and racing heritage (ie. VW/Audi, BMW, MB etc.) Hyundai/Kia's 5yr/60k bumper2bumper warr/ Buy Back Policy If You Lose Your job/ 24hr roadside asst-5yrs/ 10yr-100k pwr train warr. are unbeatable. No one else has big nuff balz to match. In these rough econ times, they will win many new buyers
Acura needs to be worried...very worried. People buy cars, for the most part, based on a connection to the design. Add a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty ,good looks and it's a sale. This car is amazing from every angle, and I would not discount it's build quality in any way. Acura now builds bloated ugly automobiles and sells them for outrageous prices. Let's face it. The Acura badge is not worth the price any longer, and the design is embarrasing. The KIA is a game changer. Good job!
@DrewFaron i agree with you. ACURA after the new mdx, then the new TL just losts the game. their cars bring tears to my eyes. acura seriously needs to redo everything. hondas look good, then why cant expensive hondas look good?
you're right pal!! that two cars-Hyundai sonata and KIA optima are good value for money loaded cars and costs less too!!! its better we buy those cars rather than a Acura or Lexus!
I test drove the Hyundai Sonata, hanlding was just so/so, but it was the looks of the Sonata that I really couldn't get past. The Sonata's sagging front end looked like an old man who's bloated belly is hanging over his belt line. I don't have any problem however with this Kia. They did a good job of avoiding all of that "swoopiness" of the Sonata but at the same time gave it a very distinct look. Where-as I crossed the Sonata off my list, the 2011 Optima stays on it!
funny they just put chevrolet in there rear view mirrors! Add ford to list soon honda, toyota. Im a car nut love bmws old e30s,jeeps,tacomas,nissan trucks and I now drive soul!
The interior layout is weird lol

@zjumps33 cant help but not to. Even if they keep jacking styling cues from other cars they end up perfecting it and making it better then the other cars. As long as they keep making amazaing cars like this i will always buy japanese/korean/german cars
nsulademon 1 year ago
@zjumps33 not everyone in the world is rich, not everyone can afford to pay $60k-$120k for a luxury car.
Hyundai and kia give you luxury and reliability at an affordable price, german cars are just over priced and high maintenance.
matrixloader 1 year ago
@zjumps33 Do you have any idea how many cars in the market looks like each other, and not precisely Hyundai and Kia? Just look a the new Durango 2011, it looks like many cars, depending on the viewing angle to look at it.
Hyundai and Kia designs are so singular, at the point that they win awards and recognitions, without mentioning quality, safety and performance, over many japanese brands. BTW, how do you think Lexus climbed to the position where it is now? BY RIPPING OFF ALL EURO DESIGNS!
wtrdogg20 1 year ago

Let's hear about that.
motormusique 1 year ago
Hey there guys at consumer reports.. What are the differences ( if any) between the 2011 sonata and optima? It seems to me they are almost identical in pricing and features except for body styling.

Korea should build a statue built for Peter Schryer. this car is hot with the turbo.
amazonrush5 1 year ago
About its design, most Korean consumers were pretty skptical about the design of domestic cars compared with Audi, Mercedez and BMW.However, putting aside the fact that sales of domestic cars have been always high no matter,2011 Optima's sale has been dramatically higher than expected and it is laking supply now due to some portion not saled for export. Anyway, the best design in its class among all car makers, one of the best designed cars on the planet. Reliability?you will see and it will show
terryturk 1 year ago
@terryturk No, Korean is really an Copying cars design, it ppl say that what they look like, Fiesta, Camry, VW, and more.. u know Japan, it's better, Fact, they really reliability than kia, they Never copy design, japan is Really better design themself..
d1gps15 1 year ago
Never thought I'd like a Kia, but damn that is a nice looking car. Peter Schreyer is the genius and Audi was stupid to let him go.
dcl97 1 year ago
hope all American consumers know that the reason you guys pay so less for Hyundai/Kia Korean cars is that Korean consumers in Korea pay more for you to pay less. They are complaining about this issue for a decade now. Plus, American consumers will get better quality + warranty with less price... : D lucky!
cocoonsoul 1 year ago
@cocoonsoul the korean domestic models are way more advanced then the export models, but the export got a better warranty, bigger engines, but sometimes the domestic korean materials are better,i know i worked for a domestic korean auto manufacturer ,i got several domestic models from korea and compared them to the u.s. versions

pjkPA 1 year ago

Good job!
DrewFaron 1 year ago 13
@DrewFaron i agree with you. ACURA after the new mdx, then the new TL just losts the game. their cars bring tears to my eyes. acura seriously needs to redo everything. hondas look good, then why cant expensive hondas look good?

@skbuoy i agree acura needs to get with the program

you're right pal!! that two cars-Hyundai sonata and KIA optima are good value for money loaded cars and costs less too!!! its better we buy those cars rather than a Acura or Lexus!
vinaycamay 1 year ago
I test drove the Hyundai Sonata, hanlding was just so/so, but it was the looks of the Sonata that I really couldn't get past. The Sonata's sagging front end looked like an old man who's bloated belly is hanging over his belt line. I don't have any problem however with this Kia. They did a good job of avoiding all of that "swoopiness" of the Sonata but at the same time gave it a very distinct look. Where-as I crossed the Sonata off my list, the 2011 Optima stays on it!

I live in South Korea... and I just recently bought this car last week.
And it's extremely good looking.... esp. with the 18inch wheels.
The sad thing is... there is a 2month waiting list here in Korea due to sharp demand.
Since last month, the Kia K5 sales exceeded Hyundai Sonatas and Samsung SM5 sales. This trend will continue here in Korea.
Expect the Optima in the US to cause a big stir...
