This song has been on the very TOP of my fave list since I can remember. And PLEASE give a listen to Pat Suzuki's version. It was featured in the movie, BILOXI BLUES and is absolutely KILLER!
This takes me back to when I first heard this record when it made the hit parade - it was, and still is, magic. And I still have record somewhere amongst my old 78s.
Thank you for this. I'm a child of the 50's, and the family( adults and kids) pretty much listened to the same music, as with most other shared interests with a close family. And couldn't Chester (Chet) pick that guitar to pieces? Mary Ford was (in my opinion), a peerless singer who only got a small part of her due from the public. Saw Chet perform at Carnegie Hall (with Susie Boguss), about 1996, and the ol' boy still had it!!
anyone have any idea where to find good tabs of les paul's music, or licks he used, or anything? I understand the tab thing would be exahsting on a song with 20 parts xD but I still wonder
Les Paul, solid body guitar innovator and father of multi-track recording. Mary Ford underrated fifties vocalist. They had a show on b&w TV in the fifties. After hearing this song on TV, I remember asking how she could sing with more than one voice at the same time. Thanks for the great memories!
Wow, whats weird is that I usually listen to stuff with really low tuned guitars, fast drumming, and cookie monsters vocals yet this song is so moving. Aside from les paul's awesome playing mary's voice is awesome.
What a cool idea to actually play the 78 record here! 78s sound great when in good condition. Les Paul records sounded better because he was the ultimate recording engineer of the 1950's. Enjoy!
In 1951, "hit singles" were still issued on "78"'s, although 45rpm records soon caught up to that format in popularity (and sales), and eventually the major record companies discontinued the "78 single" by the fall of 1958. This was Les & Mary's first hit recording from the spring of '51...
What a fantastic recording by Paul and Mary!
