do the blades have a standard base so I could buy them for mulit branded toolsie Dremel, bosch, milwaulkee, etc?

I am not certain. The blades do fit one of the Fein models,but that is as much as I know.

what thickness metal will it cut? what about cast iron down pipe?

An angle grinder with a 1mm thick cutting disk would be better on a down pipe, if you can get it in.
The PMF would cut it, but it would take a long time and you would go through several blades!
This machine is not really designed for cutting thick metal, but it can get you out of trouble in a tight spot.
Do the blue 10.8 volt batts fit the green model?
