  • I once made a tooth-pick out of an entire ancient Red Wood Tree .. true story

  • nice percison id pry get that far and hiy just a bit wrong and watch it shatter=0

  • This is a superior technology that I require myself to learn.

  • marty i think you should try to replicate the sweetwater biface. i know some people have tried but im pretty sure you could do it.

  • i have a monsterous chunk of flint, its rounded on all corners and giving me hell just trying to get a simple flake out of it any tips????????

  • can you recommend any courses? how'd you first learn?

  • Tim Dillards class at The center for american archaeology at Kampsville, IL I believe it's a week course in the summer. Either that or just attend knap-ins but it's very rare to encounter any traditional knapping at these events. I learned by my exposure at the kampsville field school. thanks

  • what happend to the last vid? hope the blade didnt break it was lookn good

  • No, I did some nice edgework on it and finished it, but I never took more video of that process. I'll try to remember to show it in my next video.

  • Great video, I learned a lot. I can't wait to try it. It probably won't work very wel but I'll keep on doing it till I got it right!

    Thank you!

  • Takes practice, just keep with it! Thanks for the comment.

  • whats up marty i live in flippin ar. just wondering if you are comeing to the whiteriver knappin in cotter i read you live somewhere in ar also looking forward to more vids

  • I hope to be there. Probably there on sat. see ya

  • Very nice ! I am learning everything about this type of material for my study Archaeology and I have a practical exam too. Keep up the great work. Maybe I can learn from your videos.

    Encore!!!

    Steve

  • hi steve, I need to get a new camera then I will. I like the tail on that hardin you just made. Very realistic and not overly stylized. Good job.

  • Marty can you tell us what the difference is between thinning flakes and blending flakes? Cant figure it out myself or how its done.

Also, do you have any flakes about arrowhead sized you would like to trade for some obsidian?

    David T

  • sent you a pm David.

  • Man, I really like the commentary during your videos. It REALLY helps when you explain what you're trying to do. Being from Texas, I'd love to watch you make a Harahey Knife or a Pandale. Haraheys are my favorite blades with Pandales being my favorite points. I guess it's due to the beveling.

    Thanks for the great videos!

    predatorsniper

  • Yeah! Marty how about showing us how they are done!!!! :-)

  • Sorry I hit "reply" at the wrong place. Newbie!!!!!

  • Flint Ridge is the 1st weekend this year. The main Weekend is Aug 31, Sept 1, Sept 2. Im thinking about shooting up there. It's about an 8 hr. drive from my place. I being going by myself. If you wanna ride let me know. I live in Dyersburg, Tn. you can mapquest and see how far it would be from you.

  • Very nice Marty! Just sat down and watched 1-5. Will you be a Flint Ridge this year? Meximike

  • Isn't it the 2nd or 3rd weekend of sept? I don't think I'll be there because I'll be at Beaver Creek in NE. You'll have to come to Arkansas sometime.

  • Very...nice!

  • Thanks

  • Marty, I just sat down to watch one and ended up watching them all non-stop. Great video! See you at BCVII

    Rick

  • Thanks Rick. See you there. (BCVII is a great primitive skills gathering N. of Stuart, NE held the 2nd weekend of Sept.)

  • Very interesting...did these blades (in pre-history) typically start out as such LARGE slabs of stone?

    (great video series!)

  • If large stone was available it was used. Mostly it wasn't uses for such large bifaces, but in some traditions it was.

  • outstanding Marty. raw stone too. you really work those platforms...you hand eye coordination for hitting that big thin blade with that antler is amaing.

  • Lots of practice as you know Jerry. Somtimes I've got my fingers right under the edge so I can feel it, and that helps train me where to hit because I can feel it.

  • Marty, I do that too on hand held flaking. it is hard to get new knappers to do that, cause they are afraid of getting a little cut...tough to convince them. you have a great time with rick at the knapin at Stuart, Neb....dang I will be in Omaha the 1st of sept but already have a flight back booked, and have to work on tuesday
