I don't know how I feel about Napoleon, but I'll give him this: the man was a genius when it came to understanding people. He's amazing for that talent alone.
Napoleon was a true hero!. He has been a victim of character assassination by the dishonest "historians" like many other great men of modern and ancient time...
Thanks to Boney France is still streets ahead of Britain in health and education.
extraordinary ! No politician in France would dare to say that !
To those who compare Napoleon with Hitler: Sure Napoleon was a rough warlord, and became a dictator. Yet he was also a son of the Enlightenment: He had been educated as an officer-engineer; he believed in reason and science; he didn't care about races and religions; he was a good manager and law maker in peacetime (he did not start a single war until 1808).
The very contrary of Hitler's basic background and beliefs.
Frankly i wouldn't mind "offending" Napoleon - calling him a dictator, for example. What I care about is historical truth, and to compare Napoleon with Hitler is just absurd.
Oh trust me, people called him a dictator straight into his face. He didn't really mind. Besides, he was a good dictator. He did a lot of great stuff for France.
I saw this discussion and thought wow I wonder if Napoleon is mentioned, and he is indeed. In the full anthem:
"Cross the Vistula and Warta
And Poles we shall be
We've been shown by Bonaparte
Ways to victory"
However since most nations often only sing/play one verse or so and the chorus it may not always be mentioned on websites since his name is mentioned in the second verse.
What are you talking about? An a historian, I strongly urge you to reconsider other historical figures. How about Franklin Roosevelt, who salvaged the capitalist system in America and reached out to the common man? Or Alice Paul, who endured force feedings in prison during the struggle for a suffrage amendment? What did this godless and arrogant dictator do for anyone? King, Kennedy, and Gandhi outrank him by far. They were the greats. Oh, and OBAMA 08!!
Well... don't get angry... this was only an English Workshop project about and x or y historical figure. I know that there have been and there still are better and more important persons in the world. But, well, we can't denie that Bonaparte leaved a huge footprint in history. Thank you for your comment!!!
What are you talking about? You cant compare FDR to Napoleon Bonaparte. he may have brought America out of the depression but he hardly salvaged capitalism. Napoleon took post revolutionary France and transformed it into a super power. Napoleon did plenty for many, have you ever heard of the Civil Code? you cannot compare civil rights activists to an Emperor. And to say Obama (although surely a great man) outranks Napoleon is purely ignorant.
I am not comparing; I am talking about historical figures that people choose to glorify/idolize. Great humanitarians who devote their lives to something larger than themselves. You may figure that Napoleon gave France something better than they had before, but in retrospect, it is clear he acted out of self-interest. I am always shocked that people adore him so much.
I agree with the first 2...and to an extent with Hitler for leadership qualities and tactics in gaining power and expanding, but you surely dont include his policies as well do ya?
Well listen subhuman i donot intend to make human a biological waste like you, i had to imagine that an inferior being had problem with adolf hitler , Keep watching jewish media and movies subhuman and stop posting massive and idiotic "points of view"
yah know you should really try and find some new words to use... sub human is really getting old.. especially someone who is far more "intelligent" than i...
Oh how i Admire Napoleon. Even in the shadow of deafeat and all the odds mounting against him he looked at it and charged head on. Never waivering. Vive l'Empereur! Vive l'Empereur!!!

Napoleon wasn't a warlord. He was made to go to war mostly by England and her bankers.
Sure, he has made blunders...but no man is perfect. He was a saint compared to Nelsons and Wellingtons who were only mere pawns to their masters.

I think it is very offensive to compare Napoleon to Hitler! Hitler commited genocide! Napoleon did no such thing.

napoleontas. You don't know well Napoleon. He did not do ethnic cleansing like hitler. He even opened jew guettos in Italy.
He has his tomb in les invalides(Paris). Now tell me where is the tomb of hitler ?
hitler was nothing compared to Napoleon. The name of Napoleon is even cited in the Polish anthem.
He was a son of the french revolution. Due to his campaigns in Egypt, hieroglyphes have been deciphered(Rosetta stone).
He let a civil code still used in 20 countries(totally or partly)

I do not hear his name being mentioned in the polish anthem
Mygoodmusicchoices 3 years ago
His complete name is Napoleon Bonaparte. In the polish anthem, they call him Bonaparte only. It is probably why you did not hear it. But it is there.
chris25fr 3 years ago
No, I know that his whole name is Napoleon Bonaparte, but I'm saying that when I looked up the lyrics, his name was not in them.
