This is sad that Karen Dawn does not understand the finer points of marketing. Animal Welfare, that has existed for almost 200 years in the US, has hindered the Animal Rights movements greatly by distracting and pacifying public perception. Ms. Dawns biased and polarized view is an excellent example of just that marketing spin in motion. It is difficult to know where to even begin to discuss Ms. Dawns lack of knowledge concerning financial agendas and industry in the US! This is just sad!
Eloquently stated, Karen! Animal welfare is about minimizing animal suffering today in a world where we cannot stop their gruesome slaughter tomorrow.
Those who would oppose immediate welfare reforms to reduce actual animal suffering for a distant goal of a predominately vegan world are the same narrow minds criticising fellow animal rights activists for daring to stop some of the worst abuses that animals suffer on factory farms.
Animal welfarists are animal rightists who mean it!
Karen, you make some great points. Anything that can be done to reduce the suffering of animals is worthwhile. We can't say,"Why bother. They're going to die anyway." For the animal in a gestation crate or battery cage, if we take away that crate or cage, then at least in its short life, it has some freedom of movement. Helping animals to suffer less, is a step in the right direction. And it gets people thinking about these issues.
Karen, your examples for speciesism are so obviously wrong. The main difference is that the efforts to improve the human prisoners DO NOT harm the chances of them being released, DO NOT increase the total human suffering and DO NOT increase the chances of more future human prisoners. It is time for you to stop raising this false comparisons.
It does not matter whether you agree with the people who resist welfare acts or not, from their point of view it is different. I hope you will realize it.
