that 5 hour aptitude test looks fucking solid!! is there anyone here who's actually gone through it (preferably someone wanting to be/is a pilot)? any advice for practicing for it?
Advice for anyone considering an RAF commission: Relax and focus on your own self importance, it's all about you after all. Abandon all common sense - it's not the 'officer way' of doing things. Learn to 'talk down' to people in a patronising manner - they'll respect you for it. . Never let incompetence get in the way of over-confidence - officers know everything.
Embrace management bullshit and meaningless corporate jargon - it's a way of glossing over your ineptitude.
that obviously coming from someone who has NO IDEA what the air force is all about and doesnt understand what officers have to go through to EARN their respect!
guys, best advice is to relax and take it in your stride. get good at mental maths and using a joystick. speed distance time questiions can be revised online. other than that theres not much you can do, they are designed to test skills you are born with, not develop. good luck
congrats. i am curious, aptitude tests.. what are they similar to. what are the generic components?? Anything to be apprehensive about after 10 years of examinations n all that shizzle. /due to grad uni.
@ibowlgas I did for the aptitude tests only as I was in a university air squadron. my advice is go to uni so you don't get disappointed when you do well and they turn round and say "we have no jobs". If you want to go in now, my advice is completely rape your fitness levels, practice leadership skills, practice mental maths and using a joystick and learn everything about the RAF and yourself. main points are to be honest, speak clearly and relax so just be yourself.
I failed for pilot back in november 2008. I've decided to go uni and get back on track with studies coz iv found that iv slowed down alot from being outa school for 2 years ( i took 2 years out). im now 20 and im planning on apply for the FAA again next year! All i can say to anyone taking the Navy or the raf apptitude tests becoz they are very similar..is to RELAX..its so important..dnt get into a downward spiral and do ur best. U'll be fine. Pls RELAX coz wen i failed..id never felt so dwn b4
Sorry to hear that. I served as an MTD airmen from 97-05. I tried so hard to get my GCSE's to go for pilot but never made the application stage. I don't have A-levels or GCSE's but I did manage to get onto a foundation year at college when I left and made it to uni studying biology. Now studying a master in biotechnology before, hopefully, going onto my PhD. Good luck at uni, hope you decide to give the RAF another go
I can't say much more than you've already been told about OASC. The main thing I noticed from it was those that made it through day 2 mainly came down to how they conducted themselves on the group discussion and also on the leaderless tasks and just make sure you get stuck in!
As for the filter make sure you know your stuff on aircraft and location of them and the role of RAF. Also make sure you can remember off the top of your head what you did at school with dates.
cheers for that, i've been trying to swat up on aircraft and their locations but surely they wouldn't expect me to know the location and squadron of every aircraft, even down to the little 2 seater choppers used for hopping around cities?
I know the location of things like the nimrods, the sentinals, the fighter aircraft like typhoon, tornados and harriers and I vaguely know which squadrons use them.
And yea, I guess the group discussion if a good way of putting yourself out there.
Well you should not get asked the actual squadron names more just fixed wing locations. Ie C130 -RAF lyneham, F2 - RAF Coningsby etc, and RAF mission statement, all that is on their website.
Group discussion and current affairs v important. Read 'the week' which will help.
Leadership tasks just get stuck in, contribute where you see opportunity, especially on the leaderless task.
Its no worries mate, I passed the four days so ive just got my fingers crossed waiting for the letter at the moment. The qualifications for each banch are on the RAF careers website. It was draining as theres a lot of pressure for the four days but it was also a great experience and i really enjoyed it. Most of the tests there are natural abilities so its just a case of doing your best really and above all enjoy yourself.
A lot of tests contribute to the aptitude for each branch and i couldnt tell you which ones, The red dots with the joystick and a similar test keeping a dot center screen count towards pilot aptitude. Its all natural abilities though, bottom line you either have it or you dont, its nothing worth worrying about. OASC is a great experience, i cant see anyone not enjoying it. Just have a good time and best of luck to you.
see forums and youtube as such are constantly pumped with shit about raf selection from people with no better to do then lie, ive been indoctrinated with the thought that you must have like 12 A's at gcse and 3 A's at a-level. and lol at your air cadets comment i wa sin it for a year before i left cause its full of know-it-all little shits
sorry mate, RAF wont look at you for pilot unless your 6/6, Royal Navy will however accept 6/12 corectable to 6/6. Found that out after rejection in June so trying for the FAA next year.
6/5 is better than 6/6 as it refers to being able to seeing size 5 font at 6m as opposed to seeing size 6 font at 6m. I recently attended OASC and passed the eyesight for Pilot and had it confirmed that the eyesight standards have been brought in line with the Royal Navy.
got back from there yesterday, had a brilliant 4 days, plus passing pilot medical, fitness, and aptitude doesnt get better.....welll matbe the job, plus being th 90th anniversay we got to see the celebrations over the college hall......brilliant
WSOp(l) Uncorrected 6/24 correctable to 6/6 Cyl range between -4/+4. It is the least stringent of all the airbourne roles, WSOp(Aco & EW) are -2/+2. Btw good choice with the linguist, going in for that myself and i wear contacts.
Dont know if it will help you now, but it might help others.
I do find it a bit amusing that most RAF personnel's favourite movie is Top Gun, a movie about the US Navy lol...but it's my favourite movie too so I guess I'm laughing at myself.

Can you be a pilot with contacts?
VivaCutiePie19 2 years ago
I think as long as you have 20/20 it should be ok. Im not 100% sure though
N0bb13 2 years ago
you have to pass the minimum standards for a pilot without contacts, and then if you succeed in becoming a pilot, you can wear contacts.
TheHusky9 2 years ago
that does'nt make sense?
VivaCutiePie19 2 years ago
basically, if you need the contacts to reach the minimum standards for an RAF pilot then no, you cannot be an RAF pilot.
TheHusky9 2 years ago
oh thxs but oh crap
VivaCutiePie19 2 years ago
try the navy, i heard they have less strict requirements for a pilot? If not, then maybe civvy street is for u

Hey guys. I've got my filter interview soon (which I am quietly confident about). I am applying for WSOp linguist and crewman.
What I'm not so confident is the OASC......
Anyone want to give me some info about the stuff I could be expected to be getting up to.
I've got A levels and 1 year experience at Uni (after leaving cos I hated the course). I'll be 20 when I do the 4 day course.

hi, just came back from oasc... didnt realise that there was such a big cut on day 3, only 8 out of 30 made it through to interviews!
just have to spend the next three weeks waiting for the letter box to let me out of my misery!
PS... there are some real geeks in the raf, especially going for pilot, still that comes with a being an air cadet from the age of 10 i suppose.

sorry mate, RAF wont look at you for pilot unless your 6/6, Royal Navy will however accept 6/12 corectable to 6/6. Found that out after rejection in June so trying for the FAA next year.
FallenPhoenix86 3 years ago
bollocks, I have 6/5 and I passed for WSOp and Pilot.
carricklee 3 years ago
I was rejected on those grounds, so it is most certainly not bollocks!
RAF pilot vision requirements: Visual accuity (minimum) - uncorrected 6/6, near N5, refraction range - plano to + 1.75DS, Cyl 0.75 dioptres, muscle ballance - (maddox rod) Dist Eso 6 - Exo 8, Near Eso 6 - Exo 16, Conv +/-10cm, Accom: age 17-21 equal or less than 11cm 21-25 11-13 cm, CP - 2, Stereopsis 120 degrees
Regarding WSOp uncorected acuity is 6/24, 6/60 for WSOp(L)
Passing WSOp does not equal a pass for pilot!
FallenPhoenix86 3 years ago
