i have 2004 saab 9-3 2.0 Arc and have replaced the water pump, springs, sway bar bushings still make noise when cold. The antilock brake module i replaced twice. the fuel tank level sensor, the fuel pressure sensor and now the oil level sensor is leaking they want 700 to fix cause you have to drop the pan to replace it. the headlights blow out all the time. the emblems fell off. both mirrors fell off at 155 dollars each. the glass falls right out. what else? got 185000miles on it tho. lol
u must have been gutted, i would have been spending as much as u have on this. maybe u just had a dodgy one. they should have replaced the car. i have a 2003 2.2tid linear and it has done 210,000 miles and still going. i will be getting the 1.9 vetor as a replacement. i love these cars, and dont want a bmw, mercedes or audi. u still got it or you got a new car?
Sorry to hear about your Saab. My general impression is that they were better built before when they weren't owned by GM. I'm very happy with my 1994 Saab 900 though, I've never had any major issues with it.
i had to get half that stuff fixed!! the fan, the belt retracter, struts, shift knob. but atleast it was covered by warranty!! glad i bought extended warranty!!
don't know what you've been doing with yours, i've had mine for some years now and it has done over 300.000 km (if you want imperial do the math or join the rest of the world).
it's 8 years old now and i have to say it works like new. nothing broken nothing replaced it's even got the original turbo. and it doesn't squeak.. apparently that ISN'T a problem on all saabs then is it now...
I bought one of these used ('03 2.0T model, all stock) with 86 and a half thousand miles on it. Owner was selling it to replace it with a large SUV. He never had any issues with it, only went to the dealer's because a lost key, oil and filter changes and replacement brake pads. Only put gas in it and water for the wipers. He took his family on trips through Europe and nothing ever happened. I was expecting the car to be all rattly due to the age, but nothing whatsoever. No regrets buying it.
I'm really sad that Saab have a lot of financial problems. Because if not, I would buy a saab 9-3 for sure.
I'm sure these cars are good. Three teachers of me was fan and made me discover the saabs. They was unfunny looking, but incredibly tough and long lasting. And, absolutely good for our snowy roads.
I think the problems you encountered are coming from an anormal use of these elements. But it could although be, that the builder was unmotivated because he was sure to loose his job.
Just bad luck really.....I have a 2005 9.3 1.8t Vector with Hirsch 195bhp dealer upgrade. Been faultness, apart from the odd creak from the dashboard - trim fitting isn't that great. Apart from that's its been a fantastic car to cover distances in - I'm at 92k.
Well just to let you know my mother owns a Saab 9-5 aero 2005 2.3 - 250bhp. Since she bought it in 2008 it hasn't missed a beat. Even in winter no problems at all. Solid car. bloody quick too.
Don't let the 9-3 put you off saab, the 9-5 is a better bet.
Damn your car is like that because of you my friend, you better take of your car... I have a 03' SAAB 9-3 Vector! it has 75k and is the best investment I've ever made I always take care of my care with oils and basic stuff, I so proud of my car its frikin good looking and powerful, exppend some bucks and get ur SAAB like is supposed to!
@visionit2007 humnnn sorry to hear that, what can I say... bad luck? Well Saab needs special care is true as far as now my car is my babe. Just sell it but your vid title may sound a lil offensive for some Saab owner, good luck...
@visionit2007 Your problem is probably because of all your addons, with all that tinkering, weight distribution is changed, part stress increases, etc.
Dude, i have same car but in lower option (vector) from the same Year... and I can't say anything bad about this machine. Ouh, I can - my friend spent a lot more money to kepp his audi (2004 a4) in good condition. Go ahead and repair Your car- if You don't like it - sell it. But putting such a movies on YouTube is just silly, You know, something like: "do not use firefox - it's crushing on my PC!"
@superbird426 35 years old, foul-mouthed and illiterate... what a proud moment this must be for you. If you've nothing useful to say, keep your trap shut.
What is that parrot thing you have there on the dash? I see the wire runs into the dash unit, which means you had to somewhat disassemble the dash. This could be the source of the lights not working or the weird noises that the car is emitting. Just a thought
The odd noises turned out to be a plastic cog which had broken inside the air con unit, called a stepping motor. Very common fault apparently, but it's been fixed a while... this video is 3yrs old.
No major problems since. The flywheel packed up after 30,000 miles but that's wear and tear.
My ten year old 9-3 that I paid 3 grand for has over 120K miles on it and the motor to retract the radio antenna doesn't work. I'm nearly suicidal !!! Well, except when I'm not grinning from ear to ear beating 'stangs from the stop light into the merge while couched in heated leather seat luxury. Is it weird to pet your Saab and say: "Whose a good girl *whoah* whoooose a goood girrrl, you are, yesyourarrrrrre...ooogywoogy"
I'm still going to buy one. I'm sure the mid range poke will make up for its foibles :) I may keep my e46 for a few months after though, just in case I change my mind lol
I have a 2006 9-3 Aero. I also have the "click" in the dash and occasionally the shifter knob will literally take flight! It’s my first Saab and all I hear is "that’s just a Saab "quirk". The car is one of the fastest, smoothest rides I've been in. Hope it all works out, they are fun to drive!
you prabably got a defected one, im on my 2nd saab, i love these cars
and yeah never go back to the dealership for repairs because they want your money, and there not going to fix it completly because they want you coming back
get a passat (everyone complains but mines' running perfect at over 5 years old and over 100k miles... absolutely reliable i my case and interior looks like new)
"rear suspension creeks", unfortunately when gm bought saab they became everything that saab wasnt
i have a saab 900 and everything since the day it was bought new has and is working perfectly, gm ruined saab and i am so sad for what saab could have been
i have a gm saab only had one issue and it was on warranty dealer fixed it right away and i got over 67000 miles my second car will be a 9-5 aero though they just look sexy especially the new ones
i HAVE HAD MY 93 VECTOR SPORT 150 TID FOR 5 YEARS AND COVERED 105000 MILES WITH NO TROUBLE.YOU GET GOOD AND BAD IN EVERY CAR.MY MATE'S AUDI A4 SPENT MORE TIME IN THE DEALERS THAN IT HAS ON HIS DRIVE.SO THERE YOU GO.
This is true. The quality of this GM saab was bloody awful. Nearly every 9-3 will lose paint from the mirrors. Even after only 2 years. The paint will just fall off to pieces. And the AC temperature sensor buttons will lose the color indicators. The button of the glove compartment button will lose paint and look ugly in just 2 years. This car has awful quality. GM sucks.
All I can say is... I think you bought a monday version, mate.
We have two cars in the family, a 2001 9-5 2.3T and it hasn't gone wrong once, it has like 330 000km on it. The other one is a 2008 9-3 TTiD estate, and it hasn't gone wrong once, 116 000km. From experience, SAAB's are reliable unless they were made by a guy/machine that was drunk :)
i would also go back to the dealership because of the gearknob. But i have a question: Is the earlier verson of the saab 9-3 sweedish, or american and is it any good? or is the 900 better? Im going to buy myself a ne car and i looked at saab, and they make some fine beautiful cars! i appreciate any good replies. And sorry for my awful english, im norwegian. Cheers!
Living in the land of SAAB (Sweden) like all cars, doesn´t matter what make, you´ll find there´s always a black sheep or two. There are 8 Saabs on my road, from an 1997 9000 2.0t, 2000 95 2.0t station car (mine) 2006 areo station car, 2007 93 station car 1.8t. No problems to report apart from the old 9000 had the starter motor replaced last summmer. I´m shocked to see that you´ve had such bad look with your saab.
That sure is a bad run for the owner. I drove a 1.9TiD Sportcombi for two years and it never once put a foot wrong. Other friends of ours own a 2004 9-3 Convertible since new and its been fault-less. Problems such as these tend to be associated with a particular batch of cars produced. Saab may have been using inferior parts from an old supplier or something.
Saabs are simply great. MY has last more than 160k and I drive the shit out of it everyday. -45 in the winter or 210 km/h on the pot holes and cracks filled highways still runs smooth : NO maintenance done except for coolant/oil and filters...
I have '96 900 SE and a '99 Viggen and they're the 2 best cars I've ever owned. Looks like you just got unlucky. But in all honesty never heard much complaint. In fact Saab has an almost cult like following in some places. I'll never drive anything but a Saab, I can tell you that much.
and the Honda Accord is a dream not one fault in 30K miles, also it is a better car to drive, the IVtec system is better than a turbo anyday, my conclusion is Saab need to get their act together they could learn alot from Honda....
Saab 93's are crap i bought a 2006 light turbo version, with 6k miles it was never away from the Dealership, i drove their courtesy car more than i drove my own and the 93 diesel courtesy car was also crap it broke down whilst on the motorway, my own car had two new turbos fitted and both front window regulators replaced as the windows packed up, the SID stopped working completely it was replaced but went on blink again. Ended up trading in for a Honda Accord 2.0 Ivtec .
Every car maker has some problems with a number of cars,I don't know an exact number but every car maker, even Mercedes has some problems with a number of vehicles.
@laidback8282 Someone who has paid £13,500 cash for a car + warranty in the hope that it lasts longer than a few months before bits start dropping off.
I've deleted the two previous comments! Thanks for correcting your grammar and spelling though... it's frustrating getting comments from illiterate folk who are too stupid to form a coherent sentence.
@visionit2007 why would you knowingly slag it of for being a vauxhall vectra in drag and go out and buy it in the first place dont understand got over 90 000 on mine same model same year no prob think just bad luck.......and gear nob still intact.........
waste of money did you pay for it or not? because i am a owner of a very beautifull saab 9-3 Aero SC from 2002 dark red and fast as hell those are really good car's just because you've bought a used piece of shit that doenst mean that every saab is the same
It's because you have the steering on the wrong side of the car! Only the worst car is sendt to your island, to match the standard of english cars and engines! ;-)
@funkmaster7597 You will go a long way to find a car which is looked after as well as this one... but that doesn't alter the fact the build quality is dreadful.
i got my 9-3 Aero 2.0t Convertible, it is an amazing car, i have had many cars in the saab league and the bmw league. I have seen no problems with it, since then have you had it looked at or fixed?
Sometimes it happens that certain cars give endless trouble.... Mercedes have had this problem with every model they make for the last 15 years and I know 2 people with BMW's that nearly broke their hearts despite being told by mechanics that they are generally bulletproof. You were just unlucky to get a dud.
Mate i had a 04 150bhp 93 vector sport and had none of the problems you've had, I've actually got the new model of the same car and can't complain at all. You sem to have got a reject unfortunately
Ive had 4 Saabs best cars ive ever had, I now bought a 1998 Saab 900 se turbo, I took a gamble buying one of these GM Saabs I hope I dont have these problems, maby you just have a lemon because Saabs are very reliable cars.
You're right... I should have done more research before buying it but as far as comparing a different model, made by a different company and the dealer somehow "tricking" me, you're obviously clueless.
Gearnob came off, Traction Control Failure, Lock System Failure, Front Suspension changed twice - grinding, Ignition Switch Failure = car won't start. All in 3 years.
true, GM wanted to make Saab a Luxury-Brand like Lexus (Toyota) and so they`ve lost most customers cause the´ve lost their individuality. Saab 9.3 SS doesn't look like a Saab anymore
I own a 2001 9-5 and i never had problems like that the sid did go bad at 130,000 but otherwise i love that car my brother has a 2006 9-3 and it seems like it was built cheaper than my 9-5 and it doesnt have the options like mine
there are a few quality issues with the 9-3 and a few cost cutting exersizes, having said that there still awsome looking,quick.. classy motors and are the car that sits between bmw.mercs and the run of the mill, vauxhalls, fords, renaults etc. if you want to by into the last of the reall saabs ,(saabist now what i mean) get a 9-5 aero between 200o and 2005.. not the ugly crap face lift ones...
p.s why did they go minimal dash..thats the best part of a saab the cockpit environment!!
I also have a 9-3 Saab but if anyone would be nice enough i would like to ask a question well here we go the saab is a 2002 year model, well any way why does it not want to idle but it will run as long as u keep your foot on the gas peddle it runs great but just refuses to idle unless i reset the computer then it will idle and the check engine light will illuminate after awhile of driving what could the problem be?,and the only way to trigger the check engine light I would have to give it full...
There was a recall in New Zealand for 2003-2004 Saab 9-3 SportSedan models for the front seatbelt not winding back. Saab replaced them for fee and no more hassle since.
My 2004 9-3 has had no problems. Nothing. its 5 years old now and has around 80,000 miles on it. Your car is either defective or your driving and upkeep are sub-par.
the problem with the recirculation motor is a cheap fix and only takes about 30 minutes to do. sometimes you just have to be smarter than the car. i have an 04 ss and i love it besides having to fix the normal wear and tear parts like brakes and rotors....
im sorry that had to happen to you man, but thats what happens when you let Americans take majority control over such a great car company, just look at the quality of Benz after they where purchased by Chrysler . . . although im very glad the company is going back to Sweden since it has been purchase by koenigsegg
Sorry about all these problems on your 9-3. I think the 9000s were good cars. I had a 87 and a 92 some years ago. If anyone's got an Anniversary, R plate, with about a thousand miles on the clock, for about £100, I'm your buyer, lol.
Audio controls stopped working on steering wheel £218
Drivers seat belt stopped wynding back in £130
Cable to move seat position snapped £86
Diesel pump packed in £1600
I've spoken to people with the same car who have had no problems what so ever and maybe i have bought a "lemon", i really dont want anything more to do with saabs now which i think is a real shame as they are great looking cars!
I have two issues at the moment which needs to be sorted. The clutch is still slipping and for some reason, the ECU keeps re-tuning the car to lower boost after a few weeks. Disconnecting/reconnecting the battery soon sorts that though.
I prefer our model shape to the new model... it looks classy.
dear friend it seams that you messed up the electronics with that parrot system that you put yourself??? dont mess with factory electronics because the mallfunctions will be a chain
I have a 2003 Arc 2.0T and never had one of these problems. You may of got a lemon. The only problem I have that reoccurs is that one of my parking lights goes out every year, must be moisture.
see.......... the reason this kinda stuff happens is because as the years go on GM puts thier dirty hands into Saabs engineering teams. It used to be suttle, but now GM fuks saab in the ass.
But its not like saab sucks or anything.
Saab is basicly the inventor of the turbo essentialy. (they basicly invented turbos that you could use without exploding lol)
i Have a Saab 95 by the way. its great car, i love it in 2nd gear 30-70 mph ;) if you know what i mean. :PPPP
i forgot to add that one of my keys broke, the unlock button wouldn't work, i have to set off the alarm and i was with a bunch of friends, very embarrassing when you can't get into your own car, luckily gm does have a good warranty and will replace pretty much everything, until warranty runs out then your screwed.also my friends sister has my same car and her traction control failed, i hear if this happens just tell gm and they will fix it for free because its a well know trait of saabs
wow i have some of the same problems, i have a 2005 9-3 arc, and it has 22 thousand miles, i have the exact same problem with my air conditioning ha i started laughing when i heard yours cause mines exact same, only other problem that i have that is the same is the shifter knob it always falls off?? and i took it to the dealer and they said they fixed it and i shifted into second leaving the lot and it fell off haha
wow dude!!! your rightt!! i have a 2006 9-3 aero. with almost 60000 miles on it.
shift knob kept falling off-dealer fixed that
mys right left hand drive but the pasenger side keeps squeeking, belts dont reatract sometimes. they just lay there... wow since GM bought saabs over, saabs suck now. also what happens is the door hinge bolts just unscrew themselfs... the fan does make weird noises sometimes...
It's funny I found this video. I have a 2003 93 and I have most of the problems that you have. The ones that I don't have, I'm sure I'll be blessed with sometime within my ownership of the car. It's a great engine, just very poorly built. Maybe we should throw a class action suit at GM. =p Good luck with your SAAB.
The problems you mention are common. The key one is annoying. I was stopped from leaving a car park once because they thought I was stealing the car!
I think you might be unlucky with the in-dash woodpecker but be prepared for the windows to refuse to close properly, temperamental TC and stuff like both the + and - buttons on the volume control to decrease the volume...
Its almost as if Saab engineers have deliberately built in these faults. None threaten your journey, they just piss you off.
Saab have no money and have been purchased by GM who have gutted them a bit and only really invested in their turbocharging expertise.
In a way im not surprised the dealers are so nice because I recon they make all their money from fixing these small problems (which cost them virtually nothing to put right).
The equivalently specced Merc or Beemer is more expensive so I suppose you pays your money...
Yep. The electronic key stops working randomly. The car forgets the code.
There is only a keyhole on the passenger side and you have to prise off the plastic cover to get at it. Once unlocked, the alarm goes off and you have to quickly reassemble the key and put it in the ignition to stop it. On saabs the ignition is where the gear stick is so all this must have looked pretty dodgy on a security camera. They locked the barriers.
No, I know GM bought up SAAB when they started going/ went bankrupt and they just went down the crapper. My ex's brother had a 2000 93 and It has over 100000 miles with almost no problems... Hmm.. if you are also interested google saab 93 reviews. 85 percent of 2003- present reviews have some sort of complaint. GM did a bad job transitioning this vehicle through it's engineering department.
Saabs have turned to absolute garbage not worth their pricetag since the GM takeover. Quality and reliability have dropped significantly. Saabs now aren't even really Saabs. Simple as that. Vauxhaul/Opel is correct.
my 2006 Saab 9-3 was extremely reliable and the few problems I did have were resolved at no cost to me. I absolutely love Saab and truly believe that you got a lemon, which every car company (BMW, Mercedes, etc.) produces once in a while. I just bought a 2008 9-3 Saab Aero and it feels like my 55 thousand $ BMW. I actually prefer my new Saab over my BMW!
You have been unlucky with that car - I hope Saab sort you out.
I do have to wonder though whether this is a piece of truly altruistic reportage, or a means by which to pressure Saab?
I have always found Saab dealers (and Saab UK) to be extremely helpful - above and beyond the call of duty. "I've put a video on YouTube" must rank slightly above "my Mum works on BBC Watchdog" in the list of most frequently heard negotiation techniques, so I wouldn't blame them if they left you to it!
I'm sorry to see you have had so much trouble with your Saab. I own a 2004 9-3 Arc and it has been fairly trouble-free. I enjoy my car a lot and wish you had the same enjoyable experience as I have had!
RIP SAAB 2011 =(

Creaky Dash (bloody common) - 40% comes from the door panels + switches, 5 minute fix by removing panel and adding two washers and some proofing.
Seatbelt retract: Not a MOT fail aslong as still clips in, but easy fix - get Vectra B retracter.
Suspension: You need some new sway bar links - pretty common on all heavy cars - SUPER cheap fix
These cars are great, like you said - the engine is beautiful! Couple of niggles are easy fix and some things sound like a poor last owner

Saab may have been using inferior parts from an old supplier or something.
bignicky88 1 year ago
Learn how to drive you evil bastards! LOL

Ended up trading in for a Honda Accord 2.0 Ivtec .

there are a few quality issues with the 9-3 and a few cost cutting exersizes, having said that there still awsome looking,quick.. classy motors and are the car that sits between bmw.mercs and the run of the mill, vauxhalls, fords, renaults etc. if you want to by into the last of the reall saabs ,(saabist now what i mean) get a 9-5 aero between 200o and 2005.. not the ugly crap face lift ones...
p.s why did they go minimal dash..thats the best part of a saab the cockpit environment!!

I also have a 9-3 Saab but if anyone would be nice enough i would like to ask a question well here we go the saab is a 2002 year model, well any way why does it not want to idle but it will run as long as u keep your foot on the gas peddle it runs great but just refuses to idle unless i reset the computer then it will idle and the check engine light will illuminate after awhile of driving what could the problem be?,and the only way to trigger the check engine light I would have to give it full...

the click is the air recirc servo, it cost about £57 from the dealer.
you have to take the glove box out to exchange the old for the new, basically the servo unit chips a gear tooth and doesn't work properly.
if you want a main dealer to fix it, I was quoted 1.5 hrs to do.

I have two issues at the moment which needs to be sorted. The clutch is still slipping and for some reason, the ECU keeps re-tuning the car to lower boost after a few weeks. Disconnecting/reconnecting the battery soon sorts that though.

how much ?
mayurgai 3 years ago
The problems you mention are common. The key one is annoying. I was stopped from leaving a car park once because they thought I was stealing the car!
I think you might be unlucky with the in-dash woodpecker but be prepared for the windows to refuse to close properly, temperamental TC and stuff like both the + and - buttons on the volume control to decrease the volume...
Its almost as if Saab engineers have deliberately built in these faults. None threaten your journey, they just piss you off.
Energonorama 3 years ago
Saab have no money and have been purchased by GM who have gutted them a bit and only really invested in their turbocharging expertise.
In a way im not surprised the dealers are so nice because I recon they make all their money from fixing these small problems (which cost them virtually nothing to put right).
The equivalently specced Merc or Beemer is more expensive so I suppose you pays your money...
Energonorama 3 years ago
lololthey thought you was stealing the car?lol
zezorb 3 years ago
Energonorama 3 years ago
I got SAAB 9-5 1998, doing fine.
10 years for a car, had problems with airflow, ventilator stoped due a screw fALLEN INTO VENTILATOR. bUT THAT'S IT, NO MOR EPROBLEMS.
I THINK YOU JUST GOT A LEMON
vidvudsm 3 years ago
No, I know GM bought up SAAB when they started going/ went bankrupt and they just went down the crapper. My ex's brother had a 2000 93 and It has over 100000 miles with almost no problems... Hmm.. if you are also interested google saab 93 reviews. 85 percent of 2003- present reviews have some sort of complaint. GM did a bad job transitioning this vehicle through it's engineering department.
fridgelamp 3 years ago

I actually prefer my new Saab over my BMW!
tamu0812415 3 years ago 2
Did you resole the problem?I have the same problem on my SAAB '04.

visionit2007 3 years ago
You have been unlucky with that car - I hope Saab sort you out.
I do have to wonder though whether this is a piece of truly altruistic reportage, or a means by which to pressure Saab?
I have always found Saab dealers (and Saab UK) to be extremely helpful - above and beyond the call of duty. "I've put a video on YouTube" must rank slightly above "my Mum works on BBC Watchdog" in the list of most frequently heard negotiation techniques, so I wouldn't blame them if they left you to it!
