IMO I think kung fu in China was already degenerating even befor Mao & the Cultural Revolution. (With the exception of minor revolts) long peaceful dynasties and the restrictions made by various rulers against civilians training in martial arts brought alot of the degeneration. I would be more interested in martial arts from China's Warring States period.
Most people now do not know what traditional chinese martial arts is, so we do not understand what most of these people are talking about.
"... It's a TOTAL art form... It's a way of life... Studying kungfu is like learning. You will the experience slowly, you will gather the knowledge slowly and you will understand it slowly, then you can achieve greatness" Those who is going through the way, will understand.
Very interesting. I also think that its not totally dead in VR.Its not a secret anymore that true KF survived in Taiwan HK. Macau is not so popular but I think there its survived too. In Indonesia its known as Kuntao. And its interesting that some old school looks ab bit like some Silat.
But Malaysia is completely new to me.
1:05 Globalistion blablabla also meaning a loosing of cultural identity!!!
@rekcufeht due to high chinese population during that time, many chinese fled there. plus outside of china and taiwan, malaysia has the highest chinese population
So true! about the whole "changing/adapting/making it relevant to TODAY"; youngins nowadays need to know it's not all about fighting or beating the shit out of pplz....
What they say in this clip is very true. Today, those who kill kungfu r Chinese youths. They started by saying kungfu can't fight in real life n stick to their useless rascal attitude. Current youths only know how to drive wreckless n bully the weak with no intention to help or care for any1. Very good at being bashed up by real gangsters & robbers
Before releasing your movie you might just as well try to find these people in China. That would be, in my view, the fair thing to do, since then you'd be showing both sides of the story.
This is a very well put videos and I'd love to see the whole material, but I must tell you this:
Traditional martial arts are not dead in China, they are just very, very hard to find. It is my personal view on the subject (based on many years of direct contact with many different kinds of martial arts in China)that traditional martial arts for fighting are ALMOST dead in China, but not totally dead. There are still afew around.
hmmm...my grand father TAN kok tong was a kung fu master in brunei....But real kung fu is still found in HK TAIWAN and china especially in guang zhou and northern areas....true in malaysia there is no government support. havin travelled to all places i have seen that kung fu lives everywhere. why r they showing modern wushu in this preview at times IF UR GONNA TALK TRADITIONAL then show only traditional. but the old guy at the begining rocks and his kung fu looks old school!!!!!
You're right. A year after making this trailer, the feature is finished, the title has changed and the line "traditional arts don't live in China anymore" has been removed.
After 11 years of living in China, i have seen untold evidence that it is not the case. I have found some amazing traditional stylists here in China living their art.
I think the biggest limiting factor in the survival of CMA is not that it is no longer relevant. It is that the people who can pass it on are too conservative.
But it's still a common opinion among overseas Chinese. It's part of the overall culture in Chinese Martial Arts. The opinion is even common in Taiwan (no more traditional arts on the mainland).
To censor the line (most likely to please the PRC and get permission to film in China) gives a distorted picture of the overall picture of Chinese Martial Arts today.
It's like ignoring the differences between Republicans and Democrats.
I don't believe that line needs to be censored too.
It is entirely a misconception. I think if you talk to the right people in Chinese Martial Arts circle they would be happy to prove to the world that it is not true.
True at one point in time the Communists wanted to get rid of all tradition to make way for the new... but they didn't succeed. But the people who fled China don't know that.
@SOLPictures The TRUTH may ruffle some "feathers" (lol) but you shouldn't have backed down on that statement, it was pretty much on the money. Controversy is good business. Reality often shatters peoples preconceived notions. But it's still good you said it.

I agree with this comment.
Also, I suspect that the people in Borneo/Malaysia suggesting that China has lost this cultural heritage have never been to China.
They are just repeating what they have been told by people who fled the Communists.
Visit Cangzhou or Lanzhou or even Beijing and you will see tradition alive and well.

that's not fair to censor that guy! i know of other kung fu masters who feel the same way.
that's their opinion and they are entitled to it.
