Back in Dragon Ball Saiyans hadn't been made up. Goku was just a kid with a tail back then that could transform into a giant ape.

back in the Piccolo Daimao stuff it wasn't made up that he got stronger due to being close to death. That's just something they tacked on later when they made up that Goku was a Saiyan and just happened to possibly work with this.

Back in Dragon Ball Goku just trained just like anyone else to get stronger.

Akira has stated that he didn't plan for Saiyans or Nameks or anything. He just made it up as he went along. Back in Dragon Ball Goku was just a kid with a tail and Piccolo was just a demon.

And how's things after Frieza any worse? Cell was a direct sequel to the Red Ribbon Army basically.

I think this is the first time Goku has ever faced someone he truly could not defeat. Toa was stronger than Goku but not by this much and Goku was able to at least damage Toa.

@onemisterfranko What's more is Piccolo makes sure Goku's dead. He doesn't leave him for dead like most villains would, he actually CHECKS. It's something that's very impressive and quite scary, because if Goku's heart hadn't restarted on it's own he would have definitely been dead.
