  • put dampening systems in the doors and seats duh.

  • I'm pretty sure the bar keeps the door in place better, for those of you wondering why it can't always be there.

  • even better, DONT make cars that do more than the permitted speed limits. why do you need a car that can do 215 mph !??!??!?! you cant do it unless you go to germany on the autobahns which are the only roads that permit this kind of speed. be real guys...

  • Exterior air bags that inflate to slow impact. Instead of more weight to the car. Better yet, all plastic cars with rollcages. The heavier you get the more inertia you have to overcome. This researching is getting ridiculous. Next up a completely wrapped in iron car weighing in at over 17,000 lbs. That will stop all but the other cars wrapped in iron. So then all cars wrapped in etc.etc. And a new steel bar here and putone that a computer activates over there. Oh and how about.

  • I must be missing something important... why not just have the bar in place all the time...?

  • @Techymancer I was thinking the same thing

  • @Techymancer my gues is that it would disturb door function

  • 10cm saving a life? cmon... when was there an accident situation where someone said " only if I had 10cm left...."

  • dickhead... if it only saves your small wiener you would be glad you had one of those systems.

    nerd.

  • the metal is crushing your skull without that, with 10 cm, you would have a *chance* at living.

    It's a great design.

  • something going through your arm 10cm is enough to make you die of blood loss

  • Lol, what if the bar actually stopped someone from getting out, crushing and killing them...

  • so why dont they just leave the bar there .... infact... add 10 more bars...?

  • lol true

  • very good point...maybe the momentum of the bar helps?

  • thats it??? your telling me something as simple as that couldnt have been thought of 10 years ago!?!?!?!?!?!? thats shit

  • they could theoretically make a car "death proof" however it would cost too much and car companies would turn in a profit. it is pretty sick but too...it is usaully only when strict rules and regultaions about car safety and emission standards are put into pracftice is when the car companies comply.

  • A times B times C = X

If X is less than the cost of a recall .. we don't do one.

Which car company do I work for?

    A major one.

The first of Fight Club is .. don't talk about Fight Club

  • you are the man. don't talk about fight club

  • obviously the automobile companies care more about making profit than making good cars. thats why they took the original electric car off the market in the 90s, for example.

  • Buy a hummer

  • for example electric cars in the 90s didnt have enough energy cause of the insufficient accus... could be a reason... aight?

  • i personally think this is still a good idea since making a car of of strong alloy-titanium isnt really feesable option but so cars already have radr and apply brakes for you and even if its only 10cm now whos to same in 10 years time its wont be 20cm????

and the bar would have a probably have a form of deactivaction inside the car if you needed to escape

  • they should just leave mercedes and volvo to do the safety stuff

  • because normal people in civilised countries dont lock their cars when driving around.

also the bar would keep you from opening the door if you are in a different kind of crash and need to get out.

  • Why not just put a metal bar there in stead of the whole fancy system? I mean it will have the same results.

  • Just a test, eventually you may see a different type of system that "deploys" because if it is always there the car wouldn't be drivable.

  • Where is the bar how could a bar in the middle of a car render it un-drivable?

  • Not a bar necessarily, maybe a bubble?

  • LOL! Bubble?! I'll tell ya' we've been working on force fields for a while now, they're not anywhere near ready. =D

  • well maybe not a bubble but like a reverse airbag.

  • Ya, just weild it there, the stupid system would be annoying

  • why can't they place that bar in a normal car?

  • Really dead or just dead. Just put a roll cage in the car.

  • To everyone who thinks: "there could be a bar there the whole time or at least when u shut the door, it would save lots of time and natural resources". It wouldnt seem hi-tec enough for rich people to buy, duh!

  • why not just permanently place the bar there with welds? cheaper, yes, reusable, maybe not, but its less faulty than a computer system, right?

  • it seems like a lot of tech for the sake of 10cm less penetration.

  • why not just leave the bar there to start with?

  • lol exactly !

  • ...are you serious?....pay attention. If the bar was there to start with...you WOULDNT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR.

  • So why not have the bar move into place when the door is locked and retract when the door is unlocked? That's much cheaper than a set of cameras and predicting a crash.

  • I guess for the same reason the US spent millions developing a pen that would work in space and the Russians simply used a pencil.

  • yet a pencil WILL eventually over time staart to fade

  • because alot of people dont drive with doors locked. And if it is in use that much, components in it will wear out, and there is a higher chance of them malfunctioning when they are actually needed.

  • If the bar was there to start with, you wouldnt be able to open the door GENIUS! Look at the video carefully.

  • wow you have some people skills to work on. it's a bad angle I still don't see why the door wouldn't open if it was open...heck I don't even see where it expands. I don't know it just seems like alot of work for 10 centimeters. I guess every centimeter counts but there's got to be a more effective way to take care of this problem

  • dude, 10 cm is long enough to pierce your head, legs and more organs. Inspite of that much tech its not more valuable then your limb to say!

  • why dont any of you just ask them..?

  • You must be kidding.

  • why not just engage the bar at all times? or when the door is closed anyway.

  • I had the same thought and was going to make a similar comment.

    You beat me to it.

  • How does this system differentiate between a car about to hit you and you just getting close to something?

  • good comment, i was thinking exactly the same thing. i want answers!

  • maybe side sensors (just like reverse sensors) and a simple calculation of the speed of the object that's getting closer.

What would suck would be if a cardboard box gets blown by the wind to your door, and then the system acts, You'll get a hole in your car for nothing, but at least it will remain prepared for a crash later

  • It's not making a hole in the door! it's just supporting a bar. Maybe the bar would experience some strain, but as it looks, it's not a one-shot like the airbag

  • it would calculate the speed of an object, therefore calculating an overall prediction on whether the objecdt will cause an impact. It would also consider the size of an object, mass and how fast it could stop (i.e brakes)

  • kind of a waste cause your still gonna get hurt really really bad.

  • Cool idea, save lives.

  • Couldn't the bar be extended *all the time* instead of just before impact? That is to say the car can be strengthened and increase its rigidity by adding various support bars like a roll cage.

  • You could, but the bar extends into the door, so you'd have the end of a metal bar sticking out when you opened it - potentially dangerous when you're climbing out. Also, if the bar gets bent while the door's open, you could end up with a door that can't close.

  • Any mechanism that works the way the bar does in this video will probably fail in real life.

You ever hear the expression keep it simple stupid.

The more you depend on technology the more likely you are adding something that can lead to something failing.

In this case you don't gain anything by the bar being deployed at the moment of impact but you do make it more likely to fail.

  • Well, the video doesn't give enough information to be sure, but I'm fairly certain the system works by putting the car's structure under stress (i.e, actually bracing for an impact). If you had it permanently under stress, you'd drastically shorten the car's service life.

  • I can accept your logic if your premise was correct. However to put the car's structure under stress the metal bars would have to act as one bar and those bars would have to be tied to the rest of the structural components of the car.

  • could the bar not be longer because its only 10 cm more

  • why isn't the bar there all the time?

  • Agreed. This would also save the time, money, and weight of the electronics intended to predict when a crash is going to happen.

  • good point!

  • Wait, "booksbooks", you're agnostic because you haven't seen evolution or god? The hell. Pretty simplistic reasoning, I hope my other agnostic comrades don't just put their label as a badge rather than actually going into a process of discovery.

  • or we can just have those bars there when the car is originally built and scrap all that hardware and cameras and sensors and junk. it's cool tech., but pointless in a car.

  • How about adding an Oh @#$% button too.

  • How about making the driving test more difficult to pass. Then we'd have less retards driving around and we could increase the speed limits!

  • okay how bout we just leave the bars in position at all times??? wuh??

  • then how do you open the doors?

  • 1st u open it in the other way^^

2nd when teh door is so much damaged u must cut teh door with big hydraulic maschines

  • But, see...when there's a big bar going THROUGH the door, it acts like a lock...

  • Okay, um, there's a bar running inside the door; another pops out of the seat and braces against it; there is no locking of any kind.

  • Would you little whiney bitches stop arguing.

Pretty cool technology. I'm a bit surprised it's taken this long to implement though.

  • Safe driving prevent accidents, but when things do happen this will be handy. It would be the difference of losing a limb or not let alone death.

  • very silly

  • Why did they make it more complicated than it needs to be, why not just weld a steel bar to the frames structure in the first place...

  • Now that's a very good question I would like to see an answer to, as well!!!

  • ooh touche

  • How about instead of resolving simple matters with finicky, potentially expensive electronics that have a possibility of malfunctioning when actually needed and just toughen the frame of the car by not being cheap and making the bodies out of plastic? Seriously, why do we insist on using plastic bodies? "OHH! IT IMPROVES GAS MILEAGE CUZ THE CAR IS LIGHTER!" Yeah, you'd have a point if you didn't put a 400+ HORSEPOWER V8 ENGINE IN IT!

That, and plastic is made from petroleum.

  • why isn't the bar just there all the time? why wait till fractions of a second before impact to deploy it?

  • thanh you i was about to say that

  • I would have hoped the car did something more dramatic, but those 10 cm will suffice in the most cases. Yes, the rest of the car crumbles up, but I'd rather have the car absorb the energy, than any human being in it.

  • WTF are you on about?!

and WTF has that little rant got to do with cars?

  • people are talking about religion so i thought i would too...?

  • "people are talking about religion"..

No, just the usual shouty bible bashers trying to ram their insanity down everyones throats again.

  • They are though... but yeah i really don't care about religion or science :/

  • he he.. good luck to you booksbooks, you'll care when you need a doctor.

  • about religion or science? i care about my health... wtf? so are you saying that some figure i can't see, feel or hear is going to make me sick and make me feel good? if your talking about science... i mean i don't care about it like... i don't want things explained to me i think it's cool and all but i don't really want to talk about it.. you know?

  • "i don't really want to talk about it.. "

    well stfu then!

  • Dude why do you not understand what I'm trying to say?! . I'm not interested in science or religion. and stop fucking quoting me it's annoying.

  • well when your mother is choking on her own food and dies because you couldnt be bothered learning shit or listening to others to enable you to perform the correct maneuver to save her life i will laugh at your ignorance, fool.

  • *reply to booksbooks.

  • ps. what has questioning science and faith got to do with anything? you can HOPE or pray that the experiment you are performing works out right but ultimately the laws of physics dictate the final outcome "Boom"

  • i put my faith in science and humanity but with so many douchebags runnin around i dunno....

  • lol 666.. You gotta love youtube, usually it's a head up the backside debate about religion is better than science.

I've gone one better, I've ended up with booksbooks who's arguing about he has no point to make but demands to be heard? lmao.

  • My original point is that I'm agnostic because i haven't seen evolution or god. Once i see one or the other i will believe in either one, if both seem to be true then I'll believe both. But then it turned into me being a stupid person with no life... i had a point i just didn't get it across very well.

  • Everyone has seen evolution. Even creationists. They like to call it "microevolution".

  • Well i guess i don't know what it looks like, and like i said before, i don't really care. Just as long as my friends, family and me are alive and happy

  • Education is very important to me because it's one of if not the most important thing in the world. I don't want a career in any science, i want a career in the arts. Acting, Music, Cooking, etc. Please understand that what i meant to say is like this... i don't care how the car is made i just want the car. I said the wrong thing and i apologize.

  • I laugh at your ignorance, both my mother and father have died to cocaine, alcohol and meth.

And i do know how to save someones life, my aunt runs a family daycare and i HAVE to know how to swim and i had to have 6 hours of medical training same with my cousin.

  • "I really don't care about religion or science"

Pardon me for asking; But WTF are you doing in this thread then? :D

  • this video has nothing to do with Religion and by i don't care about science i mean i don't give a shit how the car is made i just want it.

  • That car still gets OWNED

  • wow this is about science not fucking religion. It's not like this is about cloning damn. just stfu about religion when it doesn't apply to the video.

  • rofl idiots

  • y cant they jus install it from da beginin as a safety feature?

  • well... the thing is, if they could do this, then i think they could move a reenforcement bar from the front of the car, so say... where the impact was. i ono... just thinking why they would make this project haha.

  • HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

  • So I'm an atheist because I don't believe in creationism? Wow, now who's being arrogant!? Also creationists along with other religions do believe death is an entity with a plan, so, not really far of the mark after all. Great joke though.. no really.. ROFLMAO.. yeah.. woo..

  • sorry to bust your bubble but when a video is showing a new life saving piece of technology or other things which have nothing to do with religion, then well.... stfu!! and type "god" or "jesus" into the search bar and argue amongst yourselves on one of those videos.

  • Yes money. That's it, you got me, well holy hell, put that one in the bible you caught me. Money money money, oh and aliens too, oh no, I see - you're implying I'm living for nothing? I'm living for the fun of it dude, get over yourself.

  • don't get me wrong i'm not a die hard jehovah witness/christian but i find it hard to imagine that there is no real reason for humans existing. what about when you die, what do you believe happens nothing, you no longer exist, your memories and personality vanish. i'm not even trying to make you look foolish i might be the fool for believin' but i just can't imagine......not existing as egotistical as it may sound.

  • I have seriously wrestled with what you're talking about, I still do, and I still somewhere want to believe there is some kind of continuation. End of the day no one, as yet, really knows either way. The only beef I have with religion is the creationist angle, everything else is a fair bet in my book.

  • True

  • Yes so lets stop waring seat belts, take out airbags get rid of stop lights and everything else. Cheating death is a figure of speech, death isn't a guy with a plan.. oh wait, you're a creationist aren't you.

  • yeah like in the final destination trilogy

  • Exactly! :)

  • Bahahaha I like this Morning Coffee guy... he seems to be the only one with a sense of humour on this whole website...

  • Hey thanks merrett I really appreciate that, so many people on here are trying so hard to outwit each other and get attention. I enjoy youtube surfing, but most user's should really lighten up. Peace bro.

  • Exactly Arth, why not just always have the bar there? It might be that the bar would stop the door from opening or something...Needs more explanation in the vid

  • thats what i was wondering too

  • haha i thought the same.

  • Why don't they just keep the bar there all the time?

  • Or just factory install complete roll cages :D

  • With all those cameras and computers predicting stuff. That's what we used to call reaching around your ass to scratch your nose. Not the most efficient or obvious solution.

  • I was thinking the same thing

  • lol I was gonna say the exact same thing

  • Nice!
