I've been studying the New Testament lately, but felt impressed to begin a study of the Book of Mormon again. I have never read it with a commentary, and have decided to do so, and so I am delighted that you are doing a BoM commentary series. I am excited to learn from you, and to use your videos as another resource in my studies.
On the first page of the first printing of The Book of Mormon it reads: 'By Joseph Smith, Author and Proprietor,' which in later revisions and printings was changed to read: 'Translated by Joseph Smith, Jun.' Why did Joseph Smith name himself author of the book in the first place? And why did the Church in later printings make that important change?
There is a time.. and a place for everything. I believe that this is not the time.. but it will come and soon. Then will the world be surprised. We will learn of the what was sealed and not given to Joseph to translate. The earth will reveal her secrets and that day is approaching. There is much knowledge yet to be discovered. Remember.. this is the Lords doing and he does it in his time frame.. not ours.
On the "improvement" of the Bible, have you read Clines' article, "What Remains of the Old Testament?" If not, I will email you the PDF to your e-mail address, if you want.
Cline's comment - "The text of the Hebrew Bible is in a state of radical uncertainty. That means that we cannot be sure about any word or phrase in Hebrew Bible texts that we have today that these were the words and phrases of their original author. It is not that the text is sometimes and at some identifiable places corrupt; it is rather that the text should at every point be suspected of being corrupt."
IS ASTONISHING! When Orson Pratt said largely the same thing, he was thrashed.
*was*? He still is! The likes of Ron Rhodes, Bill McKeever and Eric Johnson, and the Tanners (now just Sandra) have continued to trash him! They also fail to cite the name of his tract properly--"The Bible and Tradition: On Their Own, an Insufficient Guide"; they cite it as "The Bible: An Unreliable Guide" to emotionally charge their Sola Scriptura believing audience.
LOL! It's soooooo fascinating that Joseph Smith's understanding (and many of the early Brethren with him) of the Bible is so agreed on today. Talk about insight! This is not to attack the Bible (I have been accused ofthis absurdity), but to accurately assess it, strengths and weaknesses. We simply don't have an infallible text, neither in the Book of Mormon. Nor infallible humans. Biblical scholarship is just so fascinating in this regard, and I will be talking about it inthe commentary.
Just going over this series once more before the new year, thx again for posting it.
