  • 0:29 HELLO, EXACTLY!

  • Dirk and Reed should have contacted Gene Simmons to finance their demo tape like he did with Van Halen LOL

  • " I don't know this industry jargon, YP MP whatever."

  • YA DON'T FUCKIN GET IT, VERN! lol

  • john c. reilly is so brilliant in this scene

  • their record producer looks like guy from pet shop boys

  • "We look like assholes right now!"

  • "WE LOOK LIKE ASSHOLES RIGHT NOW, MAN!!!"

    That's a crazy line. Lmao!

  • 0:32 That's Robert Downey Sr., The father of Iron Man Lol..

  • the magic that is on those tapes! LOL!

  • It's not an MP, it's a YP.

The magic on those tapes are ours.

We look like a-holes right now man. Exec just nods.

    Awesome!

  • You and your little band the bobcats

  • You know what i'm thinking?.. i'm thinking about kicking some fucking ass!!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Its a catch 22

  • I love how Reid says "We look like assholes right now, man!" and the studio manager just looks at him and nods his head. So funny.

  • "But the magic that is on the tapes, that fucking heart and soul that we put into those tapes, that is ours and you don't own that!" I just think of how bad the recording sessions were and it makes me laugh.

  • "I NEED A LAWYER!"

  • Let me explain to him, simple arithmetic 1 2 3...

  • I'LL KICK YA FUCKEN ASS!!!

  • WTF is a catch-22, Burke?

  • "we're guaranteed a record deal, our stuff is that good!" LOL

  • " that's not an MP that's a YP, YOUR PROBLEM ! "

i'll brake out this line every now and then

  • Lets go walk

I dont want to leave this room

    Me either

  • " Ok now you're talking above my head, I don't know all this industry jargon, YP, MP."

  • The bass was too loud in the recordings blocking Dirk's voice. Otherwise, those recordings are gold!!

  • Now you're talking above my head!

    hahaha

  • Still Paul Thomas Anderson's best movie. Robert Downey Sr. is great as the studio manager. And Michael Penn deserves an award just for keeping a straight face as John C. Reilly rants at him.

  • We look like assholes right now, man!

  • @barcelona36 U know what I'm thinking about man, I'm thinking about kicking sum fuckin ass! I need a lawyer! Ur lucky I didn't kick ur fucking azz! LOL

  • Oh wow.... I've actually said that in real life: "I don't wanna leave this room." That was many years ago and many drugs ago...... Don't drink, don't smoke, don't snort, don't pop anymore..... Ain't life grand!

  • Let me explain to him in simple arithematic 1-2-3...

  • john c reilly is god

  • have you heard the tapes?

  • Great how Scotty and that Nick guy are there in the background, sort of mirror images of one another.

  • we look like assholes right now MAN

  • Marky Marks best line in a movie ever "Hello Exactly"

  • If they had'nt spent the rest of the money on cocaine they would have had enough to pay off the recording studio lol..also loving that scene wirh Julianne Moore and Heather Graham coked off their brains lol..

  • The song is: "Compared To What" - Roberta Flack

  • Does anyone know whats the name of the song that is played on this scene? That song it was not included in none of the two soundtrack cds of boogie nights.

    Thanks.

  • the magic on those tapes of me howeling like a dog when a fire engine or cop car passes thats ours have you even hurd them i sound so out of tune and i want that magic

  • that magick...that fucking heart and soul that is on those tapes....you don't own that!

  • The scrawny guy standing in the doorway is Sean Penn's brother. His wife (Aimee Mann) did the soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson's movie Magnolia. (I loved the "Wise Up" montage in that movie.)

  • "THE MAGIC!"

  • 2:16.LOL,He gets into a kung fu stance .

  • I just don't understand the recording studio scene though.

Why would the studio manager NOT want to give them the tapes to get paid? What angle is he playing by not letting them just get the contract and pay him off?

  • because dirk hasnt actualy bin signed to a record company yet...so he wasnt gonna get paid

  • Yeah... because the record company can't hear the tapes.

What the hell is anyone supposed to do?

  • but they wasnt 100% sure they was gonna get signed because their record was crap...

  • then what the hell is the point of hanging onto the tapes if they are worthless?

  • because you have to pay to use a recording studio

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhh

    okay.

I can see the whole argument now.

  • @clustro That was the point. The studio owner knew the only money ANYONE was gonna make on that crap was from Diggler himself....no one else was gonna buy it. Ironically, "The Touch" really wasn't the sound of early 1983.....it's more late '85.

  • Recording time and studio time is very expensive. They needed to pay them their money.

  • Because the manager rents out the studio for cash (probably hourly.) He knows they suck too much to get a record deal. If he rented out the studio to every yuck who thought they were going to make a great album and didn't get paid unless they did, he'd make no money. This way, he gets a steady income even if they suck.

  • Dirk's karate stance is ridiculous...

  • I fucking love this movie.

  • INDUSTRY JARGON!!! hahahahaha

  • "We look like ASSHOLES right now, man"

  • HAHAHA!!!! ;) LOVE THAT!!!

  • Did you guys know that the studio manager is played by Robert Downey Sr. The father of Robert Downey Jr.

  • @soccergoalkeeper1

And "Nick" is a real record producer and brother of Chris and Sean Penn.

  • The Nick dude, he's either supposed to be that dull, or he's a really bad actor, prolly written that way though

  • Nick is played by Michael Penn, a musician who wrote the score for the film.

  • That's a Yp not an MP- that's YOUR problem. Damn it- I am going to start saying that all the time now.

  • yeha I think cutting that part out with Reed's rant was a great Idea, it just doesn't flow in the movie

  • It was an intentional choice by the director. It was written that way. I listened to one of the commentary tracks on the DVD, and PTA said that he wanted John C. Reilly to make Penn laugh. That last deleted scene was intentional, meaning the director never was going to put it in the movie anyway. It was an in-joke among the crew.

  • Don't you guys love it when he says, "I KNOW FUCKEN KARATE!" AWESOME!!! ;)

  • haha at 2:23 "I need a lawyer!"

  • best part of the movie

  • who knew marky mark would turn out to be should a good actor

  • john c reily is well good in this

  • Such a great film! Burt Reynolds is outstanding in it.

  • "i need to take that magic to the record company"

  • We look like assholes right now, man!!

  • our stuff is that good!

  • HELLO EXACTLY!
