In a neon wilderness He was restless Escape loneliness Find a new address Stood before I sink In a neon wilderness Spill my last drink Yeah, he was restless Say good-bye to my new friends Escape from loneliness I found a new address In the last room I hear a boom Someone else's distress In a neon wilderness Someone else's distress In a neon wilderness And I hear a boom In a neon wilderness He was restless Escape loneliness For a new address
I keep listening to this song over again. I think its actually about moving on from something in life, and since my girlfreind dumped me, its all Ive listend too!
For me, this is the high point of the whole LP this song defines the greatness of the verve fluid and well build song Obviously Mc Cabe is a genius and few songs sum up all the solid groove this song contains. Top put it short a truly brilliant and timeless sound, someone further down mentions cobain, morrison Joplin and Hendrix, but none of those acts was in the same league as these guys, Verve is one solid act, there are few like them!
Drugs may have been bad for people but great music came out of the bad. Such examples are Jimi Hendrex, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and many many others. Music and drugs collide and sometimes there are rainbows while other times there are storms. It's just a way to look at the bright side. Many happy songs are hits but more popular songs are sad songs. It's just the way things are and how they are meant to be. Keep it herbal and all will be good. :)
I think the title "Neon Wilderness" is a way to describe modern life. Neon I believe refers to our modern ways of life now with lights everywhere. It is still as wild as before the cities were built on top of the land. Therefore it's a neon wilderness out there.
Stop comparing drugs and music together. Please. It's pointless. You're stoned out of your minds and too retarded at the point you listen to this music to actually understand the deep meaning of this song.
dont be a dick. songs dont have to have a deep meaning, and whether im sober or high this song is brilliant... but saying that people on drugs dont understand this song's "deep meaning"? thats just a dickhead thing to say. I dont think it has a deep meaning, ifyou do thats fine but dont sound like an elitist prick
You're probably stoned out of your mind when you posted this comment, eh? Seriously. Get your fucking head out of the gutter. Drugs are meaningless. They harm you. Why would you want to harm yourself for such a petty thing as a "High"? Can you not find something in your life to give you the same euphoric rush? Something productive? Music, Gaming, Drawing? I'm not being elitist either. I'm speaking the truth.
I'm gonna quote Bill Hicks here,"See I think drugs have done some good things for us. If you don't think drugs have done good things for us then do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all of your records, tapes and all your CD's and burn them. Because, you know all those musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs, man."
And that is the truth. And to understand it, all you need to do is listen.
Trust me, I love acid, and especially weed, and all that, but come on! Don't you get the whole theme? It's about discontent and conflict, internal, and external, and the negativity in modern life.
@mcog2006 perhaps, i take most of the music on northern soul and urban hymns as being less about drugs like the earlier stuff and more about richard channeling his battle with depression into his music, some of it about the struggle like this, others like lucky man etc about staying positive in life

i don't see any drug references in this song. i think it's more a song about going mad(found a new "address").

Gave up drugs long ago but never gave up on this type of music: inspiration, creation, loneliness, alienation all shouting out.

It just reminds me of taking acid and all the colors being really bright in the wilderness.
