The empire was not stable due to infighting and internal politics that Gulab Singh saw his opportunity to become a raja himself and so he did it. The dogras were not the only ones to blamed since many Sikh rajas (Phulkian States: Patiala, Nabha, Faridkot and Jind) joined the British against Maharaja Ranjit Singh's kingdom.

Although the Sikhs did play a major role in the independence movement of India, there is no need to downplay the sacrifice of others. 80% of those martyred were not Sikhs. When you take into account the lives lost in Assam, Bihar and Bengal and countless other places. And the Sikhs were also famous in helping to crush the 1857 revolt. So be careful about what you claim.
The Sikhs have a very honorable and respected place in India's history for their sacrifice.
