Farrokh Bulsara..perfect voice, classically trained on the piano, songwriter, designed Queens logo...collector of Japanese art..Beautiful,shy sweet and yes ..sexy... part of something so perfect. Brian May Guitar Master Brilliant song writter, Roger Taylor great on drums and that falsetto John Deacon wrote some of Queen's most memorible songs and amazing bass player.. I miss your presence Freddie Mercury..I admire how you lived...and died on your termsGlad I got to see Queen LIVE
I think it's funny that if any other band had written this song it'd be one of their best songs, but for queen it's just a fun little ditty. That just shows how many awesome songs queen has conceved.
was he really gay or just frontin like he was gay? he cut his hair later and grew a manstache and looked straight. I think this was an act and when he saw no one bought it hewent straight again
@impellernut Freddie was always flamboyant:-), if anything the moustache made him look more 'gay'. Haha. However Freddie was a bisexual. He had a girlfriend for about 5-6 years:-) They remained great friends until the day he died.
Norman something, I think Sheffield. He [Norma] brought a lawsuit against Freddie but EMI, freddie's record company, settled it out of court with money. Somewhere's in 1.5 mill or something like that. I have to look it up in my books
My ears are having the most exquisite orgasm!!! This song is utterly perfect in every way. Freddie sounds amazing. I love his compositions and he was a brilliant pianist!

Dude. Ed was a player, not a luthier. I've refretted guitars. I know what I'm telling you is right. If I was unsure at all, I'd qualify my statements. A guitar with a properly placed nut, properly placed frets and properly set intonation will play in tune at each point on the neck but NOTHING you can do will compensate for the equal tempered tuning which is what is causing the B string (or maj 3rd on ANY string) to sound too sharp. Detune it and you are out ref other intervals.
"A guitar is just theoretically built wrong. Each string is an interval of fourths, and then the B string is off. Theoretically, that's not right. If you tune an open E chord in the first position and it's perfectly in tune, and then you hit a barre chord an octave higher, it's out of tune. The B string is always a motherfucker to keep in tune all the time! So I have to retune for certain songs."
@archelonprime I assure you it was very highly rated certainly at that time. It might have been underplayed on the radio compared to their other songs but it was a live favorite.

wow. rare mistake by May at the end where they transposed it up a half step. Not often you see a big blunder like that but he slid up to the the 5th at the end instead of that flat 5 he was on. hehehe
i believe after playing that riff through out the whole song, and playing guitar his whole life, that he knew the fret he was playing on wasnt going to sound the same.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually, Brian did make a big blunder and your comment shows how little you know about music. Transposing means that you play everything up one or more frets and any musician would agree with me that he lost his place at that moment.
THIS COMMENT shows how little YOU know about music, but think ure an expert. You can clearly hear the bass and piano are in the same key, which means that Brian didn't make a mistake, they played the riff half a step higher than usually to make it sound more interesting and then again ended with the same key that they started with. Come back when uve learnt something and stop pretending to know a shit
"THIS COMMENT shows how little YOU know about music, but think ure an expert."
Every high school dropout starts his or her emotional rant against the informed critic this way. YOUR comment is a flag that tells me that what's to follow will be written at the 6th grade level and completely devoid of any useful information or counter argumentation. You merely say "You're WRONG!" and flail your arms about wildly.
and just to drive home my point, here are a couple of easy music questions you have no clue about.
1) Modern music uses an equally tempered scale (you knew that) but what is the ratio from one note to the next? You may answer using either decimal, fractional or exponential format. Just give the right answer.
2) What are the intervals of a harmonic minor scale and what is the 7th note in a C harmonic minor scale?
3) From what Queen album can we derive the beginnings of Bohemian Rhapsody? Bonus points if you name the song.
4) What "trick" did Eddie VH use on most of his songs to make his guitar sound better regarding his tuning? Hint: it involved the problem induced by the equal tempered major 3rd.
I'll stop here. Let's find out how much YOU know about music. I will rip your shit.
3) If I understood ur point (which has nothing to do with basic musical knowledge) Queen 2
4) Not a big fan of VH. And btw, I believe it was not one of the answers I have been learning while studying music. So please, musical knowledge? Here's a question for you: Angus Young was born in 1955, but a lot of people thought he was born another year, since it says so on some sites. Which year? musical knowledge?haha, owned, and im 30 years younger
Well, I'm impressed. I'll give you #2 even though you didn't list the intervals (eg, whole, half, whole, whole, half, step and a half, half).
#3. Correct. You can actually hear hints of the ending of Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of March of the Black Queen. Almost same exact feel. Not to mention the overall epic structure of both songs.
#4 EVH detuned his B and E strings (last 2 strings) in order to create a perfect major 3rd (G and B strings played together) to get a smoother sound.
I read one of the comments, and it seemed you were trying really hard to make the guy know he was wrong. There was a mistake and you are right. Obviously that guy knew he was wrong by the end, and just couldn't accept it.
See, I'm 46 and have done some good stuff w/music, guitar, painting, writing, etc. and have a degree in computer science and I know a FEW things and there are people out there who do not know anything and they can't even see it when shown. I've refretted a couple guitars. Has he? Played on other people's CDs. Has he? I got no answer to my intonation question. Pretty simple. Oh well!
@Gregsynth I'm pretty sure it's both on at least some songs. 2:27 into Running with the Devil, listen to the last two notes of the harmonic sequence (it's the open B string at the 5th fret and open E at the 5th fret) both notes are slightly flat. There you go.
Van Halen developed a technique of flattening his B string slightly so that the interval between the open G and B reaches a justly intonated, beatless third. This consonant third was almost unheard of in distorted-guitar rock and allowed Van Halen to use major chords in a way that mixed classic hard rock power with "happy" pop. The effect is pronounced on songs such as "Runnin' With the Devil", "Unchained", and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?"
@Gregsynth Pretty much ANY tune he played where he used the A string major bar chord used the detuned B and I know for a fact his bottom E was tuned in tune with the detuned B. This is why sometimes his last string sounds flat in some songs. But wiki is correct. They just aren't giving you the E string part because it isn't directly related to the detuning of the B to acheive a smoother sounding chord on the D, G and B strings. Brian May has done this: We Will Rock You anyone?
The detuning of the strings kinda reminds me of a person who uses analog synthesizers: They detune certain notes to form variations of notes, chords, and sounds.
#1 you didn't get. The actual ratio from one note to the next (piano, guitar, doesn't matter) is..... the twelfth root of two. Or iow, 2 to the 1/12 power. Or, worked out in decimal... 1.05946309435929526456 (etc). Take the actual frequency of any musical note (say A at 440Hz) and multiply it by the above number and you will get the note just above it, in this case (A#).
The year Angus was born has nothing to do whatsoever with musical knowledge. My questions did. But I'll admit I don't know that one and just take a stab from looking it up on wikipedia. March 31, 1955.
Now, back to music. Here's a guitar setup stumper for ya. My new guitar I bought plays in tune open and at the 12th fret but if I press a string anywhere else it's sharper toward the first fret and flat the further I go up from the 12th fret. What's the problem and how can I fix it?
queen was my first rock concert right after WE Will Rock You came out. Madison square garden in early december 1977...oh god am i getting old! they did "jumping jack flash" for their encore.
you could fill the garden at $500 a seat just to watch queen videos

This is a difficult song to pull off live. Freddie had incredible talent. Too bad his sexual encounters were not smart choices or he would still be with us :(
I bought a night at the opera last summer because i was told it was brilliant. and this song sealed the deal for me the second i heard that piano come in. after less than 5 months i already own all of queen's first 6 albums and love them all.
you sucking my blood like a leech!!! ... a song for their old label!!! Freddie mercury...Not on earth anymore because heaven needs him as GOD again!!! Queen 4-ever!!
Taylor and Deacon are every bit as good as Bonham/Jones, Baker/Bruce, or any other rhythm section...Queen was so clean in concert though, and that comes down to May and Freddie being better live than other guitar/vocal pairings. Queen, Genesis and Tull were the more consummate performers of the era...while other bands were just not as polished live. Yes was good live too, but they are not the performers that a Freddie, Ian Andersen or Gabriel were.
Excuse me but I beg to differ as a hardcore Yes fan & seeing them 3 times over the course of their career I can say that they were exceptionally great live - As for Queen I only saw them once & they are a different style of music then Yes & Genesis!
Yes couldn't be a bigger snore fest live. Yes is a talented band, but Queen puts on a show! Genesis entertains as well, but Yes, just put on a CD in your house and leave it at that. To compare Yes to the antics of Andersen, Mercury and Gabriel is just irrational.
Well it's obvious that you think you know it all so I won't waste my time here - Queen is a completely different style of music then Yes & I'm sure fans will agree with me so to compare the two is just fucking retarded! It's funny you mention Genesis because they were accused of being a complete snooze fest in Rolling Stone magazine during their time with Peter Gabriel - I have never heard Yes get any bad reviews like that about their shows over the years - snorefest????
Ogre, you are trolling pretty bad here. Pipe down and accept that Queen blows away Yes in STAGE PERFORMANCE. Yes, just stood there and played, Freddie PERFORMS. I have seen all of these bands. I have played bass for 25 years, I am 39, and I don't think it's a competition between rhythm sections. Zep is based on free jamming blues rock, Queen is a more technical written composition. Did you even know that Queen songs were "composed" in the traditional method. Rolling Stone? Who cares?
Yeah ok whatever you say guru - I saw all of these bands before you I might add in their prime also... I never said Queen sucked or were bad - & if Yes just stood there & were boring you paid to see them supposedly so what are you talking about! Who cares if you play bass! Oh I see - I get it now You play bass & of course nobody can tell you shit about music right! One of those I see.. The fact that you play bass is that supposed to mean something to me? All bands perform - freddie performs???
Quite the wordsmith ogre. Since you have yet to grasp my point after three posts: Freddie "Performs" in the sense of a Broadway production, with flair, poise, and artistry. You asked ME my age, then say why should you listen. That's odd. Thankfully, my son at 11 yrs. old already plays 3 instruments and can appreciate insight gained from those that have experience. You just intend to troll, and disagree as much as you can when someone states their opinion. No sweat off my ass.
What is this crap about your son & your family history lesson who the hell cares about you or your son I'm talkinga about your ridiculous comparisons that you made & here you are completely changing gears & getting off the topic - this is a comical routine I see!
Ogre, your a sad case, really. You do not converse to share ideas and learn, you take the antagonist role, and that role only. I have had more insightful banter with autistic children. Enjoy your day.

Learn - Oh is that what you think your doing trying to teach me something - I don't recall asking you to teach me anything you arrogant scumbag... I don't need your lessons on music who the hell are you? Just proved my point again just another self absorbed musician who tries to play the role of teacher! Trading insults in a suttle way makes you so much more of a class act - go to hell you complete phoney!
"Gumborific" - comparing a Queen show to Yes wow now there's what I call a comparison.... Are you kidding me... Gee what a rocket scientist you are.......... Next up why don't you compare Black Sabbath to Seals & Croft!!!
Queen and Yes are a lot closer than Sabbath and Seals & Croft. Nice attempt there ogre, but that statement is as ludicrous as your arguments. Now Sabbath to Maiden would be a similar argument, where I would consider Sabbath the more innovative band, and Maiden the more showy stage experience. Now we are both trolling! LOL
yeah yeah yeah - just like I said a self absorbed musician who thinks he knows better then the "average" fan or music lover! Save it buddy your not the first so called musician I've come across with this garbage routine & you certainly won't be the last... But if it makes you feel superior & gets your rocks off then continue to kncok yourself out with your fanatastic comparisons & lame jokes!
Do you ever come out ahead in these arguments with people who are vastly more talented and wise than you, or do you just prove that you are a cretin and a dolt, as you have done so well here in this forum?
You said you were bored like 5 posts ago Tomas. Then act like it, or does your tiny penis shrivel up even smaller to think you will not get the last word? So, I guess if you post a response you will be would answering that question.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hold on a sec - ahahahahahahahahahah - hey it's the "gumborific" comedy hour! IT's the shriveled up "penis" joke folks - that's a classic "gumjoborific"
Guess you answered that question. Well done Mr. "my name is a song followed by 5 numbers". Very original. Do you have a brother named Rambleon45678? Still stands that as "performers" go, Freddie pisses on Yes. You did nothing to disprove that in any of your arguments. How can he not wearing an open chested leotard? So what are you wearing ogre?
Okay, I thought you stopped, but I will respond since you asked a question. I do not think Lizzy and Queen are similar. Zep yes, but only on Queen's first two albums. I have played quite a bit of all three bands and I say AGAIN Queen is "composed" music, like you would write pieces for an orchestra. Do you grasp that at least? Lizzy is balls to the wall straight out rock and roll. I love them too! Phil has always inspired me. Hard for me to name a better performer than him, really.
Of course you wouldn't think they were the same - that wouldn't give you anything to argue about then! Thin Lizzy & Queen's shows are actually very similar in intensity & rock n roll, but of course you wouldn't see any comparisons whatsoever would you.. I think we're done here! No that's ok I'll pass on viewing your page!
song is about their first record label that robbed them for millions. they were touring and had top hits, but were so broke, they lived in tiny efficiency apartments except one of them had a 1 bed. queen has been and always will be my favorite band, we all miss you Freddie, and you are truly a LEGEND!!

TruthSurge 2 years ago
2) Distance between the nots in the scale. B
Which year? musical knowledge?haha, owned, and im 30 years younger
b0nsc0ttr0ck 2 years ago
Well, I'm impressed. I'll give you #2 even though you didn't list the intervals (eg, whole, half, whole, whole, half, step and a half, half).
#3. Correct. You can actually hear hints of the ending of Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of March of the Black Queen. Almost same exact feel. Not to mention the overall epic structure of both songs.
#4 EVH detuned his B and E strings (last 2 strings) in order to create a perfect major 3rd (G and B strings played together) to get a smoother sound.

I'm confused what this whole conversation was about? Explain if you would like.
Boganator4 2 years ago
I claimed Brian made a mistake. A dimwitted twit said he didn't. 30 years of guitar and most professionally, I think I have a clue.
TruthSurge 2 years ago
I read one of the comments, and it seemed you were trying really hard to make the guy know he was wrong. There was a mistake and you are right. Obviously that guy knew he was wrong by the end, and just couldn't accept it.
Boganator4 2 years ago
See, I'm 46 and have done some good stuff w/music, guitar, painting, writing, etc. and have a degree in computer science and I know a FEW things and there are people out there who do not know anything and they can't even see it when shown. I've refretted a couple guitars. Has he? Played on other people's CDs. Has he? I got no answer to my intonation question. Pretty simple. Oh well!
TruthSurge 2 years ago
I thought EVH only detuned his B string slightly? Guess it's 2 strings now!
Gregsynth 2 years ago
@Gregsynth I'm pretty sure it's both on at least some songs. 2:27 into Running with the Devil, listen to the last two notes of the harmonic sequence (it's the open B string at the 5th fret and open E at the 5th fret) both notes are slightly flat. There you go.
TruthSurge 2 years ago
From Wikipedia:
Van Halen developed a technique of flattening his B string slightly so that the interval between the open G and B reaches a justly intonated, beatless third. This consonant third was almost unheard of in distorted-guitar rock and allowed Van Halen to use major chords in a way that mixed classic hard rock power with "happy" pop. The effect is pronounced on songs such as "Runnin' With the Devil", "Unchained", and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?"
It's also on 2 other songs.
Gregsynth 2 years ago
@Gregsynth Pretty much ANY tune he played where he used the A string major bar chord used the detuned B and I know for a fact his bottom E was tuned in tune with the detuned B. This is why sometimes his last string sounds flat in some songs. But wiki is correct. They just aren't giving you the E string part because it isn't directly related to the detuning of the B to acheive a smoother sounding chord on the D, G and B strings. Brian May has done this: We Will Rock You anyone?
TruthSurge 2 years ago
The detuning of the strings kinda reminds me of a person who uses analog synthesizers: They detune certain notes to form variations of notes, chords, and sounds.
So this is how EVH's tuning is?
E: Slightly de-tuned
A: In Tune
D: In Tune
G: In Tune
B: Slightly de-tuned
E: In Tune
Gregsynth 2 years ago
#1 you didn't get. The actual ratio from one note to the next (piano, guitar, doesn't matter) is..... the twelfth root of two. Or iow, 2 to the 1/12 power. Or, worked out in decimal... 1.05946309435929526456 (etc). Take the actual frequency of any musical note (say A at 440Hz) and multiply it by the above number and you will get the note just above it, in this case (A#).
TruthSurge 2 years ago
The year Angus was born has nothing to do whatsoever with musical knowledge. My questions did. But I'll admit I don't know that one and just take a stab from looking it up on wikipedia. March 31, 1955.
Now, back to music. Here's a guitar setup stumper for ya. My new guitar I bought plays in tune open and at the 12th fret but if I press a string anywhere else it's sharper toward the first fret and flat the further I go up from the 12th fret. What's the problem and how can I fix it?

This is a difficult song to pull off live. Freddie had incredible talent. Too bad his sexual encounters were not smart choices or he would still be with us :(

Of course nobody ever seems to mention Taylor and Deacon. Without a killer rhythm section there is no Queen
whitco27 3 years ago 8
Taylor and Deacon are every bit as good as Bonham/Jones, Baker/Bruce, or any other rhythm section...Queen was so clean in concert though, and that comes down to May and Freddie being better live than other guitar/vocal pairings. Queen, Genesis and Tull were the more consummate performers of the era...while other bands were just not as polished live. Yes was good live too, but they are not the performers that a Freddie, Ian Andersen or Gabriel were.
gumborific 3 years ago
Excuse me but I beg to differ as a hardcore Yes fan & seeing them 3 times over the course of their career I can say that they were exceptionally great live - As for Queen I only saw them once & they are a different style of music then Yes & Genesis!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Yes couldn't be a bigger snore fest live. Yes is a talented band, but Queen puts on a show! Genesis entertains as well, but Yes, just put on a CD in your house and leave it at that. To compare Yes to the antics of Andersen, Mercury and Gabriel is just irrational.
gumborific 3 years ago
Well it's obvious that you think you know it all so I won't waste my time here - Queen is a completely different style of music then Yes & I'm sure fans will agree with me so to compare the two is just fucking retarded! It's funny you mention Genesis because they were accused of being a complete snooze fest in Rolling Stone magazine during their time with Peter Gabriel - I have never heard Yes get any bad reviews like that about their shows over the years - snorefest????
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Ogre, you are trolling pretty bad here. Pipe down and accept that Queen blows away Yes in STAGE PERFORMANCE. Yes, just stood there and played, Freddie PERFORMS. I have seen all of these bands. I have played bass for 25 years, I am 39, and I don't think it's a competition between rhythm sections. Zep is based on free jamming blues rock, Queen is a more technical written composition. Did you even know that Queen songs were "composed" in the traditional method. Rolling Stone? Who cares?
gumborific 3 years ago
Yeah ok whatever you say guru - I saw all of these bands before you I might add in their prime also... I never said Queen sucked or were bad - & if Yes just stood there & were boring you paid to see them supposedly so what are you talking about! Who cares if you play bass! Oh I see - I get it now You play bass & of course nobody can tell you shit about music right! One of those I see.. The fact that you play bass is that supposed to mean something to me? All bands perform - freddie performs???
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Quite the wordsmith ogre. Since you have yet to grasp my point after three posts: Freddie "Performs" in the sense of a Broadway production, with flair, poise, and artistry. You asked ME my age, then say why should you listen. That's odd. Thankfully, my son at 11 yrs. old already plays 3 instruments and can appreciate insight gained from those that have experience. You just intend to troll, and disagree as much as you can when someone states their opinion. No sweat off my ass.
gumborific 3 years ago
yeah well you can continue playing these word games if you want to but it's getting boring now!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago

Trading insults in a suttle way makes you so much more of a class act - go to hell you complete phoney!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Trolling around??? Yeah that's real funny
"Gumborific" - comparing a Queen show to Yes wow now there's what I call a comparison.... Are you kidding me... Gee what a rocket scientist you are.......... Next up why don't you compare Black Sabbath to Seals & Croft!!!
Thank you for sharing that with all of us!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Queen and Yes are a lot closer than Sabbath and Seals & Croft. Nice attempt there ogre, but that statement is as ludicrous as your arguments. Now Sabbath to Maiden would be a similar argument, where I would consider Sabbath the more innovative band, and Maiden the more showy stage experience. Now we are both trolling! LOL
gumborific 3 years ago
yeah yeah yeah - just like I said a self absorbed musician who thinks he knows better then the "average" fan or music lover! Save it buddy your not the first so called musician I've come across with this garbage routine & you certainly won't be the last... But if it makes you feel superior & gets your rocks off then continue to kncok yourself out with your fanatastic comparisons & lame jokes!

So what are you wearing ogre?

ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
I'll take my chances. He doesn't get his panties in a bunch when people have a different opinion than his. It's a start.
So Freddie PISSES ON YES.
It's been decided here folks!!!
gumborific 3 years ago
So your admitting they are not quite the same then... so then what's with the comparisons?
Choose a band like Zeppelin or Thin Lizzy that are closer to Queens style - instead of your ridiculous comparison of Queen & Yes!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
Okay, I thought you stopped, but I will respond since you asked a question. I do not think Lizzy and Queen are similar. Zep yes, but only on Queen's first two albums. I have played quite a bit of all three bands and I say AGAIN Queen is "composed" music, like you would write pieces for an orchestra. Do you grasp that at least? Lizzy is balls to the wall straight out rock and roll. I love them too! Phil has always inspired me. Hard for me to name a better performer than him, really.
gumborific 3 years ago
Of course you wouldn't think they were the same - that wouldn't give you anything to argue about then! Thin Lizzy & Queen's shows are actually very similar in intensity & rock n roll, but of course you wouldn't see any comparisons whatsoever would you.. I think we're done here! No that's ok I'll pass on viewing your page!
ogrebattle22763 3 years ago
