@theachtungtree Nobody said " Hard Rock " They said " Heavy Metal " GFRs Paranoid was the birth of HEAVY METAL , Also " Sins a Good Mans Brother " ,,,,, GFR also intoduced " Grundge " { see inside looking out , 1969 }.
Is it me, or does Dee Snider sound unusually... silly? He's a relatively smart guy, but he comes across like a fifteen year old fanboy, who doesn't really know what he's talking about, as opposed to everyone else interviewed here who present a far more knowledgable look at how the genre developed from what came before.
Great! Greetings from France! I am 53 and American and my husband is French and 43. What a mix! Check out cute cat faith dot com! Thank you for posting!
Grand funk railroad sold out shea stadium faster than the beatles. Hendrix was way ahead of his time. Acid/hard rock for sure. I loved deep purple-child in time and strange kind of women were my favs on made in japan.
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
I'm a big fan of Grand Funk. I always thought they are in the origins of Hard Rock and Metal, but I agree 300% with pinwizz69 : MC5, the Stooges are equal in paternity of this genre. I agree too with toboulore : when you speak of Heavy M today, people think this genre was born in 1980 with Iron Maiden and don't know about it. For me, Link Wray, the Kinks, etc.. were Hard Rock too.
I,m a big G.R. fan since the 60s. G.R. was a class by themselvs and not just H.M. The first Metal was MC5 in 1967 and the term was coined by a Detroit D.J. who told a critic from the Detroit Free Press. He said" We can,t play their music on the radio cause its so heavy with swear words, Its heavy metal!" Get their cd Kick Out The Jams and read the liner notes.Pisses me off they get no credit yet all ya gotta do is listen to it and you,ll know its true.
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!
acerb; your logic is flawed if you believe Led Zep was heavy metal. GFR kicked the shit out of them and your modern "Final thought -bottom" are boot lickers that have the advantage of modern sound. GFR today would destory them and today's chicks would be the 1st to know it!!!
yea..but today's metal lakcs of raw energy man....back then they had heavy sound just turning their amps to 10,a simple overdrive and their soul and heart....not tons of technology supporting their big ass sound, like today...
Actually, the term "heavy metal" was first applied to music by Mike Saunders in the November 12th, 1970 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. He was describing the Humble Pie album "As Safe As Yesterday Is". This is well documented, and lots of bands (Blue Cheer, Vanilla Fudge, Cream, Spooky Tooth, Zeppelin) as well as Grand Funk could easily be described as the original prototype for heavy metal music. There's no way to single one band out to give absolute credit with the beginning.
@DEATHBYKILLED Could be, I remember back in that day they called GFR ZEP, Sabbath, DP etc., White Noise and Then the term Heavy Metal came about, and I remember the members of Zep saying NO! we are a blues band, we are not heavy metal like GFR.

hmmmm? I like to start shit? no i side with someone who stats their opinion because it is THEIR thought not everyone elses. At least he didnt say GFRxR sucks and that Soldier boy is better or something...
Of course then came the whole Metallica -Megadeth-Slayer influenced scene, and in the last 10 or so years Metal fans among the kids have basically split into 3 major camps: the System of a Down, Godsmack, Disturbed type, so-called nu-metal fans, the Black/Power Metal from Scandinavia fans into Emporor, In Flames, Children of Bodom, and Extreme Metal fans into Slipknot, Mudvayne, etc.Because of Maiden's popularity today it's like they're the greatest common denominator of influence in Metal today
Yeah sure there were some songs like Communication.. from Zep that had driving rhythm with screaming solo and aggressive vocals, but all of those type of pieces before Purp were based on Blues and English Folk. It was Purp who 1st introduced Classical, Folk from around the world, even Jazz, and mixed it all with the Blues creating the Metal sound so many bands strove for until the advent of Iron Maiden who took it a step further in the Euro Folk and Classical direction fusing it with punk 'tude
The truth hurts, yeah, Zep's always been overrated because of payola from Atlantic to d.j.'s (remember the scandal). Yeah some of there songs were/are heavy, but it wasn't Metal until Deep Purple (under the leadership of Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord wanted to play more Acid Rock at 1st until Ritchie made him see the light in 1970) combined the Hard Rock of Zep, early Sab (who went in a Metal direction as well by the mid 70's),Hendrix,
and GFR with Classical influences, screaming solos and vocals.
PackedFunk, they TOLD you that GFR was NOT a big influence on musicians? Seriously? They told you this?! Even with all the facts right in their face?! Did you get the address of who told you this so I can pay a nice little visit?! Bastards man! Bastards!

Will Mr. Railroad please come foward? Thats Mr. Grand Funk Railroad who was born at a Grand Funk concert back in 1969 and named Grand Funk Railroad. Mr. Railroad...are you there? Please acknowledge Mr. Railroad. Can you hear me? Mr. Railroad?
Dee is one hell of a nice guy,his whole band was.I spent a lot of time with him in Europe when we did out door summer fest.Motorhead is a trip.Their drummer Animal and myself got so shitfaced one night. But the Funk will always prevail.Long live the Funk.
GFR were number one in America and, for me a that time, in my country Italy. Mel was a damned good musician and the drumming guaranteed to send you up to the wall...Mark Farner was the leader and this was the chemistry of the real hard rock (not heavy) sound of the '70s. They deserve to be in RnR Hall of Fame because of the real fame they had. The people's band, forever in my ears & in my heart
Grand Funk Railroad never fit the preconceived mold of the music industry's definition of a rock band. They were blasted by music critics and the music press. But in the end when they were number 1. It proved that no one cared about the critics or the press and that was hard for establishment to accept. To this day they down play the greatest American Power Trio in spite. Help us correct this by signing the petition in this video's description.
Surprised to hear Led Zepplin referred to as the 1st Heavy Metal Band! Love Zepplin, guess I Loved Metal. Hahaha!
