DAVE WEINER, i want to thank you, and let you know that your videos have helped me soo much, you're the BEST teacher in the world dude, like seriously dude props.
hey dave, great videos. im still not clear with this. so when making melodies, we can use any scale or chords to make the melody? for example: we can make a melody out of the C dorian scale or the songs chord progression?
I disagree on that last part. With that point of view we should first master a diddley bow that has only one string, then pass to an instrument of 2 strings and so on.
If you start learning guitar with a 7 strings and get it into your system early it can be very beneficial
You know after you said that thing about being in Vai's band, I instantly recognized you!
It's sad that I never see you playing solos in Vai's band, you are a great soloist, but that doesn't mean you don't, I just don't see very very many Vai videos.
now this is something that guitar teachers normally dont emphasize on but keep stressing on playing scales up and down.soloing is about breaking that and combining bits and pieces of diff scales, arps, techniques and creativity.its not that simple.great video-expect more in depth of melodic soloing approaches
FULLY informative, as always. You're not just a wicked musician, but a kickass instructor! Give me some business cards, I'm going to start pimping you out before you set up the full site. When are the DVD's coming out?
I really like these lessons. Your production quality just keeps getting better and better. One suggestion though, I think your vids would be even better if you were to record the audio (at least the music anyway...) direct to the computer. A lot of the backing tracks are hard to hear. If you could mix the audio from the camera, your guitar and the backing tracks accordingly... a good thing just got better. Thanks for sharing!
Oh man, i just realized i tend to play very scalar in my soloing. It became a habit of inserting/superimposing 'outside' notes that the notes in my head are actually scalar'ish...Dave i feel that lots of fusion players tend to do that? Does that mean its wrong or should we try and avoid that? Thx much...
I dont necessarily think so, it depends on the sound.. it really does not matter what scales etc you use as long as the SOUND is good. OF course if you play the scale up and down, again and again it might get a little trivial after a while ;)
I really don't think there is a right or wrong in music, but maybe more appropriate and less appropriate..
another thing that i do to break up the "scalaring":) you are talking about is to use the different voices of the same chord up the neck in a strumming rhythm and then back to scale at whatever position you are at. Hope that made sense.
Every lesson in amazing!!! You've solved a problem I had composing my songs, thanks. Can't wait for the new web page!!!! I wish I had a camera to record my responses!!!!!! Best wishes for the next season!!!
Handy trick someone gave me once upon a time. Find the two major chords in your progression that are a whole step apart, and you can find the key. In this case, the variations of F and G are the major chords 1 step apart. Because of the triad formula( M-m-m-M-M-m-d), they have to be the 4th and 5th notes/chords of the scale. So, if F & G are the 4th and 5th, we can derive the rest of the major scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C). So, we're in the key of C, which is why the A minor mode works perfectly.
wicked as ever, one lesson that would be great to see if you could cover is to see is how you harmonize the major scale to help create the modal chord arrangements to fit the different modes available, if that makes sense, (fear of sounding like ive just got that all wrong haha) cheers.
can you make a lesson how to record you're guitar to the computer by showing recordings with mics. and showing all the things you'll need like preamps and interfaces please? thanks keep the rotw's coming

How come you play a 7 string guitar?? I don't think I've seen you use that extra string yet...so...what for? lol Just curious
xXAvatarofGuitarXx 2 years ago
I use it plenty for my own music and for playing in Vai's band. I don't use it much for ROTW b/c 99% of ROTW viewers can't relate to it.
Plus, if you don't have 6 strings down yet, you shouldn't bother with 7.
