3 of 3: Okay, I lied. I get the feel that back in the 60s Anderson had free reign with his plots and characters, so long as it came in within budget and was ready on time. With a modern feature film, there are more people involved; producers, marketing, liscencing, etc, who would have affected the making of the film.

My view is that someone said, as its a family movie, we have to make the main characters, cos that's who kids identify with. They should have adopted a more adult sensibility.

2 of 2: What made Anderson's series [Captain Scarlet[s], UFO, etc] great was that they were adult stories with adult characters; it didn't talk down to its younger audience. And while some of the plots were overly simplistic, they tended not to sugar coat it for the kids. And while noone ever died [on screen anyway], characters were put in genuine peril.

And while that's retained by the movie, it mixes it with slapstick humour and a generic teen-coming-of-age story, which doesn't quite work

1 of 2: Looking back, I think this movie wasn't all that bad. All the right ingredients were there, there were just a few problems with the recipe.

Putting aside the fact that Gerry Anderson wasn't involved [fair enough, he sold the rights, the studio had no obligation to him], I think the main problem was that it aimed it to too young an audience.

@siraustin1 The original series isn't specifically for kids - it's meant for people of all ages. The fact that kids in particular grew to like it so much happened by chance. The reason people knock this movie re-make is because it abandons the original concepts and has way too much of a childish tone to it. Even Gerry Anderson himself said "It was disgraceful that such a huge amount of money was spent with people who had no idea what Thunderbirds was about and what made it tick."
