I actually didn't know how to breathe in general when singing and was wondering why i kept running out of breath so my director sent me to youtube to watch diaphragm videos and i didn't even know there was different types of breathing thanks for the vid
I disagree entirely. If you generally breathe like you demonstrated it in the beginning (your natural everyday breathing) you are breathing the wrong way. You should always breathe with the help of the diaphragm, it's an important muscle. Try running Forrest Gump style while breathing into your shoulders. Consequently, there's no need to change your breathing habits (if your breathing is naturally ok) or pay too much attention to it when singing.
QUESTION!!!! : so when you sing, and you try to sing a long note or make the note higher for whatever song you're singing does your stomach go out or in? because when i sing i find my stomach going in trying to get that very last high note or highes note i can reach for whatever song im singing because im out of breathe, is that bad or good? or should i sing and with the long part have stomach outword?
great info .....I think that when I scream at my kids I always use my diaphragm because I don't take the time to take a deep breath......so if you wana get good at this ...scream at your kids more.....lol ...anyways thanks for sharing your signing tips...cheers
I have bought a lot of "how to sing" books, courses, etc. and this video is probably one of the best on singing from the diaphragm. It won´t make you pitch perfect but it does give you a raised awareness of what muscles you are employing when you are singing. Dave Trevor really should be thanked for putting some high quality information out there for the general public. He has really impressed me with his dedication and concern, a true teacher.
jimiclaptoncarl18 YES! Definetely! You can absolutely still breathe out of your mouth. What you'll find is that its easier to stay IN the diaphragm by breathing through the nose, also easier and less effort. Simple is what we want. Thanks for the Q! :D
@Mtreadway81077777 no its for both. Singing whether its chest, head, mixed or falsetto voices all come from the diaphragm. Feel free to watch the lessons on the different voices for more info. Thanks for the question! :D
ill have to try this :) people always cannot hear me when i speak, im "soft spoken" lol. but my grandparents of whom i stay with are really hard of hearing, so i often have to repeat myself, making my voice stronger and using less effort would be great because i get so frustrated repeating myself! :D

Hello Dave, your the bome, love your video,I know its gota help lot of folks,it sure teaches me some new things that I never new, your ok my friend, thank you so very much for sharing your new video, very cool thumbs up my friend, have a really nice day,and thanks so much for stoping by my way and being a help here)
This is what my director told me in band. He did this thing where he showed us something on his phone and to stay quiet, keep our hand on our stomach and just try to pay attention to the picture. EVERYONE ended up not moving their shoulders and notice their stomach was. I guess it was a great exercise.
Another great vid. Now I've watched it I can't wait till friday comes again. Thank you so much for your answers. It is important. I knew before that diaphragm is a muscle that's why I figured that it should be somehow feld. And at this point I feel the use of it only from time to time really.... But as you said it's a question of practice. Many times in the gym you are not able to feel and be aware of some muscels until you exercise them for a long time. It's so cool to hear my nick on ST!!!
Very informative lesson Dave thanks! One question though, you can still breathe with the diaphragm when you inhale through your mouth, I'm assuming you can.. Because in the video, you basically only inhaled through your nose; was there a reason for this?
i just cant get enough air when i breath from the diaphragm
