  • "As a 7 year old he earned money for his first bike by sweeping dublin floors"- does anyone else notice how liggett includes random information that has very little relation to what is happening.

  • Lance didn't look that tired..... He must be better

  • roche is a name to fear

  • Jeff. Awesome.

  • Am I the only one who gets a bit choked up watching this segment as Roche & Delgado duel it out, with the poignant commentary of Phil Liggett?

  • I can't hear anything with this awful music in the backgroung!

A cycling race doesn't need soundtrack music like a movie.

  • @maxocchi16 unfortunately in the USA it does, this was in the lemond abc sports era, where producers tried to infuse drama into a sport that most americans had no clue about and therefore didn't understand the underlying drama and effort that riders made.

  • @maxocchi16 i was 14 when this all happend and a cyclist then.you have to understand something...back then it was an act of god to even have coverage...it came on for an hour a week on the weekend (USA) and for me it was the most important thing...it was also mized in with auto sports and tennis...they put the lame music in there to sell it to the people who would much rather watch NASCAR than what a bike race .they sold and packaged it to NON cyclist, us real riders were happy for a crumb on TV

  • @bikeracerguy john tesh

  • que grande eras Roche!....a ver si tu hijo Nicolas te emula la mitad, por lo menos...Que me gustó verle en la pomada con los grandes de esta edición de la Vuelta España...

  • I've been up there last year (2009). Amazing!

  • no doping? are you kidding me? just as bad back then..

  • @angus4463

Fignon even said everyone was doing it. including him. so if everyone was doing it, it was a fair game boiii! i love watching these old tours.

    RIP fignon

  • why hasent there been a up hill TT in the TDF for years yes its the race of truth,,

  • @chapman7804 2004?

  • Supermans!

  • everyone calls it 'the race of truth'

  • Terrible music.

  • The music is what makes this segment so great my friend...I used to watch it to get psyched back in my younger days..now at 45 yeras old it is still my favorite TDF scene/music combo...!!!

  • Man, this is one of my favorite taped tour videos.

I like when Andy Hampstein was being shadowed by a spectator up the climb. and decided to spit on the ground in front of the guy so he'd stop following him.

I met the 7-eleven team at a pro criterium in Long Beach back in the 80's. I was a kid in the heyday of my cycling career, and meeting these guys was like meeting rock stars. Davis Phinney was such a cool guy.

  • I'm looking forward to climbing this monolith in 2014!

  • I found most of the important stages but the first long ITT is missing (between TTT and ITT on Ventoux, and I think Roche won that stage. This was the last of the MONSTER tours with split stages, 23 or even 24 stages and ! rest day (if any!!). The 1988 tour was the largest drop in distance in the history of the sport (as compared to 1987 and most modern Tours to that point).

  • Wow, how eloquent the words to this video are. For me this video sends chills down my spine. This clip represented my "Vision quest" so many years ago. It was 1987 and a young man in Washington had a dream of someday riding in the Tour too! While I never reached that Heaven I did reach a star. I qualified and raced in the 1988 Olympic Trials held that year in Spokane ,Wa! 20 years have passed but yet I still feel the same things when I watch this video! It's only a mountain........

  • phil ligget... kicks ass!

  • If I ever get hung up on what professional cycling has become, I play my own recording of this sequence and I get fired up again. Epic man vs. mountain. I love the people on the sides jumping with excitement when JFB comes up the hill. I met Phil Liggett once and complimented his writing: "when the mountain repeated its relentless challenge: how high? how far? how fast? His reserved response: "I seem to remember saying something like that, eh"

  • 2 riders have only ever won the triple - Giro, TDF, and World Rd Race Championships in one year: Mercxx and Roche.

"87 TDF was a historic epic battle

  • Kewlios

  • I always think of this clip when I am climbing. "How high?, how long?, how fast?". Liggett is amazing.

  • @hc40 LOL@notdoping

  • Great! Simply love the Ventoux....!

  • i was 14 when this was going on...

Delgado was amazing..and in 1988 he finally won..Roche never shinned as bright after 1987, he had a bad knee and that really threw him off..alot of people complain about the music..i tend to be greatful that we even or ever got coverage of it at all

    D

  • great times. i was there at the day of the climb trial

as an 8 year old kid. the french went crazy when bernard won, it was on 14 of july

  • thanks for uploading. got to love liggett's poetry.

  • how high

    how long

    how fast

  • these old clips bring back so many great memories. Classic stuff!!

  • Good piece, music sucks though, can barely hear Phil Liggets commentary.

  • I want the 1990 TDF

  • Kewlios

  • That is indeed Yanni's music. The piece is called "After The Sunrise"

  • i got hooked on cycling because of this tour. i was 6 years old! its a shame that this was the highlight of bernard's career. he was better than his results on paper made him look.

  • i think it's john tesch music

  • Look out -- Yanni coming.

  • gotta love it!!!
