Actually, this video was taken out of context. The audience is laughing at something else that is happening onstage at the same time that is completely unrelated.
@grandmantis Agree, but I like the laughs because it give a dramatic twist, the feeling that people are insensitive, this is a perfect scene or a complete movie in two minutes.
i remember seeing this on tv as a 12yo: one of the things i will never forget [and probably my first encounter with this amazing -and initially rejected from the musical it was meant for- song]
The Nelken dance it was my first play that i have seen of the Pina Bausch, i was 17 years, and now I´m 29 years and still soooo living in my mind, after i could see her again in your city Wupertall, Masurca Fogo and again wonderful, Thanks ,thanks and thanks for give to me and the world a possibility see the dance and theather like soo perfect and soo mucht pasion, and this part and that play "the man I love" I never forget!!!!
lutz forster give me classes in my dance school and he is awesome as a teacher and dancer, and this work is one of my favorites of him and pina, i love this man!! and pina's work!!
..thanks for posting this...Nelken was the first of many Pina pieces seen live...and I remember this and so many other "scenes" (the onions, the seasons dance among them) with great affection !

I agree. It would never occur to me that this could be funny. The laughter must be caused by their discomfort.
