This song and video was beyond it's time! It's so fucked up how hip-hop has fallen. We use have great MCs like Biggie and Pac, now who do we have? T-Pain and Soulja Boy! :(
word bro! Think about it the roots were dissin rappers from the 90's in this video! The 90's was better than this decade of mainstream hip hop artists. What is next from 2010 to 2020? Fuck the Radio I dont think I'm listening again lol !
Good music is still here, just not in the mainstream anymore.. You're really going to have to dig deep and look for underground artist if you want that old 80's and 90's feel good music..
Great video!...every cliche in this video just reminds me of many videos that puffy came out with or helped produce in the 90s lol (this video came out in 96', 97')..standing in times square from the 112 Only U video, the girl in bed with the drink is kinda like faith evans from biggies One More Chance, and the girls near the water and ppl everywhere with champagne is similar to biggies Juicy and Big Poppa vids..& those r prob just a few lol
this song & video was ahead of its time IMO. Hip Hop was still real when this came out. If anything they should make an updated version of this video satirizing what's in today's "hip hop" vidz...
paid to fake it....lol...severe but cramp...muahahaa....ive enjoyed this cut and the roots for a while and this video put the meaning intp perspective..but the roots or on the jimmy fallon show now< i mean come on
This video shows groups like the Roots don't need to compromise their integrity/artistic abbilities and those silly things to sell records. While today's fake rappers show those things only to make money. The only problem is Hip-hop's priorities have changed drastically.
I'd disagree. The Roots lay a much more intricate track which includes a much greater jazz influence and intricacy than most other rappers. They also place a much greater value on making all the music, whether it be writing meaningful lyrics, having actual flow, or actually playing instruments and making music. The Roots also make an effort to identify and eradicate flaws they see instead of contributing to them for a profit.
they were makin fun back then and yet cats are still doin the same trash in videos to this day...have we learned nothin....i miss Hip-Hop so much.....
This song came out in 1996 and the fact that the themes can be applied to today's "music" speaks volumes of the stagnation and devolution rampant in rap's presentation.
LOL @ severe butt cramp now thats funny.i wonder if these ladies really be havin butt cramps booty dancing on these corny rap video's well young youth peep the message in this song..NEVER DO WHAT THAY DO & Learn knowlegde of self..! (peace to the most high!)
this is the perfect "HIP HOP SONG" That Speaks Bout The Youth & The Way Music Is Being Viewed Today. Now I See Some Say That THE ROOTS are complainin but i see it as a seed of truth that thay are plaintin into your mind.how many other rappers are droppin wisdom like this? lil wayne sure as hell ain't doin that.talkin bout i'm a blood & i got the tightest whip & i'm iced up? the youth eats that type of fooolishness up.but when thay grow there mind become hungry for wisdom & jams like will be there
This is sooo funny, cause in The Game's song, Game's pain they do the mansion seen , with him in a nice car, pulls up on a mansion and a guy (ice cube) comes out and give him props.
Why are the Roots complaining? Hip-hop may have gotten a little commercial in the late 90's, but the rappers had flow. Whereas today they all sound retararded? This video is much more relevant today then back then.
that's the point man..they saw the direction that hip-hop was headed in and they decided to confront it. This song speaks the truth on so many levels..and the lyrics (and video) are incredibly on point about todays hip-hop.
I was thinking that too, but then I sat back and thought about the videos back then. They took shots a Biggie, Digable Planets, Tupac, and so many others. Even back then, they were over doing it, knowing life was not all that easy. I bet in 20 years, they still gone be doing this bullshit.
"The principles of true hip-hop have been forsaken,ot's all contractual and about money making...we heard you.....Jokes on you,you heard a biting ass crew!"
the entire 1st verse is one of the sickest in hip-hop history!

yo i love this joint ...brings back mad memories ..and has an on point message ...... KEEP IT REAL SON ...dont believe all that shieeet u see in the videos
WOW!!! This is REAL hip hop!! I just love how smooth the beat is!! Takes me back to my college days!! WOW....and I love the video....making fun of all the Sh*t we see nowadays....man..they knew rap videos were on their way down the toilet!!
I believe it's called "What They Do" by some unknown group called "The Roots" its off the album "Illadelph Halflife" (track number eight), released in 1996...you should check it out
You think I'm stupid just because I pointed out that he gave you the name of the song your listening to and you searched it and got rick rolled. It's alright though, I always consider the source of the insult, and in this case it's a human that can't even take the time to spell "your" and calls people "wanker"
omg! uthink i actually think i searched for the same song again? fkin wow mate, u just dont cease to amaze me. next thing ur probably gonna be wonderin how i got into your computer. id

I didn't read the whole conversation, and I don't plan to. Sorry if you were being sarcastic whoever you are, but please stop wasting both of our time with these useless comments tannoy01 :]

......wow! and u think im stupid. u obviously havent met urself, ur the dumbest wanker iv ever read a comment of on utube comments ever, literally
djdogjuam 3 years ago
You think I'm stupid just because I pointed out that he gave you the name of the song your listening to and you searched it and got rick rolled. It's alright though, I always consider the source of the insult, and in this case it's a human that can't even take the time to spell "your" and calls people "wanker"
