Gene, it's pretty funny seeing all the comments saying it was a catfish/bowfin/hammerhead shark. Guys, I was the one who caught this fish. I had Fluke (cameraman) right behind me filming so it kinda restricted what I could do as far as hook sets. The fish in this lake have that dark bronze look because of the high ph levels. It is very tanic water. Hope everyone enjoys the vid!
@konner96 They are called Tiger bass because the breed was developed at Auburn University. The bass is a cross bread between a Florida strain and a Northern strain bass. The result it a fast growing agressive bass. Then you add the newest technology of training them to eat from a fish feeder and we are able add 1.5 to 2 pounds a year onto each fish. This is twice as fast as normal. We were the first private lake to do it this way and it ain't cheep. That's why we charge so much to fish here.
@konner96 What people don't understand about the lake I guide at. It's the most heavily managed private lake in the country. We have a special breed of bass. Not only are they Hybrid Tiger Bass but they are feed trained. They don't miss many meals and are huge for their length. I caught and 8lber a few months ago that was only 20 inches long. This is why that bass was so wide in the head. If you watch the rest of my frog videos you will see what I'm talking about.
@drumminboy123 it takes some practice, but you can get it down pretty quick. Use small, 1-2" pops on slightly semi slack line with your rod tip pointed straight down. If your still having trouble, put a split ring on the front, trim one of the legs shorter than the other, and use braid. My setup in the video is a Revo STX, 50lb Power Pro, and a 7'3" Powell H. Remember, the action is entirely produced from the rod, not the reel. The reel is used to pick up the slack, slowly. Good luck dude!
@ColeFeigler1 I actually caught a catfish on a topwater lure before. I caught it on a jitterbug. I have caught them on spinnerbaits, jig and pigs, and even crappie jigs before.
at first i thought it was a grinnel or a catfish, but after the hook set you can see the bass's mouth flare out some. definately a bass and a toad at that.
@Flatzout they are known as bowfin or blackfish. They pretty much live in most of the lower 50 states. They look sort of prehistoric with their continuous dorsal fin.
@Flatzout It was a bass and my head and camera were in the way of the hookset so he never got to drive the hook home. The reason I didn't show the bass is because it came off the hook at the very end of the video.
@TheBaseballrocks23 Whatever dude. I was there. I know what it was. 22 years of bass fishing and 4 years as a professional guide on that body of water tells me that it was a bass.
yea you can kinda tell he didn't set that hook to well but it looked good enough just a big boy trying to get off I guess, that was amzing footage and nice vid quality.
@MNBullet No Kidding, if I hadden't had my big head in the way Ryan could have really laid into him like your supposed to. Oh well, it made for some good footage anyway.
i remember seeing this on one of the B.A.S.S. tournaments

@Flatzout wasn't a bass or a cat, it was a blackfish. Color gives it away.

Cmon folks...it's rare to catch a catfish like that on topwater.
It's likely a bass. Catfish are more scavengers but I have caught
catfish on spinnerbaits and senkos lol
