Oceania is a REGION. Australia is a continent and a country. REGIONS can be bigger than continents (The Americas is anotehr example) But Oceania IS NOT a CONTINENT. It is a super-region.
@Blad771 Australia is not a continent. Its part of Oceania, which also includes New Zealand, Papua, Fiji, Palau and thousands of other islands in the Pacific
@MrChupsi88 Then you are wrong. But strictly so am I. For what do we mean by continents? The map of continents would look way different from what we're used to if it was by sole criteria of continental plates. Even Europe would be split into many continents in that case. But in traditional geography, Australia (the island itself + Tasmania) is part of the continent called Oceania which also include the mentioned nearby areas.
I never understood the Eastern border of Europe. I mean, the Urals are a mountain range. They are part of the land mass. It's not like California is on a different continent than Texas because of the Rockies.
There really isn't any such thing as "Europe" in the sense of it being its own continent. It's just part of one big continent, Eurasia.
The idea of it being its own continent is more a cultural thing, a way to seperate it from the cultures of Asia, which seems unnecessary nowadays.
@thebigJ1er the greeks thought the caspian sea is connected to the polar sea. so it's a tradition that was never abandoned to count europe as a continent
I mean, it's an artificial construct, isn't it? Where else is one side of a mountain range a different continent than the other? Is California on a seperate continent than the eastern states?
It's a vestige of racism, jingoism, and eurocentrism. "Those" people there are different, and inferior, not like us Europeans! etc. etc.
It's an artificial border, and we have enough lines separating us as it is.
@thebigJ1er I think geographically, there is no need to seperate Asia & Europe. But as cultures, I think it's in everyone's best interests if Catho-Christians & Muslims are kept apart through the boundaries of Europe & the EU.
Yet another strike against religion, that. It's another artificial construct that seperates us.
Is "Christian" even an appropriate description of Europe anymore (Western, anyway)? They've advanced to the point where majorities are non-religious. Lucky Western Europe.
Perhaps the divide is between religious and secular, with another divide within religion between Xtian and Muslim.
@thebigJ1er Well, one of the main reasons why the extremists are attacking the West is because the West (Catho-Christian/Protestant/Something-to-do-with-Christ) came and mingled with the Islamic people, trying to take over. Alexander The Great found out Catho-Christians & Muslims don't mix. Then the Soviets. And now soon the US will find out too.
I get your point, so don't take this as disagreement, merely a correction. There weren't any Catholics or Xtians when Alexander lived (~300BCE), he was centuries before they showed up
The civilized world wasn't divided in the same way back then. What you're thinking of didn't start until after Mohammed, in the 8th century AD.
When they talked about climate, they were incorrect. Russia is in Europe, has a horrible weather system with -30 in winters and +30 in summers. Not all of Europe's climate is so good for farming, is it.
@spookyngrissom Australia isn't a continent, you are right my friends. The continent is actually called Oceania. Although it was formerly known as Australia, thus explaining why it is reffered to as such in this video...
