  • Im thinking about enrolling for a HIM program...can I still work as a RIT until I'm comfortable to become a manager or director? Thank so much! Love your videos

  • @CoilyShay09 Yes, you can pursue things how you see fit. I do suggest that you sit for the RHIT exam as soon as you finish. Always make a career plan and get yourself a mentor in the HIM field for assistance.

  • Hello, Thank You for your videos they are very helpful. I am looking at this field as I would like to upgrade my pay. I do have a bachalors degree in business administration. I am interested in trying distance education in regard to HIM but am not sure what way to go about it. Do you need to know alot of the sciences? I m not very good at the sciences. Can you please offer some direction

  • @fgtsi1 You do have to take classes in Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology. Those classes build on one another and give you the bases to understand what you read in patient's charts. That is, if you want to be a coder. Yet, those classes are built into the curriculum for all HIM degrees, even if you don't have an interest in being a coder and only focus on software, processes or management/administration.

  • Hi, again is it better to become an HIM verses a HIT, I think that the HIM has more career path, is this true, thank you so much for you videos,

  • @yackie7613 I think what you mean in RHIT vs RHIA. They are basically the same. RHIT is an Associate's degree and RHIA is a Bachelor's degree and has the management courses that the RHIT doesn't have. You can have a very similar career path with both.

  • Hi, thank you so much for the Q&A, I work full-time and I am a mother of three children, I completely my AA degree this past spring, I very interested in the HIM program, I really don't have the time, however I did find a couple of schools in my state florida, that offer the A.S degree online, in your opinion do you think that taking the courses online would be a great idea, Also one last questions, since I hav A,A completed do you think I would take less then a year to recieve A.S in HIM.

  • @yackie7613 Without knowing your curriculum I can't really say how much time it will shave from the 2 years but I'm sure the program chair can let you know. Maybe basic classes can be taken off but pretty much of the 2 years are the core classes so it might take the same time. Just check with the chair. I think online classes are great, I'm doing them myself, but they do take a lot of discipline. Good luck!

  • oops, i just sent you a message asking you one of these questions.

  • @Jessicalien10 It's okay!

  • I think your misconstrued associates, bachelors, and B.S.N in nursing. There is no associates that will qualify you as an RN(maybe LPN).

These individuals can obtain RN by completing a bridge course to RN. But, no associates would allow you the title of RN.

  • @rythmcity Excuse you but yes, you can have an Associates of Applied Science and be an RN. Wanna know how I know...because I graduated along side them. My sister is an RN with an ADN. Please, please do yourself the favor or researching something before you bring yourself to check some. A bridge program can bridge you as an RN/ADN as a RN/BSN. Also, I attended a BSN program so I know from both sides of the table. Please and Thank you.

  • I've decided to change careers. I'm now pursuing my Associates degree in HIM. I'm enrolled (Spring 2011) in an online course at Devry University. After graduating I plan to get my RHIT credentials. My academics counselor advised me to become a member of AHIMA. I joined this week. As I explored the AHMIA website I came across your you tube video. Your videos are very informative and have answered many of my questions and concerns. I will continue to follow. Thank you for your positive input.

  • Lots of good info in your videos. In one of your previous videos you explained how coders need to take into consideration all the symptoms a patient presents with, i.e. BUN and other chemical levels, etc. in order to code correctly. Did you retain all the disease processes from school or did you learn more as you were on the job? I want to do coding but when you explained that it made me think twice about whether or not i am ready for that! lol.

  • @saponithunder I did retain some information from school but a lot of it comes with experience. I truly do learn something every single day. I also research a lot and if you're facility has access to Coding Clinic, it will be your best friend.

  • @pinkdes2ny That's reassuring that a lot of it comes with experience. I already took note of your recommendation to study the Coding Clinic. So glad I reached your channel...thanks!

  • As always great information. Thanks..

  • I live in Ohio and I am doing the OHIMA test prep online.

  • @etatslartnec That's good to know...the OHIMA test prep. I'm in Ohio too and just graduated in Dec w/an associates degree. I've been awhile from the books now so I can definitely use some practice before taking the cert exam.

  • I work at a medical billing company we do not have seperate coders but for my job i will be trained in ambulatory coding in about three months, cause we have to code our own claims.

  • @etatslartnec That's good. If you can attend the prep test by your state association please attend them!

  • I graduated with an Associates degree in Health Information Management four months ago, and I am currently a Medical Billing Specialist. I am just trying to get some experience then I will move on to something else. I am studying for my certififcation, and i would love to become a coder.

  • @etatslartnec I remember you! Congratulations on graduations. Kudos for taking a job just to get your foot in the door. If you're near the coders start talking to people and ask for help. Go to the coding supervisor and tell her you're a recent graduate and could you practice on some old charts. I'm sure she'll remember that...
