  • From Amazon UK, DVD player 24 pounds, plug converter 4 pound, DVD 4.93. Less than 33 pound. I have no idea how much that's in american or what the shipping is. The speakers on my computer are only just so loud but not loud enough. I need this disc.

  • You can get it at the UK amazon site you'll need a multiregion player. Or just order a cheap dvd player from Britain and change the plug. I think this film would be worth it. Less than 5 pounds. That's surreal you can't get a copy in the civilised world but you can get it in Britain for less 5 pounds.

  • CUTE!

  • Is this film as good as Bergman's Magic Flute? Opinions please.

  • @Fuliginosus Well this surley is more originall and I respect that, but I would have liked it ot end diffrently. I acctually prefer Bergmans version. This production has it's faults. The Queen of the Night looks doesn't look a day older then her daughter and the special effects are rather bad. In Bergmans version the actors seem to fit good and it is set at a real theater and it is always cool to see those old-time styled sceen-changes!

  • @Metropofan You can pretty much buy it in France. :( I think it cost me something like $50 to import a copy a few years ago, and I can't play it except on my computer because of the region.

  • Lyrics in the info would be awesome :).

  • Wonderful

  • Wait you're de-meriting the queen on not being able to understand her?! if you can understand a coluratura in any language then shes doing something terribly wrong, she was one of the strongest singers in the film.

  • ....Hola otra vez, !!O.K. !!!!, !!O. K. !!!! estos videos (partes de la pelicula) completos, deben subirlos TODOS... No importa el idioma con el que lo interpreten... la OBRA en escencia es la Misma de GENIAL !!!!

  • I don't like the English (especially when it comes to the Queen of the Night... because even in English I still can't understand a word she sings), but in this film I felt like a lot of the sets and costume and cinematography was charming. I love the music of this opera and other than the Queen, I liked most of the performers. Didn't love 'em, but definitely liked 'em. The Papageno is definitely my favorite.

  • I liked Papageno a lot, but hated the Queen, Pamina and the boys. But hey, it's a quite good idea, even in English. My opinion!!!

  • Not bad, but the ending there gave me motion sickness and the ending lyrics were very scandalous XD Love Papagena's dress.

  • haha ^^ What do the ending lyrics say?!!

  • @papagena92 I think it's supposed to be "let the family start right now, let the mating start right now, let the breeding start right now" . . . I think. I could be wrong, and I probably am

  • i am here now...lovely moment...sing on....play on, Wolifie.....it is all beautiful.......

  • Ingmar Bergman's version is without a doubt unsurpassable. Small details make comedy and drama either shallow or deep. In my opinion the problem here lies not in the language bzw translation, but in the whole concept of the film. Does anybody know if there are any versions, scenic or filmed, from Bergman of Don Giovanni. It could be very well possible since he was one of greatest Mozart admirers of all times.

  • I'm quite sure he only did the Magic flute. I agree that his version is better, however i still think this movie has qualities as well. I like the way the way it's kinda too much of everything, just like the libretto is. Mozart wrote so beautiful music, to SUCH LOWSY librettos.

  • You're right, he did have a gift in that department, even though I think the Da Ponte collaborations are the exception; one just has to read the texts from almost every Lied or solo arias. But then again most composers have faced the same problem, excepting maybe Strauss or Berg...Wagner had to write his own librettos and, well...Verdi and Puccini (but then again 'La Fanciula del West???) had a little better luck. One understands why Beethoven decided to compose only one opera;-)

  • although i think in the case of the magic flute it was Schikaneder who wrote the lowsy libretto. But you're right!

incidentally, I always wonder if composers ever thought their music would still be highly regarded by many, in some cases over 200 years on. particularly when they do not even live to see the full acheivements in their era. Mozart died 3 months after The Magic Flute was first performed. Similarly with Bizet - Carmen was a "flop" until Italy embraced it after his death.

  • I agree with Walkemor, since I like both version. My top favourite one, so far, is a ROH production (in german) with Simon Keenlyside as Papageno.

Though Ben Davis and Haken Hagegard are both believable as Papageno too, I think!

  • What do the boys say? Though life is fleeting...

    and see what special...

  • This is my favorite song from that Opera!

  • Best version I have found on youtube so far! Thanks! It gets stuck in my head all the time!

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I've been a fan of Ben Davis' work since I saw him in Les Miz almost 10 years ago.

  • Hmmm...I maybe on my own here, I enjoyed this film than i do most times i go to the opera. Its an imaginative setting which has clearly had a alot thought put into it by Messers Fry and Branagh. I feel that they have done a good job at producting a really good job, The music is spot on and the casting is perfect. The Tenor may not be as good as Pavarotti but i would never have Pavers singing this role any day. I do dispise it when they pick Concert singers for opera's. They cant act. Finale

  • What's with the dancing?

  • Does anyone know if and when it is coming to the US?

  • The film would be great if it weren't for the ridiculously weird scenes like showing the queen of the nights mouth for 15 minutes while she sings her arias.

  • Yeah, that is kind of odd. I wonder what Branagh was going for there.

  • Well everytime she hits one of the higher notes a Tank comes out. Thus showing her crazy and amazing power like :P

  • Whoa, really? I'll have to look for that.

  • Yes I noticed that, but I wondered still if it was an advertisement for fellatio.

  • To 5 meteruppiluten:

How do you know? You surely haven't watched it through?

  • You actually watched 2 hours of something that you found lame and boring? Surely you don't drink the whole tureen of soup if you don't like the taster. I'm watching it for the second time and find that even more rewarding.

  • Don't be angry because you don't have anything else valid to say in return.

  • you know, i usually do not like opera in english, but this is actually quite good

  • Much better than the one at the Met huh?

  • ...if i had ever been to the met, then i could offer an opinion.

  • youtube(.)com/watch?v=epguz5oLk54

  • oh yes, the translations in that one seemed so... cumbersome, they did not seem to fit the music as well as this translation does

  • And they trimmed it to 100 mins too! :(

  • America opera is forced to constantly suffer because of the tripe that was Julie Taymor's, "The Magic Flute." I'm sorry, but floating ham-hawks and backwards baseball caps, a good production does not make.

  • Well, they do still put on real operas, no?

  • absolutely delightful!

but he ain't really counting up slowly, is he? ^^
