I agree 3:42 and the next slide is the ONLY reason why anyone with disabilities should be and up in my area, if you do it and its not for that lagitament reason: your sent to jail. NO QUESTIONS,DEALS,BAIL, OR PAROLE.
Children are safest unborn. That way no freaks can get at them. Yeah loved you enough. Death is a welcome escape too thank goodness for death. He got away they can't follow him there. Sick sick people.
Ya know, I think if there were video surveillance cameras in the schools and classrooms where disabled children are taught, fed, etc., any restraints being used or other abuses would be curtailed significantly if people knew their actions were being recorded and could be used against them in a court of law if the child they decide needs to be restrained happens to die during the restraint period. People use nanny-cams all the time, why not for special needs children who are just as vulnerable?
there are many reason's why not to do this, what are the solutions to out of control children who are a safety issue to themselves and others in public schools
it was hard to c some of the pictures yet I am glad too. My son who has autism was abused by staff and students at his school I begged for them to help him and no one did nothing., I asked at an IEP review for him to be transfered and they tried telling me not with out more testing. I was like did anyone just here this has nothing to do with my son? He deserves a safe/ quality education. He was coming home with black eyes, bruises and rugburns. There is an investigation and he hasnt return since
@EatCandy Isolating your child isnt the answer either. Our children need to be with other children. There are good schools & teachers out there. This is abuse & should be illegal. Our children are safe but we still need to fight to stop this. If everyone keeps walking away the abuse will continue. They are told how to best work with your child in IEP meetings. IEP's are often not followed & that is illegal but who is going to enforce it? No one!
@annam20 these kids don't need to go to school if they are being mistreated. what in the world would they benefit just because they need to be in the public if they are constantly being abused? my son is 21 and autistic and that happened to him. I have to be his voice if they can't depend on us, who else are there.
@pshepherd58 Parents arent aware this is happening until it happens to them. According to your post it happened to you also. No one sends their child to be abused. Our children are protected by Federal Law called IDEA. What needs to happen is schools need to be held accountable for their blantant disregard of the Law. If we run away and dont stand up together and fight it will never change. You dont have to leave your child in danger while doing so.
No restraint is a safe restraint , yesterday, I walked in on my sons teacher with my son un the floor in a choke-hold. needless to say, he is not going back to school EVER AGAIN!!!!!!

@MultiSnooty There ya go.... A fine example of what children with disabilities are up against. Im so sick of hearing how over worked & under paid they are. If your unhappy go find another job but keep your hands off of our children!
@annam20 amen! all children should be free to learn and without fear of physical harm from their teachers. Are teachers suppossed to be the example here.why are teachers so afraid of losing their jobs? they can't fire every one. don't take it out upon our children because of being overworked and overpaid..teachers strike for better pay, why not demand to be properly trained in postive behavioral support training? why is'nt this being done so our children can attend school in a safe envoirment?
@al6157 Really?? So you have been in every school & know this to be true? Why dont you tell the parents of the children who have been mentally & physically traumatized or killed from the unneccessary & overuse of restraint & seclusion in schools. They are being used as punishment all across the USA! What you are explaining is what is suppose to be happening but it isnt!!! There is no such thing as a safe restraint!
@annam20 then please tell everyone how it should be done. How do you handle a child that is not compliant and is agitated? How to you stop it from escalating every time? If you have the magic alternative that isn't a drug or being tossed into a facility please share it and market it. You paint this picture that restraint is never necessary - that all special needs children are docile and compliant if you just find the right magic words to make it happen. What reality do you live in?
@TheBeccaUnit Restraint is only to be used in imminent danger. Using it for noncompliance is ABUSE! The first way to stop it from escalating is to not restrain or drag the CHILD into a seclusion room. I live in the year 2010 we are suppose to be more civilized. There are Mental Health Faciities that are 100% restraint free & the rest are close. Schools need to use Positive Behavior Support (PBS) go to: aprais (dot) Tash (dot) org & find staff who want to help children not punish them.
A child who is head banging or trying to injure themselves is frustrated, overwhelmed & trying to communicate that. Find out what he needs but I can assure you he doesnt need people jumping on him & stressing him out more. It's a matter of common sense, isnt it?
Yes it is pretty severe. Most of the children in the video are high functioning. I havent seen any severely autistic children who are prone to self injury & head banging attending public school. Are you saying jumping on those children & laying on them until they stop breathing is the only alternative?
This is pretty severe. But what is a parent or teacher or staff member to do when an autistic child is prone to self injury or is causing injuries to others while trying to hit him or herself, what are they supposed to do in that situation? let him or her give themself brain damage?
@Pam4Rob positive behavior support training that is what is being withheld from teachers, because teachers are afraid of losing their jobs , they don't demand that the district give it to them...positive behavior support training and passive restraint training are two different things altogether, my son does not head butt but thanks to the school system he is terrified of going back to school..restraint and seclusion is not the answer.
my severly autistic son was the victem of theft of his luch money for a year by the matron on his bus.....it's not restraints but it's yet another way of people taking advantage of kids that cant speak for themselves. Unfortunately the person still works for the school district, if anyone knows who I can contact to fix that PLEASE let me know!
Please urge appropriate state and federal authorities to conduct a thorough investigation for abuse and neglect of day students and residential students at Anderson Center for Autism in Staatsburg, New York. Please contact me through youtube if you believe your child has been abused at Anderson or if you know someone who has. Thank you.
@skyhawk575 The Documentary "Real Danger: Restraints & our children" by the Dept. of Mental Health is finished & will be out soon. I suggest you purchase a copy, go to restrainingchildren(dot)com to find out how. Your way of thinking is outdated! There are residential facilities who no longer use restraints & are having no problems. People are actually being helped instead of injured or killed!!!
I have given the school system a loving boy. He'll stay loving too if he is nurtured and taught with accommodations. However, if he has to suffer from the systemic abuse of peers, teachers and paraprofessionals, I guess they'll just blame him.
They always point the finger at our children instead of pointing one back at themselves . They would like to place the lable on my son as a vicous agressor. Instead of calling themselves that . Now is'nt that a crying shame?
Yes they do, unfortunately they would rather employ the use of Seclusion and Restraint on our children then give them the real dignity of being a child that they deserve
My daughter was restrained in a special school in the uk. My daughter is the most quite person you could meet and now thanks to them she is in a wheelchair. There is nothing i can do becouse the system is messed up. I now hometeach her, if i had known of my rights to homeschool earlier she wouldn't be in a wheelchair today. I love my daughter so much and i love teaching her at home, she is a great person to be with and never complains.
I understand completly. I do not trust so easily anymore either. One person alone cannot do anything about it. That is how they want us to feel...like there are more of them then us. We as concerned parents and citizens need to rally TOGETHER. Because believe me, the school system rallys together with everyone that works for them. I can understand your frustration. I even had pictures and was not believed. They banded Together. It is clear laws need to change to better protect our children.
I did'nt mean to be upsetting. But I feel the same way. I cannot trust the school system to take care of who is most close and dear to my heart so I am homeschooling him. Until the laws change in favor for our children , it is the only way they are truly protected.
In a Associated Press article from 1-13-09 regarding Restraint and Seclusion, Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, said he would schedule a hearing on the issue.
this happened to my daughter when she was 3. She came home numerous times with hand marks on her arms, and the school simply said they were not hurting her. It's sickening, and needs to stop.
Thank you for bringing light to this horror. National Disability Rights Network has compiled a report- "School is not supposed to hurt" and can be viewed at their website napasDOTorg.

I have given the school system a loving boy. He'll stay loving too if he is nurtured and taught with accommodations. However, if he has to suffer from the systemic abuse of peers, teachers and paraprofessionals, I guess they'll just blame him.
It breaks my heart....This is what my son suffered as well. Now he is afraid to go out in public. The laws do not really protect our children. They give us a false sense of security when they are not followed or enforced. I turned to the law for help and I ended up in Juvenile court in Fulton Co GA for educational neglect because I wouldn't let my school system send my child back to a psycho ed program where he was abused. Home school.-
Take your own children into your own hands.
School is not mandatory, just promoted greatly.
Make your own choice tell them how your children need to be handled. Or do it for yourself and especially them.
