At the time he wrote this many more protestants would have considered themselves irish. The whole 'we're not irish, where the fuck is ireland, we're more british than the brits themselves' thing is a relatively modern phenomenon born out of the troubles.
And yes, the army were sent to protect catholics initially, but that lasted all of 5 minutes when they took over the reigns of the RUC, radicalised the very community they were supposed to be defending and ended up starting a full blown war.

Thank goodness for the Good Friday agreement. When I was attending a Catholic school in the 80s there was muttering support for the IRA, what a lot of crap that was. Macca has moved on to telling us all to stop eating meat, not a bad idea but failing to understand that steak say is a luxury for many people anyway, a rich man out of touch.

It's funny how easily people embrace revisionist history. McCartney is second to no one; Lennon's legacy is continually viewed through the lens of his early death, augmenting the stature of an already extremely talented man. I can see how you could argue that John is a slightly better songwriter, but Paul is probably the greatest white singer ever (+ Freddie), a superior technical musician, and his stage presence /charisma was a real driving force for the Beatles success in their early days.

I agree with much of what you say. Paul was, by far, the best musician in the band. However, his vision was secondary, and motivated for the most part, by others. His songs were primarily originated by ideas which were provided by John, Dylan, the Beach Boys, Loving Spoonful etc.....too many to mention. Again, Paul was the consumate musician. But, John was the visionary, and word artist. Separated, they were only half of what they were together.
