  • Hi Ann,

What you perform here is incredible.

We have monthly folkmusic sessions in my village and during the break I usually drink a Belgian beer that has the same name of the violonist whose arrangement you use, Vieuxtemps. Whenever you come to Belgium, let me know, so I can invte you to taste one of these beers. I play Yankee Doodle myself on bagpipes. .But nothing like your version of course. I have no video yet but I send you a Waltz that I received as a wedding present from a good friend

  • Barnie song? xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

  • Wow *-*. I want to be as good as you, but this will never happen.

  • I've watched a few of your videos now, and appreciate the music as well as the comments you make explaining it. Being a complete layman when it comes to music I don't understand 90% of what you're saying, but it's interesting nonetheless. Thanks so much for taking the time to post these videos.

  • funny piece of music, where can i get sheet music? I'd like to play it

  • @Vincetheviolin You can get both the violin and piano parts on imslp (a huge database of public domain sheet music). Just Google imslp.

  • Such entertaining playing. Terrific stuff. The screen notes are a wonderful idea/bonus.

Some credit for the pianist, shirley.:-) [Compare film "Airplane!]

By nearly 70 years, Vieuxtemps anticipates the same joke in Dohnanyi's Variations on a Nursery Rhyme.

  • Girrrl you whip that hair :D Haha amazing violin playing.

  • kids r gona freak out when they realise learning a nursery rhyme is this tough

  • My daughter is 8 years old. She is playing Csardas by Monti now. Looking forward to playing this one in the future! Love the left hand pizz and false harmonics! thnaks for sharing!

  • Thank you for this amazing video, Ann. I enjoyed it.

  • I can't wait to learn thisXD Ann, you are absolutely amazing!!

  • Nice :) Hope I'll play it soon :D

  • hi all well?

  • hi all well?

    these cool videos

    it was you who put

    I'm also a violinist

  • i love this :) <3

  • Love your dress! Who designed it? I think your playing is wonderful, by the way.

  • thank you very much...it is very beautifully played and i learned alot from it...well wishes..

  • Wonderful and awesome playing and also very nice dress!!!! :) I've got a few questions to ask ( some are quite silly)

    Are you dating the pianist???

What violin and bow do you use?

Why does your pianist get pissed often when he has such a beautiful and talented violinist to accompany???

  • Única

  • the pianist looks pissed. lol

  • @holmesau, LOL!! He frankly often is :)....

  • @Annfontanella Pissed? I'd say incredibly bored looking!! :P

    Beautifully done!!

  • @Annfontanella were you trying to poke him...in the end there? lol. Nice playing btw :D

  • @holmesau he really does

  • What an odd little piece! I don't know if I like it or not. Some parts are so cool, and others just seem corny. Hmm... Might need to give another listen.

  • Just amazing! I thought that your left hand pizz were fantastic! Thanks for posting!

  • @avpkingdomhearts2, Thanks! You need some left hand strength to do them, but they aren't as hard as they seem, though! :)

  • @Annfontanella well they seem hard to me when i try them, but then again i've been trying to figure it out myself, i don't have a teacher at the moment XP

  • is the background real?

  • Yes, indeed, BaronVonHavok. If you read the description, you will see that this was a live concert in Lancaster, PA! :)

  • By the way, from 2:35 to the end of the piece you ARE practically playing the Orange Blossom Special....To me it looks almost exactly the way Roy Clark does it. Why not give it a shot just for laughs when it's convenient. Again, I'm not suggesting that you play this at a concert. Best wishes.

  • I wasn't seriously suggesting that you include "The Orange Blossom Special" in your repertoire, I only wondered if you ever played something totally out of character. I've heard Roy Clark playing classical "fiddle" and I think the piece was "Violin Concerto in A minor", first movement.. He sounded pretty good to me, but I'm a clarinet/saxophone player. What do I know about playing the violin?....nothing. Thanks for your response and best wishes to you in your career.

  • How do you virbato like that and how do all pros go that fast

  • Vibrato is one of those finicky skills that's really hard to explain! Primarily, it's an arm tremor, so make a muscle. Your arm will start to shake. Just make sure that when you hold the violin that your hand doesn't get in the way. You want minimal contact with the neck since the friction will slow your hand down....

  • This is great. Can anyone tell me what the technique is called from 2:20-2:42, and how is it done? Sounds like artificial harmonics to me.

  • You're right, Taso! Artificials are produced by stopping your 1st finger down on the strong and placing for 4th finger lightly down on the same string to produce a tone 2 octaves higher!

  • @Annfontanella Sounds like the same mechanics as 5th fret harmonics on guitar, using 3/4 length of string to create 2nd octave overtone.

    Great playing as always

  • WONDERFUL! I was so surprised that this was posted on YouTube! I saw Joshua Bell play this as his encore piece not but two weeks ago! Very nice playing.

  • This is wonderful....I can see the drama at the beginning and then the humor...bravo........Incidentally I'll bet you could play the strings off with "The Orange Blossom Special".......or do classical musicians play country music?

  • It's the funniest thing - the beat is totally different, as the sound, so I know I definitely can't do crossover! :)

  • 3:50

  • Thanks, lubahegre! I'm afraid this is a piece that always makes me laugh a bit!

  • and at 3:0

  • Best part is when she smiles at 1:00 ! : ), make me smile back - love it.

  • I liked how it was so serious at first. lol.. the smile got me. :D

  • Thanks, Oji! I can never help but smirk a little when that theme comes in!

  • I saw Joshua Bell a few days ago and he played this as his encore. People were actually laughing!

  • Musicgirl, yes, people do laugh at this piece a lot! It's just so silly!

  • how long did it take u 2 learn?

  • Madaster, about a week....I just practiced it all day for 7 days, LOL

  • o wow ur really good

  • amazing amazing

    subscribed immediatly!! :-D

  • I loved it....... The Yankee doodle part was fantastic. Even though it is just a rhyme it sounded so nice on the violin

Is there any chance that you might be having a concert in New York city?????

I would love to come and see you play

  • ReinaChica, Thanks! I do play in the Northeast portion of the US. Subscribe for updates on concerts!

  • great stuff...

    where is she from???

  • Fabricioteidy, I am from Philadelphia, PA!

    Ann

  • Maravillosa!!!

  • Thanks, Marilo!

  • Very nice sensibility and touch on the instrument, only this music is sooo vinegry sounding to me (the way they ...fiddled...withthe original simplicity).

    best to you!

  • 8RR8R8, It Does have a funny sound to it, doesn't it? But that's part of why its so amusing, I think :)....It's fun!

  • I enjoyed that very much. It looks like you are having so much fun.

  • Jayron, I was! :)

  • Ann Fontanella you are so good!!!!

I want to play just like you and Yo Yo Ma someday!!!

  • Thanks, Xxl!! And do you play both violin and cello??! :)

  • No i just want to be good as him. I probably might play the cello someday!!

  • XxlKairalxX, LOL :)....!

  • woah you are so amazing!!!! your fingers are flying!!!!! wow it looks like the videos where it's fast forwarded but its not! its soooo amazing *-*

  • Ishida, I've played this piece a LOT! :) If the convention goes well (and I actually manage to get down! :)) I might be able to pull a booking in 2011/2012; I believe that's what's getting booked right now...

  • coolio! so you're going to NC in 2011 or 2012? i must know so i can see you!

  • Wonderful, Ann. Thank you for posting this. Are you planning to tour in South Carolina soon?

  • I'm going to be hitting the convention down in NC with any luck, so perhaps I will be able to pull a couple of concerts in the south! :)

  • OMG WHEN???? I LIVE THERE

  • GOOD JOB!!!!!

  • Thanks you, connoli!

  • Never played Vieuxtemps like she can.

Proves that youth, blondes and beauty are not stereotypically dumb but may be most brilliant! Bravo. Miss Ann!

    Amazing. . .

I loved your Beethoven Romance in F too. I'm tired of being an old biased Heifetz snob.

  • Thanks very much, Pjmnash! I have to admit, though - the blonde routine Does help with speeding tickets :-D...!

  • Very nice playing! Have you seen Rachel Barton Pine's video of this piece? :)

  • ViolinCyndee, I haven't, so now I'll have to look it up! :)

  • yeah i do listen to a lot of music, i really like the violin. I also like rock, pop, and some classical.

  • Kelley, I sort of gathered you did :). I like some classic rock, too, though I have to admit that I listen to mostly either classical or singer/songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot.

  • Jesus christ. I tried violin for about 2 years and never seen yankee doodle done so skillfully and quickly. Well done!

  • great job on those false harmonics! that looks incredibly difficult

  • all i can say is WOW, your amazing

  • you're amazing, when did u learn violin? i just know simple songs

  • Ashley, thank you so much. I began playing when I was just shy of 6, so I've been at it for 15 years. How long have you played? :)

  • thanks for the reply! I started playing like 1 year? not so good but i'm practicing, you're my idol now, you're amazing

  • You are too kind, Ashley. Practice is the key - just keep plugging away!

  • Love the Max Azria dress

  • Mcarthurwallace, It's actually a vintage from 1969. I know the style you're talking about, though - I saw it at Lord and Taylor, and when I DID, I just had to beg my mom let to let me borrow hers and save me $400, LOLOL....!

  • idk even no how to HOLD or play a violin at that lol

  • i bet you have to have some arm strength to hold that thing up and move you arm and fingers that fast NICE JOB

  • Ligon, I confess, my arm usually DOES feel the burn after I play it, LOL....I am very glad you liked it!

  • ya i no i couldnt do that lol props

  • It's like weight-lifting, LOL - just build up gradually and sure you can!! :-D

  • very nice, and original

    congratulations

  • Hello Ann.

I've really enjoyed all of your videos so far, and this one looks so much fun to play!

You have a great sense of humour and seem very down to earth. I look forward to your promised instructional videos.

    Keep posting!

  • Thanks, nellievic! I am very glad you enjoyed!! :)

  • A quick yersion, wonderfully done.

  • Thanks, doveharp! I love playing this one fast, I confess!

  • nice job, :) keep up the good work you rock!

  • Thanks, coldharbur!! As a classical violinist, I'm always happy to hear the word "rock" used in conjunction with my work! :-D

  • Thank you for the beautiful performance

  • And thank you for listening, Sierra!! :) :)

  • That made me smile all the way through. Great rendition.

  • Thanks, Mayfield...! It makes me laugh when I play it - especially in the harmonics section (where it sounds like whistling!!! :) :))

  • Fantastic playing. I loved the enthusiasm with which you began the "Yankee Doodle" section and ended the piece.

    Watching you play is delightful.

  • The joke of starting Yankee Doodle in such a bravara way is so funny. I love the moment when the theme surfaces out of all of the seriousness :)....

  • Brava Ann! A great job. I didn't think the piano was too loud at all. I like to hear the two instruments fighting for attention in a piece like this. That's called enthusiasm.

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it :)....and hey, I'm glad you saw a positive side to it!! :) :)

  • wow! had to make yankee doodle complicated too...:) nice!

  • Isn't Vieuxtemps insane?? He wrote this for his American tour...!

  • The piano is overbearing, and we lose much of the violin as a result.

  • I hear ya, Paul.....it's very hard to get my pianist to tone it down in this piece.....The funny thing is that even when I played this with Chris O'Riley on From the Top, according to my teacher, Erick Friedman, it was still too loud. I guess that must mean that the piano part is harder than it seems! Darn violinist/composers :-D...!

  • the piano wasnt too loud i heard the violin just fine...

  • Top quality performance. Henri Oldtime rocks. haha

  • Perhaps the first "classic" rocker :-D!!!

  • This is amazing !

  • you are beautiful! =)

  • Oh, the wonders of makeup!! :-D

  • As If!! Ann, you've got people all over the place *wipes some off the counter and tries not to step on some* who all say you're beautiful. Accept it! lol XD

  • You're very sweet :). I'll have to disillusion you by putting up old pictures of me, with my goggle glasses and braces!!! :-D

  • I accept your challenge! =D

  • Now I have to extract them from my mom, LOL....though the 14 year old video on my page is close. I just got my braces off a few months before...!

  • I promise not to scream =]

  • hehehehehehe...ok :)

  • BRILLIANT. BRAVO!!!

  • Come toujours .... splendide !

    Félicitations

  • Merci! :)

  • brilliant play. looks great in HD. great live video.

  • Nice playing Ann and a good piece. Thanks for posting it. Have to agree with teddharris about the piano being a bit loud though. Well done!

  • Thanks, Ian...! Yes, it is hard to get the piano toned down enough here. I nag constantly, but it doesn't seem to make a difference! :)

  • bravo.... exhilarating performance.

  • Very well done! Love your enthusiasm for the music. However, the piano overpowers the violin too much, so I couldn't hear you as well toward the end.

It is a fun piece. Both of you appeared to be really enjoying this.

  • Thanks, Tedd! It's a bit of a challenge to get the piano quiet enough in this one...:)

  • I love this!!!! Yankee doodle used to be my favorite song when I was a little boy. I used to love when my kindergarten teacher sing it with us. Thanks for sharing this with me.

  • It is my pleasure, cardonaedgardo.....Thank you for listening! :)

  • Yup this version is much better synced.

Love the vibrant feel! And sounds so homey! I can't believe this is by a Belgian!

  • The poor guy wasn't happy that the American's liked Yankee Doodle so much, LOL! He had remarked that he should have never written it, because whenever he toured in the US, all anyone would ever ask him for was Yankee Doodle! :)

  • love the eye look at the beginning. can really tell that your enjoying playing this piece!

  • It's just so funny!! I can't help but be amused as I do it. Here we have this big bravura entrance - tapering off in to a Yankee Doodle! :)

  • Haha excellent performance!!! I love Itzhak Perlman's playing too:D

  • Perlman is awesome! :) I may sound silly, but I think my favorite that he plays is Schindler's List... :)

  • Mine, too. That and Melancholique. Both bring tears.

  • Ann that looks like so much fun! I wish I could do that, lol. Was that a lot of pizzicato at 1:40-1:46? Sounded cool. Got that part stuck in my head, lol. (well I'd stick more in there, but I already have both your terrantelles and your zapateado in there, lol. I'm running out of room)

My favorite part, tho, was that huge beaming smile you finished with! xD

  • Yep, it is - it is alternating left hand pizz with bowed open Es. It was pretty hard to coordinate! :) Glad you're liking it, though!

  • lol, you're probably getting tired of me saying nothing but good about your videos. Say, I got an idea. Why don't you MESS UP, just once.... see how that goes, lol. xD

  • Oh, violinists never tire of compliments, LOL. We're as bad as singers in that respect :-D.....

  • Yeah I bet you can do that, too! lol xD

  • wow amaznig feel
