  • damn you portnoy...i hate having to drum to you with only three toms and two cymbals hahah but god damit you are god..except better. it only took him thirteen minutes to create the world (it's how long the song is in case you didn't get that one lol)

  • METAL IS TALENT....PROG ROCK IS ALOT OF TALENT....JAZZ IS TALENT....CLASSICAL IS TALENT....BLUES IS TALENT....LATIN IS TALENT.... POP IS CRAP, PUNK IS CRAP, RAP IS CRAP, COUNTRY IS ANNOYING AS HELL, AND MIKE PORTNOY OWNS ALMOST ALL DRUMMERS ON OUR PLANET. But I cant imagine him jamming black metal like Nick Barker,lol....

  • 1:20 - 1:43 BEST!!!!

  • I have to admit that I don't like the previous albums of DT, I just like some songs. But this album (and specially this song) made clear to me that they are amazing progressive songwriters. It's the first DT record that I like as a whole. I really hope that next albums are as great as this.

I love epics, and "In the Presence of Enemies" is one of the most exhilarating epics I've ever heard.

By the way, Portnoy is one amazing metal drummer.

  • He isn't metal drummer, you fucking dick! He's Progressive rock drummer! Don't you dare say that again.

  • Dream Theater is considered a Progressive METAL Band. Let the Progressive ROCK genre for bands back in the 60's and 70's.

I just choose to say metal drummer, but "rock drummer", "progressive drummer" or just "drummer" fits Portnoy perfectly.

Don't get so mad, "stupid drummer". Shove a drum stick up your ass and calm the fuck down.

  • "Shove a drum stick up your ass and calm the fuck down"? Say it to your mather while lunch, you fucking dick.

PS I'm progressive drummer, and your father calls you just drummer! ahhh... fuck you!

    You fucking dick

    AAAGRH!!!

  • Geez, you really have issues. What's the fucking problem of saying just drummer to indicate that someone plays the fucking drums? Progressive, rock, metal or any other genre is just a detail.

What the fuck, you're sick. Kill yourself and write some fucking dramatic letter, you fucking EMO. Or should I say post-modern-progressive-EMO, you bastard?

  • wo u fucking idiot don't bash on emos have they done anything to u u fucking idiot

  • Oh, my god. Now there are two whining little girls to deal with.

  • dude but why would u bash on emos im just wonderin

  • Because the great ChaosDrummer is so fucking dramatic and a prick, just like all the EMOs who misunderstand emotion with need of attention.

  • Do you have something against metal?

  • There is a diffrence betwen metal drummer and Progressive rock drummer, so that's why i'm pissed of on this fucking dick who said that.

Sure i don't have anything to the metal. I like metal. And if i had something what would you do, you fucking dick?

  • I'm a dick for asking you a question? You have some serious issues that you need to work out.

  • You bring shame upon the metal genre... Shame on you!

  • oh really? So i'm proud of it!

  • My soul is my own now...! I'll do not fight for you! You fucking dick!

  • The interlude to this song is jaw-droppingly awesome (just like all of it :P)

  • 7:05 - ending i scary! xD

  • Did you piss your pants?

  • like you? no!

  • 3:37-3:58

    gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

    how how??

  • When I try to play that on my 5 piece it sounds like crap!

  • I had the chance to see dream theater in bejing china, and the thing that amazed me most about the show is when mike was singing and playing the hell out of his drums, such skill

  • realmente un pulpo!!!!!

  • I'm fucking in love with this ending absolutely phenomenal.

  • 2:36-2:40 holy shit that was amazing ugh Mike Portnoy, what a god

  • i think the video is 2 mili seconds before de sound

  • this song is kinda confusing at the end. has he lost faith to satan or god?

  • It is exceptionally brief. I mean, they go on and on about the gathering, the ritual, and then he just wakes up out of the struggle of it all? It sounds like it might go into another cd. in the presence of enemies part 3? *crosses fingers

  • it would be kinda strange to call God the dark master, so I would say, none of them

  • "According to Petrucci the characters and happenings are merely metaphors, and the song is in reality about the turbulence inside the main character, struggling with his darker side."

To you morons who think this is a christian song.Stolen from wikipedia

  • exactly what i was thinking! i just came a little too!

  • lol they play progressive metal havnt u listened to all the others albums or just this song and i walk beside you=? XDD

  • Progressive Metal is a style of music, Christian band is a generic term describing lyrical content.

  • i this song has convinced me they're a christian band.

  • Hm... :)

  • With a huge concept album about reincarnation instead of heaven/hell. lol I love that

  • They're not, man. trust me.

  • Yeah, I was convinced at The Glass Prison, and I walk beside you,

  • Are you totally stupid? The Glass Prison is about alcoholism.

  • And overcoming it. Listent to the last lyrical section.

  • Yes,but it doesnt have anything with christianity to do.

  • i also think that surrounded off of images and words is very christian sounding

  • Hes The God.

  • mike nuber oneee:)i love youuuuu

  • I love Part 2 of In The Presence of Enemies. It's heavier, and more powerful. Like a well aimed kick in the shins, except replace the pain with musical bliss.

  • That freakin legacy crash is so unbelievably perfect!!!...Like a china crash!!!

  • you mean the one above his maxstax? cuz if so thats the 19" jojo mayer signature fierce crash not a legacy crash

  • i would trade my whole set for that china stack on the right there

  • gavin harrison from PT is pretty ace too =]

  • you suck baby...buddy rich is one of the greatest drumers of all TIME

  • Unfortunately, as good as MP is, Buddy Rich is still better...I doubt anyone will ever come close

  • well... you can't really compare Buddy Rich to mike portnoy.... there so different in so many ways

  • fill at 3:45 o_O

  • what the hell are you comparing buddy rich to Portnoy for? 2 completely different Genres. No one can dispute Buddy Rich's greatness but it's impossible to compare the too; There's just no basis. Pornoy is my favorite but I certainly won't say he's the most technically proficient. There are many guys who are better technically: Tony Royster, Jr., Billy Cobham, Thomas Lang, Dave Weckl, and the list goes on. But he is definitely one of the greatest all-time prog-rock drummers. No question.

  • part two of this epic is in my opinion way better than part one only because of well more lyrics but also this part feels so much more powerful musiclly.... DT ROX!!

  • i gotta agree. I love In The Presense of Enemies Part2. If's one of my favorite songs from the album. SO damn epic and dark...but uplifting cause he finally says "My soul is my own now!!!!" so kick ass

  • im totaly out of my mind!

    i wish he live forever....

  • 1:30 = fucking sweet. I love it when he's working the hats and splashes...sooo sick

  • ok. i'm huge fan of DT & portnoy. but for all of those who think he's the best drummer ever, two words....buddy....rich.

  • in my eyes he is the best drummer ever ;)

  • that's cool if you think that, but even portnoy himself would disagree.

  • yeh maby but i mean he is the best drummer and you cant change my mind..

  • I think in terms of technicality Rich was the best and probably will be forever. However, Portnoy kills Rich in terms of coming up with unique and complex drum parts. You can't deny that. He plays stuff Rich probably couldn't dream of coming up with

  • what the hell are you comparing buddy rich to Portnoy for? 2 completely different Genres. No one can dispute Buddy Rich's greatness but it's impossible to compare the too; There's just no basis. • The Slaughter of The Damned is the craziest thing I've ever heard by Dream Theater :)

  • I mean, The Reckoning :)

  • the ending rocks!

  • omg! WHO COULD NOT LOVE THIS!

  • i have those same shorts

  • holy shi..... what a song so awesome.. mike portnoy best drummer ever gonna see him 4/3 in luna park buenos aires YEA DUDE METALLLL

  • who iz not the best ????!!!! Mike Portnoyyyyyyy...You are right Dave they 're Really Crazy ...!! wtf MP IZ FAR AND FAR AND FAR SO REALLLY FAR FROM ALL THE DRUMMERS ON EARTH...! don't know If there are Extraterrester on the univers for play like MIKE...YOU ARE THE BEST PORTNOYYYYYYYYY !!:-)

  • Here Is the Video who iz not syncro ...but not Portnoy :p

  • I don't know how too many people said He's not the BEST. They're CRAZY!!!!

  • does anybody notice that it is a little bit out of sync??

  • i notice it everytime i´m watching a video on youtube, too bad about that!

    one of my favourite songs!!!

  • yeah these are the only videos I've seen where the audio is behind.

  • yeah. me too. too bad.

  • if only i was sponsored and could get my hands on all that gear.........

  • FORGET mIKE!

I want the table behind him!

  • hahaha :D nah the tabel with him

  • or just mike :)! haha

  • excellent song and instrumentals, i mean, of all the albums that ive herd in the past years i think this one and specially this song is the neareast of perfection

  • suw

  • what type of pattern it is at 2:04? im a drummer but i understand nothing to this...

  • It's instruments playing their sounds!:D Neehh.. juuuuust kidding,.. i struggled a while when i listened to this song with finding it out too... Still... I think to advanced to explain writing.. It's the 1 AND.. If you know what i mean..:P

1 AND 2 AND 3 AND...^^ Good Luck ma broh!

  • Allright... that came out a bit wrong...:P I meant that the pattern is to advanced to write..:P You gotta explain with words to give the impression...(=

  • Same as in Pt1. You have 4 bars. Each bar is a group of 6 + a different ending.

You do that twice, but the very last two bars have yet another extra 3-note group.

So the eight different endings look like this :

    [3 | 4 | 3 | 2+3 ]

    [3 | 4 | 3+3 | 2+3+3]

(remember there's a group of 6 before each of these. There you have it !)

  • Hyphen8nick...

I'm impressed! Now do an instructional video also! =)

  • I'll think about it ;o) For some reason that stuff is easy to me, I usually have to listen to it twice to get it all figured out. But as you could see it IS pretty simple, and quickly explained. The intro of the album though is tough, and one of the most interesting DT crazy stuff in that area(right after the unison, the D riff that John plays and the others seem to play way off him). I usually have no trouble figuring out that kinda stuff, but this one had me create an Excel file ;o)

  • The intro came out of a Rush song I believe. It sounded familiar @ first. Damn, you should play Dance Of Eternity if you want something really hard. =P

  • Mike Portnoy is the best!. I like In the presences of Enemies part 2, specilly for the drums bar!!!, really awesome and amazing!!!! EXCELLENT MIKE, EXCELLENT!!!

  • fast :O

  • now that i see, after 3 minutes i recognize it but... before the first 3 minutes... that stuff is not in the album o_o

  • Yes it is.

  • Where the hell does this come out????

It's not in the album is it?

  • Yup.

  • es un dios O_O sin duda el mejor

  • 3:39......amazing and unplayable....the best ever!

  • 1:20 1:44... damn insane

  • how does one even write drum music to this ...mike rulessss

  • i get some much pleasure out of watching and listening to this guy, epeically when we does his characteristic rolling though the toms really fast, sends a chill up my spine

  • just the best drummer and the best band ever...what can we say?

  • yes on mine its fine

  • the sounds coming after the moves...am i wrong..?

  • No, you aren't. It delays about a minute and a half in.

  • Mike portnoy...sublime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • KILLER!

It should have an Endless Sacrifice-ish ending, though.

    11/10 stars

  • Mike Portnoy is really a GOD.

  • WTF... Amazing

  • at last. A band that gives REAL MUSIC

  • increible el video este

  • I was stuck onto this song for about a good 3 months since the album came out....lol its just unbeliveable

  • Portnoy decides to go for galactic dominance at 3:51..

  • I know! Theese guys really know hot to play their instruments.

  • Dear lord they entire thing is amazing, but 3:29-3:57 is just jaw dropping.

  • fucking brilliant song, but did they really need that little ending after the climax.

  • I know man, when I heard the album for the first time, and the climax came at 13min I actually started clapping, thinking what a way to end an album, but then it dragged on for 3 more minutes with different riffs =/

  • dude this shit rocks! DT for fucking ever

  • canzone epica mike è mike

  • SO EPIC!

  • he's alright isnt he

  • :) A W E S O M E ..!!!
