damn you portnoy...i hate having to drum to you with only three toms and two cymbals hahah but god damit you are god..except better. it only took him thirteen minutes to create the world (it's how long the song is in case you didn't get that one lol)
METAL IS TALENT....PROG ROCK IS ALOT OF TALENT....JAZZ IS TALENT....CLASSICAL IS TALENT....BLUES IS TALENT....LATIN IS TALENT.... POP IS CRAP, PUNK IS CRAP, RAP IS CRAP, COUNTRY IS ANNOYING AS HELL, AND MIKE PORTNOY OWNS ALMOST ALL DRUMMERS ON OUR PLANET. But I cant imagine him jamming black metal like Nick Barker,lol....
I have to admit that I don't like the previous albums of DT, I just like some songs. But this album (and specially this song) made clear to me that they are amazing progressive songwriters. It's the first DT record that I like as a whole. I really hope that next albums are as great as this.
I love epics, and "In the Presence of Enemies" is one of the most exhilarating epics I've ever heard.
Geez, you really have issues. What's the fucking problem of saying just drummer to indicate that someone plays the fucking drums? Progressive, rock, metal or any other genre is just a detail.
What the fuck, you're sick. Kill yourself and write some fucking dramatic letter, you fucking EMO. Or should I say post-modern-progressive-EMO, you bastard?
I had the chance to see dream theater in bejing china, and the thing that amazed me most about the show is when mike was singing and playing the hell out of his drums, such skill
It is exceptionally brief. I mean, they go on and on about the gathering, the ritual, and then he just wakes up out of the struggle of it all? It sounds like it might go into another cd. in the presence of enemies part 3? *crosses fingers
"According to Petrucci the characters and happenings are merely metaphors, and the song is in reality about the turbulence inside the main character, struggling with his darker side."
To you morons who think this is a christian song.Stolen from wikipedia
I love Part 2 of In The Presence of Enemies. It's heavier, and more powerful. Like a well aimed kick in the shins, except replace the pain with musical bliss.
what the hell are you comparing buddy rich to Portnoy for? 2 completely different Genres. No one can dispute Buddy Rich's greatness but it's impossible to compare the too; There's just no basis. Pornoy is my favorite but I certainly won't say he's the most technically proficient. There are many guys who are better technically: Tony Royster, Jr., Billy Cobham, Thomas Lang, Dave Weckl, and the list goes on. But he is definitely one of the greatest all-time prog-rock drummers. No question.
part two of this epic is in my opinion way better than part one only because of well more lyrics but also this part feels so much more powerful musiclly.... DT ROX!!
i gotta agree. I love In The Presense of Enemies Part2. If's one of my favorite songs from the album. SO damn epic and dark...but uplifting cause he finally says "My soul is my own now!!!!" so kick ass
I think in terms of technicality Rich was the best and probably will be forever. However, Portnoy kills Rich in terms of coming up with unique and complex drum parts. You can't deny that. He plays stuff Rich probably couldn't dream of coming up with

excellent song and instrumentals, i mean, of all the albums that ive herd in the past years i think this one and specially this song is the neareast of perfection
It's instruments playing their sounds!:D Neehh.. juuuuust kidding,.. i struggled a while when i listened to this song with finding it out too... Still... I think to advanced to explain writing.. It's the 1 AND.. If you know what i mean..:P
Allright... that came out a bit wrong...:P I meant that the pattern is to advanced to write..:P You gotta explain with words to give the impression...(=
I'll think about it ;o) For some reason that stuff is easy to me, I usually have to listen to it twice to get it all figured out. But as you could see it IS pretty simple, and quickly explained. The intro of the album though is tough, and one of the most interesting DT crazy stuff in that area(right after the unison, the D riff that John plays and the others seem to play way off him). I usually have no trouble figuring out that kinda stuff, but this one had me create an Excel file ;o)
The intro came out of a Rush song I believe. It sounded familiar @ first. Damn, you should play Dance Of Eternity if you want something really hard. =P
Mike Portnoy is the best!. I like In the presences of Enemies part 2, specilly for the drums bar!!!, really awesome and amazing!!!! EXCELLENT MIKE, EXCELLENT!!!
i get some much pleasure out of watching and listening to this guy, epeically when we does his characteristic rolling though the toms really fast, sends a chill up my spine

By the way, Portnoy is one amazing metal drummer.

He isn't metal drummer, you fucking dick! He's Progressive rock drummer! Don't you dare say that again.
ChaosDrummer23 3 years ago
Dream Theater is considered a Progressive METAL Band. Let the Progressive ROCK genre for bands back in the 60's and 70's.
I just choose to say metal drummer, but "rock drummer", "progressive drummer" or just "drummer" fits Portnoy perfectly.
Don't get so mad, "stupid drummer". Shove a drum stick up your ass and calm the fuck down.
danamoroso 3 years ago
"Shove a drum stick up your ass and calm the fuck down"? Say it to your mather while lunch, you fucking dick.
PS I'm progressive drummer, and your father calls you just drummer! ahhh... fuck you!
You fucking dick

There is a diffrence betwen metal drummer and Progressive rock drummer, so that's why i'm pissed of on this fucking dick who said that.
Sure i don't have anything to the metal. I like metal. And if i had something what would you do, you fucking dick?

Same as in Pt1. You have 4 bars. Each bar is a group of 6 + a different ending.
You do that twice, but the very last two bars have yet another extra 3-note group.
So the eight different endings look like this :
[3 | 4 | 3 | 2+3 ]
[3 | 4 | 3+3 | 2+3+3]
(remember there's a group of 6 before each of these. There you have it !)
