I was just swooning over the similarities in vocal lines and harmonic progression.However, after a few more listens, I think you are right, it might be a bit of a stretch to say that this is a subconscious homage to Depeche Mode, though I am willing to bet DM had a hand in the gestation of Julian and Kim's musical talents. Still coincidence seems more likely...
