Ok, so one of these will process 3,000 gallons a day, and I'm thinking that at the estimated 210,000 - 800,000 gallons a day that the well has been leaking, this is futile. I am sure that there are areas along the Gulf that would benefit from thisdevice, and all the credit in the world goes to Kevin Costner for investing the time and money in this, but in the end what we need to do is move away from oil, period. Our way of life has screwed the Gulf region... it will never be the same again.

The problem hasn't been plugging the thing up like you would be able to plug anything else up normally. The problem has been dealing with how deep this thing is underwater, with the freezing conditions and other conditions that have been the big problem. They have to rely on robots and they haven't been all that effective because they have to deal with the same conditions. I hope to god something does work because we are ALL' (world) in serious trouble if it doesn't.
BP doesn't give a rat's ass about a solution! They want the oil regardless of how long it takes to clean it up! They don't want to stop the leak permanently if it mean they can't get the oil. Let's get real. The demo uses refined 'clean' diesel and water, and centrifuging requires seperate layers with different specific gravities. The stuff in the gulf is a thick crude-oil emulsion, almost like a kind of brown "mayonnaise". This gunk is oil that has binded to water and it would clog this machine up. You need a de-emulsifier to break it down. Even if it worked, there is so much oil blowing out into the Gulf that thousands of these machines going 24/7 won't even put a dent in it.
@alwayzsic Yes, it's worth a try and I'm not knocking any such effort. For a limited finite spill from a tanker say, where you are trying to clean up a section of coast or isolated lagoons, it could be great. But it will won't have any real impact on something of this magnitude. The US government and the oil companies had years to develop a plan and the technology for an event like this, and there is no technology that can fix the leak either at this depth. It's a really terrible situation.

I work in a different field. Good for Costner though for trying where they failed. But just because they say they can clean up 97% of the oil does'nt mean they actually can in reality--they are still selling a product. No matter how much they could clean up, millions of gallons more are being pumped back in each day.

I wish I did know how to fix it. But you have to be realistic about what has a good chance of plugging the leak and what can't work based on the science you know--its not about being negative. But I am afraid it is BP who are in charge of everything. and they decide what happens and what ideas/inventions get tried.

@user6008 You can't just throw them out there to see what happens. You must first follow regulation by going through the necessary process. Process takes time. Months,..years,..whatever. After that you need to get government license and approvals. These machines could be very loud, so we need to protect nearby swimming dolphins from being disturbed by the sounds coming from all these devices placed in the water. To do that you must test them in a government facility first. ...
....in order to get an accurate db reading. You then should test the water being emptied back into the ocean. Is it safe? Does the processed water contain any other contaminants from the process? Will any wildlife get sucked up into the machine and get "processed" along with the water? What are the future results from having these things process so much water and just emptying into the ocean? Not so fast . We need to regulate this before just putting it out there. Kostner sees dollars.

Our government and BP out to be welcoming all ideas to help with both plugging the leak and cleaning up the spill. It is amazing the inguienty of the American people. Kevin says these machines will process 200 gallons oil/water mix per minute. Ok, so one of these will process 3,000 gallons a day, and I'm thinking that at the estimated 210,000 - 800,000 gallons a day that the well has been leaking, this is futile. I am sure that there are areas along the Gulf that would benefit from thisdevice, and all the credit in the world goes to Kevin Costner for investing the time and money in this, but in the end what we need to do is move away from oil, period. Our way of life has screwed the Gulf region... it will never be the same again.

The problem hasn't been plugging the thing up like you would be able to plug anything else up normally. The problem has been dealing with how deep this thing is underwater, with the freezing conditions and other conditions that have been the big problem. They have to rely on robots and they haven't been all that effective because they have to deal with the same conditions. I hope to god something does work because we are ALL' (world) in serious trouble if it doesn't.

Let's get real. The demo uses refined 'clean' diesel and water, and centrifuging requires seperate layers with different specific gravities. The stuff in the gulf is a thick crude-oil emulsion, almost like a kind of brown "mayonnaise". This gunk is oil that has binded to water and it would clog this machine up. You need a de-emulsifier to break it down. Even if it worked, there is so much oil blowing out into the Gulf that thousands of these machines going 24/7 won't even put a dent in it.

@alwayzsic Yes, it's worth a try and I'm not knocking any such effort. For a limited finite spill from a tanker say, where you are trying to clean up a section of coast or isolated lagoons, it could be great. But it will won't have any real impact on something of this magnitude. The US government and the oil companies had years to develop a plan and the technology for an event like this, and there is no technology that can fix the leak either at this depth. It's a really terrible situation.

@alwayzsic It's not my job to invent anything--it's that of the oil industry who have massive profits and resources to invest, and the government. It was their responsibility. I work in a different field. Good for Costner though for trying where they failed. But just because they say they can clean up 97% of the oil does'nt mean they actually can in reality--they are still selling a product. No matter how much they could clean up, millions of gallons more are being pumped back in each day.

I wish I did know how to fix it. But you have to be realistic about what has a good chance of plugging the leak and what can't work based on the science you know--its not about being negative. But I am afraid it is BP who are in charge of everything. and they decide what happens and what ideas/inventions get tried.

an army of this can contain and save the sea fronts,and give time for the salvage team to plug the hole.In the meantime,according to sea salvage regulations,anyone who comes and salvages oil and own the oil. this has actually multiple advantages,and makes the containment initiative feasible technically and financially.
on top of that,the current machines are for small spills,and can be scaled up for barge sized operations.

After that you need to get government license and approvals. These machines could be very loud, so we need to protect nearby swimming dolphins from being disturbed by the sounds coming from all these devices placed in the water. To do that you must test them in a government facility first. ...

Will any wildlife get sucked up into the machine and get "processed" along with the water? What are the future results from having these things process so much water and just emptying into the ocean? A big thank you to Kevin Costner and his crew for helping out!!!! BP has ordered 30 of his machines! Kevin says that they can be put on skimmers to separate the oil from the water. Our government and BP out to be welcoming all ideas to help with both plugging the leak and cleaning up the spill. It is amazing the inguienty of the American people. Kevin says these machines will process 200 gallons oil/water mix per minute. BP has ordered 32 so far, but I agree with you, I think that they ought to be ordering a lot more from the looks of things so far.

it is an election year. where i am 5 out of 6 propositions on the ballot are backed by monopolistic corporations and are completely deceptive. if individuals dare object to the handling of this oil disaster (like the use of corexit) - expect another disaster ten times worse. (possibly nuclear)?-- definitely to be blamed on terrorism. to take one's attention from the oil disaster. and i mean before june. predictable no?

I wondering about the removal of chemicals themselves. But regardless I think they ought to try it. Don't listen to BP they're not doing anything right. NOTHING!! They've lied from the beginning, including their original name "Beyond Petroleum" that's what they called themselves. They only changed it to British Petroleum to fool the public.
