@JoshTheBassist Most films were overdubbed even in the sixties and seventies because sound was recorded on separate machines. Most of the sport reporters who filmed the races had "silent" cameras and were followed by a sound assistant only for the interviews. 100% Synchro sound came later with the video cameras.
Someone else mentioned the audio was dubbed. That's what I wonderied, since talkies weren't aound for another 20 years. It seems like actual audio though.
Beautiful shot of the front,,,showing the giant turning bar,,,,not a crank,,,at 3,33 Thats the factory Napier 100 HP 4cyl,,Bore 6.1/2" X Stroke 6" and 5 valves per cylender,,Alloy block and iron sleeves,,3 speed,, F,E,H,Johnson and Joe Knowles restored it in the early 1950s,,There were 3 cars built to this spec,,Larger square radiators were fitted later,,,Gearing was ALMOST 1:1,,,I can still hear the sound,,Ben
The Gordon Bennett was the premiere race of that early era, akin to an America's Cup of Motorsport, and the Grand Prix de l'A.C.F. of 1906 was its spiritual successor.
This documentary is the best historical record of motor racing available. Shell has even more archival footage that Mason did not utilize, but the cost of converting it to a modern format and making it available to the public far outweighs the apparent interest, and that is a shame.
While Bill Mason refers to the race as the "1902 Paris Vienna", Selwyn Edge actually won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Trophy. It was run in conjunction with the Paris Vienna and the participants were listed in the results of that trail, but the Gordon Bennett finished in Innsbruck that year.
Edge was well behind and had no hope of catching de Knyff, but close to the finish de Knyff's Panhard broke a driveshaft and Edge was the sole finisher of that first Gordon Bennett.
This is actully the "Shell history of Motor Racing" circa 1952. It's brilliantly done as most of the footage is silent and the added sound is so good that you'd hardly know it was added.
I will be posting the last series aand then a collection of footage that will take us from 1950 - 1965 after that someone else will have to take over. I will also be posting a collection of rare Brooklands footage
Are you going to post all the tapes? At the end of the last tape is some excellent footage of Herman Lang in the Mercedes W125 at the Nurburgring. Wonderful!!
Amazing footage, Thanks you musrum for the upload.

I wonder if a modern F1 car would even make it around a few laps of those circuits, or would the track be too rough?

Fantastic. We were shown some parts of it at Mayflower school, Billericay, in the early 1970's. Great to see it again.

I don't know whether he meant that by 2000 lbs or 1000 kg.
sevencube3 2 years ago
I would think 1,000 kg. Just since this is all happening in Europe. I believe the ton defined by 2,000 lbs. is an American thing.
