  • Adoro esta banda, minha favorita!!! brazil here!

  • Thanks for the discussion of the hidden meanings everybody. I came here because the song plays a role in the spy novel "The Tourist" and I got curious about it from that. I now suspect that the hidden meanings of the song are meant, by the author, to give us a very subtle insight into the psyche of the spy protagonist (who likes the song). It seems to fit.

  • tres tres bon cover ,

  • niCE VERSION ,MUY BUENA

  • doll of bran because they used to make dolls by fitting them with the cereal bran.

  • Hurricane 2007 they were great! :)

  • Theres's lots of better versions of this one out - so if you can't do it - better let it be!

  • doll of wax?

  • Belle and Sebastian l'a fait y'a 8ans...

France Gall 1965...

  • I can't bear back vocals!

  • WATCH CFR/NAU

Ian, d'Angleterre xxx

  • when i saw them at the hollywood bowl, i bought a 45 record with one side having this cover of the song, and the other has an LCD Soundsystem cover of "no love lost" from Joy Division (AMAZING COVER). five dollars well spent :)

  • very good :P

i love everything this band does

  • The girl from Belle and Sebastian had horrrrendous pronunciation... Even for a Scottish Anglophone it was pretty bad.

  • FUCK OFF BELLE & SEBASTIAN! Arcade Fire is much better...

  • hm meh, yeah, why not.

  • Ils devraient faire un album en français.

They should do a french album..

  • et pourquoi alors? Est-ce que la langue importe autant?

Why should they? What does the language matter?

  • i just told myself how great it'd be to hear a group do this today. and...arcade fire comes up on the search. another reason why these guys kick ass!

  • genius!

  • u can download this song on the blog bridging the atlantic.

  • anyone know if you can get this on mp3?

    its the best

  • There's a studio version on a split vinyl they did with LCD soundsytem, though there's a few live versions on the hype machine.

  • Formidable

  • beurk

  • ( LLLL )

  • AAAAAhhh! Thank you SOO much for this!

    It's a great cover... ^.^

  • Belle and Sebastian and the Arcade Fire, my two favorite bands, both cover this.

  • ZOMG

  • Thanks for posting it. If Anyone is interested here is the setlist for the Feb 7th show (where the video is taken from)

The Well & The Lighthouse, Windowsill, Laika, No Cars Go, Black Mirror, Poupée de Cire, Black Wave/Bad Vibrations, My Body Is a Cage, Power Out->,<-Rebellion (Lies), Intervention /Encore/ Keep The Car Running, Haiti, (Haiti snippet, band playing with the crowd), Neon Bible (live debut)

  • belle and sebastian also do a good cover of this

  • I wonder how much that neon bible cost them...

    its pretty nice.

why the hell are they covering serge gainsbourg? are they singing for other people?

  • This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. OMG!

    :D

  • Serge Gainsbourg wrote it, France Gall performed it.

  • Serge Gainsbourg wrote it for little stupid brainless France Gall who didn't have a clue what the song was all about!

  • you're mistaking with "Les sucettes".

  • Lol, stupid brainache, it was not this song, it was "Les Sucettes" ! It seems that YOU are that little stupid brainless who don't have a clue what both songs are all about!

  • He wroth both.

  • he wrote both sorry to confirm...

  • This song and les sucettes were both playing on her naivety, though this one is way more subtle. Though the song is about a "songdoll" it's kinda a dig at how teenagers look to their teen idols to tell them about emotions, but that they've never felt them themselves. It's also saying France was a doll that was controlled by the music industry, or Serge.

  • "son" in this case means "bran" and not "sound".

  • I doubt it, listen to the lyrics. (I'm a doll of wax, a doll of sound, my heart is engraved into my songs) It was Serge Gainsbourg who wrote it,who was pretty fond of his double meanings. Despite "poupee de son" normally meaning doll of bran or woodshavings (how the dolls were manufactured), for this song there is the obvious connotation of Doll of Sound, like those pull string dolls.

  • Damn, replied from account. Ach weel.

  • Then what do French call a doll with sound?

  • Gainsbourg was very keen with double meaning...son for sound and for wax, weren't the first records made of wax ?

  • Well, that's a double entendre

  • She didn't had any idea about the real meaning of both songs.

"Poupée de son" is a joke about young singers like France Gall who know nothing about life and certainly nothing about what they are really singing.

  • @cherleyyeah He wrote it she sang it

  • I think Gainsbourg later wrote Les Soucettes for France Gall, which is all about a girl enjoying sucking a "lollipop" and having its juice run down her throat! The story goes that when Gall found out what the song was really about she locked herself in her apt for two weeks!

  • Yeah, Sergy's a little pervert but we still love him !!

  • The lyrics of this song are about a a doll, a wax doll, that just repeats words i.e. Serge Gainsbourg's little swipe at manufactured pop, which evidently existed way before Stock Aiken and Waterman and Simon Cowell. The barb contained in the lyrics went over the judges head at the Eurovision and it won that year!

  • france galllllllllllllllllll

  • Serge Gainsbourg wrote it, France Gall performed it.

  • Serge Gainsbourg ou France Gall?

  • touche!

  • serge gainsbourg and arcade fire reunited....priceless!!
