I can tell, right before the eathquake occurs, some Giants fan, who is a doubter, say's "WHat the hell, we'll lose anyways. I don't care. I just like to watch baseball at the stadium. What could happen? An Earthquake?" [Earthquake occurs] "Holy **************************************. I should shut up more often." [Yes, yes you should]
All I can say is Al Michaels is a fuckin professional. He couldnt even hear himself after they lost audio during the earthquake and had the composure of a world champion. Thats worthy of an Emmy, I dont know if he won or not.
i read a book in 8th grade about a 2 girls looking for a dog named Laura and one of the girls name was Jenifer and the earthquake of Sanfransisco in 1989 was in that book
I love this video, its exactly what you'd expect from a satellite uplink that starts to shake, ABC must have had a telephone link for backup audio that stayed on.
@Jimbeanbob88 I PASSED THRU BAY STREET, GOT ON THE BAY BRIDGE, ONLY TO BE TURNED BACK BY THE CHP, AFTER A DAY THAT STARTED OUT IN WC, AT 8AM... AT `OPM....THA TO GET HO TO GO AROUND THE BAY
Al Michaels is a legend. The "Do you believe in miracles?" and the "I'll tell you what we're having an earth-". Two greatest calls in the history of sports.
All I remember of how ABC's final Major League game until 1994 ended was of Al Michaels saying that the loss of Major League Baseball would be "tough to accept," since "baseball had been such an early stepchild at ABC and had come such a long way." Gary Thorne responded to Michaels' comment by saying, "Great reviews just as ABC baseball ends."
Parker was out by so much his whole arm slid into the tag. He was out by SO much Uribe had time to tag his arm, go get some gatorade from the dugout then come back and finish the play.
My father worked concessions during this series at Candlestick park. He says that if there was no World Series, there would have been a lot more fatalities. Proof that God watches out for His people by bringing them all together for such a catastrophe.
Something very eerie about the way the audio splits at 4:35 and there's all this static and white noise. It almost looks like the intro to a trailer for a horror movie.
Yes, it was the legendary Jame Earl "Darth Vader" Jones. I couldn't think of anyone more better suited to handle this castasrophe than Al Michaels, having been himself raised locally here in Menlo Park, very well versed & knowledgeable on the Bay Area's geography.
I remember this day back in 1989. I was 8 years old and sitting on the couch watching tv. My dad was sitting in other couch behind me and i felt couch shaking. I thought it was my dad kicking couch with his foot. My mom peeks out from kitchen and asks "did you guys feel that?" We all got up right away knowing it was an earthquake and ran outside!!!
@Dubwilcox sure it is..United Nations passed a Weather Warfare Treaty in 1977? ... use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, ....
I can't get over the leisurely pace of the intro... all James Taylor-y and slo-mo. What a throwback compared to today's hyperactive graphics! You can't sell baseball on its slow pace these days.
omg this brings back so many memories, going to the Oakland collesium when i was a kid (i didnt go to candle stick much) but i was in this earth quake and i was only 8 at the time but i thought it was fun. RICKEY HENDERSON 4 PRESIDENT
How fitting that Peter Gabriel's hit song, "Big Time" is playing in the background, as Tim McCarver is breaking down the previous game's highlights as the earthquake is about to unfold.
Wow but the pre-show theme here sounded sad but fitting RIP all who died in Loma Prieta. Well at some point Hayward fault has to give us Bay Area people the final word on who really in charge of the bay.
WHY ARE CALIFORNIAN'S SO PROUD OF EARTHQUAKES, YOUR STATE IS GOING TO BREAK TILL YOU FALL IN THE CRACK WITH IT. PRIDE? NO IGNORANCE. IF LESS FATASS PEOPLE LIVED THERE IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM, GRAVITY ALWAYS WINS BITCH ASSES! YOU HAVE AN 80'S ACTOR FOR A GOVERNOR WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED A POP STAR POLICE SQUAD.
@ACEDIMEMUSTAINE better to be part of an earthquake than a flood or hurricane. as far as Ca breaking, uhh by the time Ca splits in two according to experts, we'll all be long dead buddy so no worries there.
Lived in Novato and remember this like yesterday, my father worked in Oakland and used the Cypress Structure to commute back and forth. He didn't work that day and would have been driving home from work when the quake hit. He lost couple of co-workers that worked with him. I remember taking a drive to look at the collapse couple days after the quake. We got out to look, I didn't understand how serious it was until I saw the destruction for myself. I could see my father was a little shook up but
My Daughter (she was born in 92)mother was on the lower deck of the Cypress every day at the hr. and time of the quake. we partied too much the night before and day of the quake so she didn't go. If she had she'd be gone and my daughter wouldn't be. Some times I trip if we were not the way we are she'd be dead and I wouldn't have the beautiful great kid I have today
This is how I remember the quake, because this is what I was watching. I remember wondering if a bomb went off or something. It was kinda erie. I don't know if another channel was covering it cause I swear they were showing the outside of the park and I was watching the stadium vibrate (no joke). At the time, (when it came back on the air) it didn't seem that serious.....it was.
I know for sure San Jose has a marsh north of the city near Highway 101 from redwood city to San jose but San Jose was not liquidfied like San Francisco and Oakland was since they were built on marshland.
@recto89 I always wondered why we never seen any clips of San Jose getting damaged in the 1989 Quake since San Jose is near the epicenter. I know Santa Cruz got damage and San Francisco and Oakland was damaged in the quake. Maybe they exist but I can't find it here from KGO-TV probably KNTV the ABC station from San Jose in 1989 might have it.
My wife and I were in the upper deck, about 10 rows from the top of Candlestick Park, when the quake hit. It was the longest 15 seconds of my life. I had programmed my VCR to tape the game so I could see the highlights when we got home. I have this footage, along with news footage from the ABC station in San Francisco after they were able to get back on the air.
the world series saved my dad's life in addition to many others. They left work early and drove on the Cypress Freeway to watch the Bay Bridge Series... which later collapsed.
Actually, the best part about this quake happening, may be the fact that it was 2 CA teams in the seires so pretty much everyone in the stands knew what to do and didn't panic. Just picture Yankee fans (or any other East Coast team)
i've only lived here 4 years and have felt a couple of minor shakes. pretty much everyone here knows the quake drill like in the s.e. we knew the tornado safety stuff.
@jen8933 The wonderful city of SF has always been a hot spot. A big area to watch in coming years is the central and southern MS Valley. it is cringe worthy to think of a Chile style quake it one of the most important agricultural parts of the US.
@MickeyMorandini1 If an 8.9 to 9.1 quake happened here in San Francisco we would be worse than Japan and Chile because our buildings here only thought about making it withstand a 6.9-7.9 quake. But look at the cable News people 2 weeks ago when a 5.7 quake hit Washington DC when I heard the Cable News Pundits speak they sounded like Loma Prieta sized quake happened in DC but when USGS and Caltech said 5.9 then I understood why people there reacted the way they did.
@MickeyMorandini1 Heck Lisa Stark of ABC News who worked at KGO-TV San Francisco during the Loma Prieta quake would understand the difference between an East Coast quake and West Coast quake since shes been through both of them. Look at Philippines, Japan and Indonesia 5.9 quakes happen nearly every week over there.
@baubret Hah, yeah just saw this with slight rumbles felt in NYC and people running out of their perfectly fine buildings and scurrying to get on the subway.
I bet the Dodgers fans would have been would have been crying running around creating major commotion. Just sayin. Niners fans just tend to have things under control.
@copyright1982 Yeah, because annual city wide shut down causing snow storms and hurricanes are so much better. 17 seconds of shaking and most of us just went on about our lives. I haven't felt anything close to that since. Give me earthquakes every 50+ years over a hurricane season or tornado season every year anytime.
I was a nine year old kid in Ogden,UT when this happened. My first world series was the one from the year before and this was my second one. I believe my parents had gone to a restaurant then came home right before the quake. I stayed up all night watching ABC reports in horror :) Then that same night KSL started talking about the wasatch front being quake prone which put me in even more fear :) Next day in class we had the TV on all day on KSL because they had earthquake drills and reports.
I was just north of Lumberton, North Carolina on I-95 headed to Florida listening to the 1989 World Series on WTAM 1100am out of Cleveland,OH at 8:04pm eastern time when the radio crackled out..then returned and they said there was a major Earthquake in San Francisco. I finally made the border of South Carolina and got a room so I could watch events unfold live on TV.People were gathered around the TV in the motel lobby in Dillon,SC.Quite a memorable event.
I know exactly where I was that day, Tuesday, October 17, 1989, 5:04pm pacfic time. I was watching the game recap like everyone then everything shook and I thought it would never stop. This still brings back vivid memories of the day in October and the following days and weeks to come in Northern Californial. Thanks for sharing!
Damn hella of my family was there since they worked at the park, they said that everyone hella started running & screaming, that shit must have been scary...
Damnnnn My dad was in his house during the quake in Downtown Sf...imagine if i was watching the game and like la la la la anddd 4:30 im like cool then 4:33 im like FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
There are only 2 things wrong with the World Series nowadays:
They never play day games

@baubret Hah, yeah just saw this with slight rumbles felt in NYC and people running out of their perfectly fine buildings and scurrying to get on the subway.

@baubret yea an earthquake just happened now lol, ppl thought it was a bomb in the city, 5.8 magnitude earthquake, i didn't feel shit -_-
TheGuitardude94 6 months ago
@baubret Also, everyone left work early to watch the game. Had it been typical rush hour, more lives would have been lost.

I bet the Dodgers fans would have been would have been crying running around creating major commotion. Just sayin. Niners fans just tend to have things under control.

@baubret well, considering what happened a couple of weeks ago, perhaps its not so far fetching

@baubret Well, we're also not stupid enough to live in a part of the country where you have to deal with that shit lol

MrDrunken1 5 months ago
@MrDrunken1 Earthquakes kill people; snow storms rarely do. As for hurricanes, I'm in Boston and we rarely get those here, either, so...
