One of Billy Bob Thornton's signature characters. I also like how Dwight Yoakam played the role of Doyle, or the antagonist in this movie. It was awesome seeing Billy Bob and Dwight go at it in a test of wills. RIP John Ritter.

Great movie, made me crave french fried potaters mmmmm. The part that was real funny is when John Ritter (funny haha guy) he is in the middle of the fight. And he keeps holding his mouth likes he's in shock and looks out the door window. That part was hilarious OMG!
@23Belligerent the 90's were the best in my opinion, but I was in my prime then so that might make the difference. The early 90's had the best music ever, and yes I agree some of the best movies came out then, too.
my boyfriend and daddy and brother used to walk around quoting the movie and i never knew what they were talking about until i saw the movie. it's actually a really great movie. i love it now.
@palmerutube Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle, Don't have a variety of crops on the same field, Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric, Don't cut your hair nor shave, If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be "cut off from their people", Psychics, wizards, and so on are to be stoned to death, People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God.........the bible says a lot of weird stupid things.
It was 1995's movie and I watch it after 15 years ago. I find this movie in a second hand shop and I bought it with low price. I love this movie such as everyone saw it.
Things were going so well for Carl. It sucks that he had to take Doyle out. There could have been another way to get rid of him, but I guess for movies sake it had to be this way. Carl wasn't the bad, dangerous one but he is the one in an institution. Sucks. Pretty good movie.
@AnthonyGF I own the soundtrack, dvd and blu-ray of this movie I love it so much. It is a touching movie and Doyle needed to die and I am glad Carl did it before anyone else was hurt.
@GhostOfACPast Because of my anger and compassion, my first instinct was also that Doyle should be killed. However, it is a strong statement to make to say that someone should die, lose their life, the one life they have. He definitely needed to be dealt with but it could have happened in a different way. I liked the movie, but a more realistic approach would have been to get a restraining order, stop dating him, put it out in the community that he was a bad guy and get him to back off first.
@AnthonyGF I volunteered at the womens shelter many years ago and I will tell you that restraining orders do not work in the real world. Most times the person will come back and hurt, or kill, the person who put it out on them. Stop dating him doesn't work due to the mental manipulation the person does to their SO (it really is a bad situation). As far as letting the community know how bad he was I seriously think they already knew it.
Carl should never have gone back to the instution, he only killed because he was protecting a child from being abused. He was forced to take some kind of action and if he did not both mother and child would have been killed.
Billy Bob and Dwight Yoakam were awesome in this movie. Dwight Yoakam's character was one of the most hated characters that I can remember in recent movies. They both should have won major awards for this movie.
absolutely not ....well i didn't anyway.....you have seen the preview so theres no reason to explain the plot...but the ending with orange kay playing sent shivers up my spine.....and what carl does is....mmmmm perfect
What is the name of the song at the beginning of this trailer?
It was not featured on the Sling Blade music track CD as well as another good song when Karl went to confront his father and pay his respects to his baby brother.
Why these two great songs never made it to the CD is a mystery.
Im fucking sorry. When he said the Lawnmower had no gas, I was rollin. I dont ever think I will see this movie, but If its anywhere near as funny as the Wicker Man remake, im in.
ALERT REDNECKS, message. All of you that abuse women and drink too much and can't hold your shit, who want to dominate and fuck with people, cause your too fuckn stupid to understand the GIFT. I swear by lava of the dragon your gonna get your head chopped by Karl. Abuse women, find out what happens!
This is a classic movie that I never get tired of watching! Superb acting and dialogue. Thorton was absolutely brilliant in this immensley entertaining movie. Carl just protected that little boy the only way he knew how! (I love the hammer scene-"I don't rightly know-I just woke up a holding it.") Great stuff!
I have always admired this film because it is so unlike most Hollywood movies. Billy Bob Thornton was a genius to slow certain scenes down to Carl's pace, not the audience's. I hate most sequels, but I wish there could be one for this movie.
