It's really hard to judge a pianist's performance of this piece. With most piano concertos, a pianist's interpretation can make or break the piece, but with this one, as long as you get the notes right, the music is just so well-written that interpretation doesn't add or detract much.
Shostakovitch is so much fun! The only thing I don't like about his writing is the piercing piccolo he likes to use at the biggest moments. It doesn't take much for that instrument to cut straight through the loudest orchestras.
Nice job with the piece. It's got to be frustrating to deal with an ensemble that can't seem to keep the tempo up. Everything ends up being quarter at 108 no matter how it's marked.
hey I'm learning this piece now... So much fun! Great job on the contrary motion octaves, they're a bit annoying lol
maybe in the part before that when the double octaves start take the pedal off more frequently? or at least use it to slur every two quavers. don't rit before the climax!!!!!! kudos for an otherwise fantastic performance, you have impeccable technique
Yeah! great job! i like your articulation. hey, at least you got to play with an orchestra. i played it with my piano teacher doing the accompaniment. not the same at all. congratulations, it sounds great!
Thank you for the comments! It was a blast to perform, though I wish the orchestra could have handled a slightly faster tempo. Check out Bronfman's recording with Salonen and the LA Phil - it is my absolute favorite (especially the 2nd movement *deep, happy sigh*).
For which movement would you like a slightly faster tempo? In this movement, I find that this tempo is already very exciting (if possibly a little too brisk), since it is imbued with much energy by the orchestra and yourself.
She is FANTASTIC - those audience members (and the one flautist) ought to be taken out behind the building and put out of their misery for not giving a standing ovation. I wish I could have heard that performance in person!
although your interpretation is not my fave, i have to commend you on this!
