Let me explain what a defensive swing is. You don't PLAN a defensive swing. here's an example of one-

Tiger sees water left. Cool. Doesn't bother him. Sometime during his swing, that water enters his mind and startles him, so he makes a subconcious manipulation and leaves the face wide open, sending it right away from the water. A defensive swing is INSTINCTUAL. NOT planned.

@ETrain12 Not to be incorrect/offensive like most the other people who replied to you, a defensive swing is when a golfer swings at a golf ball with the sole intent of "not doing something" be it hitting it into a bunker or water. While with most golfers, both pro and amateur this can be done, it usually results in an equally bad outcome. It's rare that you'll hear an announcer describe an "offensive swing" mainly because no one got to that level scared of failure.
