The song is her singing about how he was, and that she wished that she wouldnt have met him ever, since not having him is to tough to bare. The sarcastic part about the story is that her husband actually loved her more than anything else in life and treated her with utmost care and repsect

We should never forget that this song was made by an old composer here in Iceland, Jón Ásgeirsson. He used bits of two folkmelodies and paired them with magical love poetry, put chords around the whole thing in such a manner that nobody has tried to change it. Pure magic! No wonder we all love it.
