He dreamed of becoming king of games and offered something the Yu-Gi-Oh series didn't have and zexal fails with a lighter effect on the series characters different in their own way more competitive dueling than before and showing more emphasis on teamwork and heart of the cards and not just some badass dueler fighting in the darkness.
