This was a party to celebrate Sam Phillips' new house, in Memphis; he kid at 0:35 is his son. At 0.:38 (and beyond) next to the monkey is Dewey Phillips, first DJ to ever play an Elvis record on the air. And of course the girl sitting next to Elvis is Yvonne Lime. I'm guessing that the monkey is Sam Phillips himself, playing with Elvis.
@inkey2 I disagree that it is a joint. My opinion is based on the fact that Elvis didn't want to be seen smoking because he didn't want his fans to do it.I think that is very credible thing that he did :)
@mommastcb I do not think it would be unusual, even back then, for a cool young hipster like Elvis to smoke pot "socially" on ocassions (it's not like he was a pothead). Also, he is holding it and taking a hit off it the way you would smoke pot.......and who passes a tobacco cigarette around....not too common to do that. The cigarette looks thinner than a normal cig too. I mean, if Elvis tried pot for a short peroid in his life to me that would in no way diminish his character
@inkey2 You are so right. No one shares a cigar!Sorry about that.It doesn't matter to me though.I guess my thoughts about the 50's are not entirely right.
No, of course not nktrygg, This was an innocent gathering of family, friends, and costar and girlfriend Yvonne Lime. In Guralnick's "Last Train to Memphis"it is said that Elvis was so innocent when he first went to Hollywood not only did he not do any drugs, the people around him couldn't do any either! When they would bring girls up from the lobby to meet Elvis he had to get to know a girl by talking and watching TV before "making love to her early in the morning." Not completely innocent.
Great one this. I have seen it before cor part of it. Think it also might be in color. Whould have been great to hear what they are talking about. Thank you very much for this clip.
he frequented cigarillos, but never made a habit of cigarettes. Tried them? sure..who hasn't, but he never made a habit of it. Thats what he meant when he said he didnt smoke or drink. There was no habit. he tried pot, and lsd too y know.
I've seen this clip before, and I always wondered who his date was. He was dating several girls in 1957-58 that looked very much alike: Anita Wood, Dottie Harmony, and Yvonne Lime. Of course Anita is the one that lasted the longest, she lived at Graceland, and left when she overheard him trying to decide between herself and Priscilla. Elvis supposedly sometimes smoked cigarettes too, but they never became an addiction I don't think which is unusual.
thats not a cigar he rolled a blunt foo

@nktrygg yeah, that has to be a joint.....you just don't hold a tobacco cigarette that way and certainly do not offer a hit to someone
