Have you EVER read the Qur'an and found ANY references to female circumcision in it? That she was circumcised, was because of her Somali culture and not because of Islam.
Though I am not a Somalian and do not believe in female circumcision, there are Christians in my country who also traditionally practice female circumcision.
In Israel, in conservative Haredi communities, women are also segregated from men i.e. separate buses, must dress in a particular manner, etc and their role in the community is also restricted. Would you DARE condemn the whole of Judaism as being sexist?
In my country in Africa, Muslim women are judges, professors, architects, engineers, pilots, generals, big business entrepreneurs, captains of industry, hold federal ministerial positions, etc. So, the fact that Somalia is a restrictive and conservative society speaks more to their cultural and preferred interpretation of Islam than to the tenets of Islam itself.
St. Paul said that "women should keep silent in church". The Bible also said, "women be submissive to your husbands as unto the Lord". And several other such passages. Have various Christian societies not used strict interpretations of such passages to subjugate women in the past? There is nothing "muddy" about it.
