It's kind of hard to play by ear if you were taught, as most people play with their eyes, if you taught yourself, you play with your ears, and don't do as well with reading. Some are good at both, but usually you need to play by ear first...otherwise one relies on it. try and fiddle with your keys first though. then you might actually be able to do it in one listen.
