This video is honestly amazing. It broke my heart - in a good way, but nevertheless.

To be honest, in order to 'catch up', I read the early(ish) pages of Homestuck very quickly, and never paid attention. Dave never rubbed me the right way, and other than being epic with Rose, I didn't get why he was there.

Rereading his arc, I now realize - rather, fully remember - that he has one of the worst character arcs in the game.

ON AN SOMEWHAT UNRELATED TOPIC: Every game has a sort of Scratch or Glitch, I believe. The trolls in John's universe were supposed to be in Jane's session, from what I remember Doc Scratch saying. The trolls' ancestors/predecessors couldn't possibly win their game, so they CHOSE to release the scratch, thus dooming every game after.

I have a love/hate relationship with this video. You see, I love Regina Spektor. I love the art. I love how well the lyrics go with the images. I enjoy some of the melodies that this remix added to the original song.

But I hate the drop. I hate most drops in dubstep songs, but I hate this one especially. Drops do not belong in a Regina Spektor song. They don''t belong in a video that's supposed to evoke emotions.

I want to love this video unconditionally, but that drop infuriates me.

I'm glad people make things like this. As much as the "his brother won't let him try" bit is perfect for Dave, my favorite part is "You've spent half of your life / trying to fall behind." It reminds me of Dave just wanting to be "the dave of guy" - not because he doesn't WANT to be a hero, but because he doesn't feel like he deserves it. He doesn't want the responsibility because he knows he'll only fail no matter how hard he tries, he'll never be as good as Bro or John. ;__; Favorite kid.

Third, as a nitpick to get SOME negativity out of this happy-fest, I think it might have been a bit to better dissolve to and from black in the first -eet section rather than the clean cut. But that's all.

Now that his bro is dead, and after seeing all his other selves dead, he feels that it's his duty to die, as a sacrifice to protect the other kids. In his mind, they're simply worth more than he is. The brother in the line could mean either Bro, in the vague way of always trying to protect and train Dave, or Rose, who very specifically tried to save Dave by putting him to sleep as Derse's moon drifted towards the Green Sun.
