  • You must bruise or break the root to get the strong smell of the carrot, im sorry i shoulda said that in my last message, but remember the stem is hairy on Queen anns lace while smooth on poison hemlock. The latter being the most promising if you dont have a good nose on ya lol. But as you already know once you learn these two plants its almost impossible to get them confused.

  • It can be identified by the carrot smell of the root when young, before other features are recognizable. Also the stem of wild carrot is hairy while the stem of p hemlock is smooth. another poisonous look alike can be fools parley which also has a really bad odor,

  • @ironmonger1969 I don't notice the strong carrot smell, it smells like dirt to me. Smell is generally not considered a good indicator of correct identification as many people's sense of smell is degraded, and it can easily be influenced by pre-conceived notions. I've tested this on several folks with mushrooms and their sense of smell is easily influenced by the power of suggestion, it's a fun test to try.
